Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday said former President Donald Trump could pay for his presidential campaign's economic proposals by rolling back corporate regulation and expanding tax cuts to stimulate growth. "If you get Republican leadership in the White House, the Senate and the House, unified government, we will put this thing on turbo. Trump has proposed making his 2017 tax cuts permanent and further lowering the corporate tax rate, as well as wholly eliminating federal income taxes on worker tips, overtime pay and Social Security benefits. That figure did not include Trump's Sept. 12 proposal to exempt overtime pay from federal income taxes. A tax exemption for all hours worked over 40 hours per week would cost an estimated $1.3 trillion over 10 years.

The U.S. Navy's first coed submarine has been commissioned and is ready for service in the fleet, the Navy announced on Saturday. "The Navy’s latest Virginia-class submarine joins the fleet." Currently there are in excess of 60,000 enlisted women serving in the U.S. Navy, according to Women in the Navy.com. The submarine was commissioned during a Saturday morning ceremony at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Middletown Township, New Jersey, according to the Department of Defense. "The future of Naval warfare starts here, and it's more inclusive, stronger and more capable than ever," the Navy video said.

Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who died after allegedly being doused in petrol and set alight by her former partner, was due to be buried on Saturday with full military honors. Three weeks later her former boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly attacked Cheptegei as she returned from church with her two daughters and younger sister in the village of Kinyoro, Kenya police and her family said. “I don’t think I am going to make it,” she told her father while being treated in hospital, he said. Born in eastern Uganda in 1991, she met Marangach during a training visit to Kenya, later moving to the country to pursue her dream of becoming an elite runner. Marangach died a few days after Cheptegei, from burns allegedly sustained during the attack, dividing opinion among the local running community.

Bukwo, Uganda AP —Thousands of mourners in Uganda paid respects to Rebecca Cheptegei, the Olympic athlete who died last week in Kenya after her partner set her on fire, at a military funeral in a remote town near the Kenyan border. Military officers played a prominent role in the funeral because Cheptegei held the rank of sergeant in Uganda’s army, said military spokesman Brig. According to a report filed by the local chief, they quarreled over a piece of land the athlete bought in Kenya. Cheptegei is the fourth female athlete to have been killed by her partner in Kenya in a worrying pattern of gender-based violence in recent years. Cheptegei competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics, finishing in 44th place, less than a month before the attack.

An Alaska Airlines plane was forced to abort takeoff at Nashville International Airport in Tennessee after a Southwest Airlines flight was cleared to cross from the same runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines Flight 369 was headed to Seattle on Thursday morning and had received clearance to take off from air traffic control, the airline said in a statement, when Southwest Airlines Flight 2029 was cleared to cross the end of the same runway, the FAA said. The Alaska pilots had to brake so hard and fast that the tires on their plane blew out, the airline said. Damaged tires on the Alaska Airlines jet at the Nashville, Tenn., airport after takeoff was aborted Thursday. It said it sent another plane to Nashville to take them to Seattle on Thursday night.
