Eligible federal appointees can defer capital gains taxes indefinitely when they sell stock or other assets in order to avoid a conflict of interest. As a top earner in New York, they would normally have to pay more than $3 million in capital gains taxes. The sum that would have been spent on capital gains taxes is now free to compound and grow. The IRS allows investors to defer capital gains taxes in other scenarios that are deemed outside their control.

If you still haven’t booked your holiday travel plans, take note: Prices tend to rise the closer you get to the days you’re looking to travel. To afford holiday trips, about 50% of respondents are cutting back on other expenses while 49% are picking up discounts and deals, according to the 2024 Holiday Travel Outlook by Hopper, a travel site. Some last-minute holiday travelers are leaning into so-called “Travel Tuesday” — or the Tuesday after Cyber Monday and Black Friday — which falls on Dec. 3 this year. As you shop, make sure to read the fine print in case discounts only apply for certain routes and days, Dengler explained. “I really encourage travelers to do that exploration now so that on Travel Deal Tuesday, they can be ready to actually book,” she said.

Extraordinary circumstances have degraded 40% of global land iStockCertain places around the world are already experiencing this at an accelerated rate. Tesla, the world’s largest maker of EVs, is the only automaker making a profit on its US EV sales. So if the EV tax credit goes away, the price of all EVs might come down. ‘It will only help Tesla’Musk signaled during the campaign that he would support ending the EV tax credit, even if raised the cost of Tesla purchases for American buyers. But the rest of the auto industry wants to keep the tax credit in place. He said that Tesla’s pricing and scale in the EV space “is an apples to oranges when compared to the rest of the auto industry once the EV tax credit disappears.”

WASHINGTON — Over the last two years, a narrow Republican House majority has fought bitterly over everything from electing a speaker, keeping the government functioning and even passing symbolic messaging bills. Now, Republicans have clinched at least 218 seats to win a House majority, NBC News projects, but it’ll be another small one. “The House has always been a chaotic place, will always be a chaotic place. And here in the Senate, obviously, we continue to have a number of tools to exercise.”There is precedent for a narrow House majority delivering major legislation. ‘Trump is so volatile’Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., a former House majority leader, told NBC News that nobody knows what to expect from the new GOP trifecta.

Shares of Tesla are set to soar under a second Trump presidency, according to widely followed analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush. Ives reiterated his outperform rating and hiked his 12-month price target for the electric vehicle manufacturer to $400 from $300. A Trump win will further clear the federal regulatory spiderweb that Tesla has encountered over the past few years. A Trump win also means a more bearish outlook for the overall electric vehicle industry, since it is more likely that rebates and tax incentives will be pulled. TSLA YTD mountain TSLA YTD chart

Nine current and former people in engineering and sales said that Tesla's stock grants make it easier to accept lower base salaries. Tech billionaire Elon Musk and his business empire stand to reap massive rewards if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House. Elon Musk joins former US President Donald Trump during a campaign event in Butler, Pa., on Oct. 5, 2024. “I love Elon Musk,” Trump said at a rally in July. It’s not clear how Musk and Trump would navigate the ethical questions around a possible government role for the tech billionaire. “He would be in much less trouble in a Trump administration because Trump shares his hostility to regulation and regulators,” Richard Pierce, a law professor at George Washington University specializing in government regulation, told NBC News in an interview earlier this year.

New York CNN —More than 30,000 Boeing workers will vote again Monday on whether or not to end a crippling seven-week strike. The deal is not significantly different from an offer rejected by nearly two-thirds of membership just over a week ago. And it happened 10 years ago at Boeing, when about two-thirds of members rejected an offer that ended the pension plan. Despite its many problems, Boeing is a major force in America economy, and it is the largest American exporter. Ending the strike is important for Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who started in the job just five weeks before the strike began.

Currently, more than 80% of India's energy needs are met by coal, oil and solid biomass, according to the International Energy Agency. On the demand side, the Indian government has aggressively pushed policies that favor vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), a derivative of liquified natural gas (LNG). Meanwhile, the number of households that could receive piped natural gas is more than 300 million. For instance, natural gas is a crucial ingredient for making fertilizers, and manufacturing it domestically helps increase food security. Seth is also optimistic about India's growth rate for its third and fourth quarters despite slower capital expenditure in some states.

For example, according to a recent McKinsey study, Black Americans are 10% more likely to be working jobs slated for AI automation. If current trends hold, the new wealth created by GenAI alone will increase the racial wealth gap by $43 billion annually, according to McKinsey. That begins with infrastructure that supports AI enablement for all, including education on AI tools, access to the internet and power to compute. SFI has been working hard to close the digital divide in Black communities, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), 82% of which reside in broadband deserts. This work is bridging access gaps and ensuring that underrepresented talent thrives in the rapidly growing and in-demand field of AI.

CNN —Commonwealth leaders, ending a week-long summit in Samoa, said on Saturday the time had come for a discussion on whether Britain should commit to reparations for its role in the transatlantic slave trade. The statement also made reference to “blackbirding”, a term for people from places including the Pacific Islands being deceived, coerced or kidnapped to work on plantations in Australia and elsewhere. Those opposed to reparations say countries should not be held responsible for historical wrongs, while those in support say the legacy of slavery has led to vast and persistent racial inequality. The joint statement did not mention what form reparations should take. Stefan Rousseau/Pool/ReutersStarmer told a press conference the joint statement did two things: “It notes calls for discussion and it agrees that this is the time for a conversation.

While many AI companies have focused on training large language models, Groq seeks to make them run as fast as possible using chips it developed called LPUs, or language processing units. The gambit is that as AI models get better, inference — the part where the AI makes decisions or answers questions — will demand more computing power than training will, positioning Groq to reap the rewards. Groq's special (and tightly patented) sauce is its specialized chip design says Ross. Dean asked Ross's team to design a chip based on a specific type of integrated circuit they were using, and the result was Google's first tensor processing unit, a chip designed specifically for AI. Watching the AlphaGo program land a complex "shoulder hit" move on its opponent was validation for Ross that faster inference meant better, smarter AI.
