Twenty-eight years after Lyle and Erik Menendez were sentenced to life in prison for killing their parents, the brothers may be getting a second chance at freedom. Netflix also released a documentary titled “The Menendez Brothers” earlier this month. Some legal experts say the Hollywood projects, as well as a public shift in attitude toward victims of sexual abuse, helped bring renewed attention to the Menendez brothers, paving the way for their potential release from prison. “And people then took a look.”Lyle and Erik Menendez fatally shot their parents with shotguns in their Beverly Hills mansion in 1989. “They are kind, intelligent, and honest men.”Lyle Menendez is now 56, and Erik Menendez is 53.

Rosselló first publicly shared his account in “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed” in 2023, which prompted calls to reexamine the Menendez brothers’ sentences in light of their abuse claims. ‘That’s the man… that raped me’Rosselló recalled in “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed” that he was 13 years old when he met Jose Menendez. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said Thursday he will seek resentencing for Lyle and Erik Menendez in their parents' murders, paving the way for their potential release from prison after decades. Defense attorneys also provided evidence that one of the members of the Menudo boy band alleged he was sexually abused by José Menendez, Gascón said. Lyle and Erik Menendez alleged sexual abuse by their father at their first trial. Lyle Menendez is now 56, and Erik Menendez is 53. “Erik and Lyle Menendez’ motive was pure greed,” Cady wrote in the letter, which was sent Oct. 14.

CNN —The question for prosecutors reexamining the murder convictions of Lyle and Erik Menendez is not whether they killed their parents, but how culpable they really are. Here’s a look at the timeline of the case over the decades, from the initial shooting to the recent efforts to alter their sentence. July 1993: The Menendez brothers go on trial in a Los Angeles courtroom, each with a separate jury, in a trial televised on Court TV. September 2024: Netflix releases the crime drama “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a nine-episode series co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan about the killings. “We may be talking later, but that certainly has increased the attention by the public, and that’s why we’re being public about where we are.”A hearing on the Menendez brothers’ petition is set for November 29.

When the ground began to shake, rocking her bed to-and-fro like a raft in a current, Temilade Openiyi briefly wondered if she was dreaming. It was a bright April morning and she was still jet lagged from a flight — 12 hours from Lagos, Nigeria, to New York. And yet there she was, eyes wide open, bobbing along with everything else in the room. Tems, a faithful Christian, believes none of it has been in her control. When the earthquake subsided (magnitude 4.8), she said a prayer thanking God for granting her another day.

Poor irrigation practices, such as insufficient water application, using saline water, and not maintaining adequate drainage can also lead to salty soils. Irrigation can drive salinization, especially if farmers are watering their crops with salty water. In this case, that means watering crops with salt water in their lab. Globally, over 3,700 acres — just over four times the size of NYC's Central Park — of farmland grow SaliCrop seeds. Red Sea Farms, for example, is a Saudi Arabian company that uses selective breeding to grow crops that can be irrigated with salt water.

The surprising history of the barcode

The bull’s-eye barcode introduced in Woodland and Silver’s 1949 patent. Despite being the first barcode to be officially adopted by an industry, the multicolored design of the Kartrak symbol is now just a footnote in history. The seven barcode symbol finalists displayed in the official internal reports of the symbol selection committee. The bull’s-eye barcode, after all, was the original barcode symbol, and RCA was a powerful company that had invested significant resources in developing the technology. RCA’s main competitor was a latecomer to the battle for barcode dominance: the IBM symbol invented in the early 1970s by George Laurier.

CNN —American rapper Doja Cat has landed in hot water with listeners in the Philippines after naming her latest single after a Filipino street food. “I named the song ‘Balut’ because it signifies a bird that’s being eaten alive,” she wrote in an Instagram Story on Sunday. Balut is an 14-21-day-old fertilized duck egg dish, often served with rock salt as a seasoning. While Doja Cat’s explanation of the dish might not have gone down well, her Filipino fans might find her reaction to tasting the food itself somewhat more palatable. The song is among the tracks on Doja Cat’s fourth studio album “Scarlet” to be released on Friday, September 22.

Office landlord offers glimpse of what’s to come

NEW YORK, July 24 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Piedmont Office Realty Trust (PDM.N) is sifting through the rubble. The $910 million owner of high-quality office buildings in Boston, Dallas and beyond just borrowed at 9.25%, more than twice the interest rate it’s replacing. It’s an ominous sign for U.S. office landlords facing $60 billion of debt maturing at the end of 2023 and 2024, per data miner RCA. Office prices have fallen so much that cap rates are approaching 10%, according to Jonathan Litt, founder of activist hedge fund Land and Buildings Investment Management. Pricier debt means less income, but if rents have stabilized and interest rates keep rising, Piedmont was wise to start reconstructing its balance sheet sooner rather than later.

You don't get the best first-half Nasdaq rally in 40 years simply because the Federal Reserve did this, or the yield curve in the bond market did that. It was almost as if it was prosaic to seek profits, like, "How dare you defy the teachings of the yield curve, you foolish soon-to-be- broke apostate." It was the second move, the second week of March, that told the second tale of the first half: the fall of Silicon Valley Bank. Here we had an out-of-nowhere collapse of a well-known seemingly well-run bank that ran afoul, again, of the yield curve. Achieving that ideal was no simple task with orchestras of long traditions and routines, though Abbado remade the Philharmonic in his image, and lastingly so. Striving to fulfill that promise led him not only to embrace the energy of youth orchestras, but also to support and found ensembles of like mind: the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra Mozart. The most extravagant was the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, a coterie of colleagues and admirers with whom he gave critically sanctified summer performances from 2003 until just before his death. The breadth is extraordinary — what other conductor was as adept as Abbado in Rossini as well as in Webern and Ligeti? — yet it still excludes records he made for EMI, RCA and Sony, as well as most of his vaunted Mahler from Lucerne.

The fact that the world is now celebrating the arc of Mr. McCarthy’s monumental career is a testament to the novelist’s undeniable talent. But it’s also due to his timely recognition that, without his protector, Mr. Erskine, and the vanished world of publishing that Mr. Erskine represented, he would need to change the way his books were published. In the 1960s, large corporations began acquiring publishing houses, consolidating the industry into fewer and fewer conglomerates. Literary agents became essential intermediaries, as publishing houses no longer riffled through submissions to find emerging talents. A poorly typed manuscript like Mr. McCarthy’s debut would struggle to make it into, let alone be rescued from, a slush pile.

Investment volume in commercial real estate fell off a cliff last quarter. But with few transactions on which to peg market values, is the market truly down? Last week, Alfred Brooks, the head of JPMorgan's commercial real estate group, said he's seen distressed buyers already raising money to pick up the pieces, once prices get low enough. Indeed, commercial real estate values are down, by other measures. April was the first month since 2010 that prices of all types of commercial property fell on an annual basis, according to MSCI.

“But Here We Are” has a back-to-basics immediacy and intensity that was missing from the last few Foo Fighters albums. (As a companion piece, they also released a cheeky collection of Bee Gees covers.) The undercurrent holding all of “But Here We Are” together is not an idea so much as raw emotion. Grohl’s melodies are as soaring and anthemic as they’ve sounded in years; his vocals are freshly impassioned and heartfelt. The towering title track layers intricate guitar work atop skittering percussion before a chorus comes along and sweeps everything into a tidal wave of sound.

Beep! The barcode turns 50, who invented it?

The barcode, that rectangle of thick and thin parallel lines seen on seemingly every grocery product, package, prescription bottle and piece of luggage is turning 50 years old. There’s hardly any products now that don’t use a barcode for identification.”Who got there first? A replica of a package of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit Chewing Gum used in a Smithsonian museum exhibition. The Wall Street Journal, in a 2022 obituary of Collins, gives the nod of inventing the barcode to him. Years later, the Smithsonian had a replica of that Wrigley’s gum installed in a museum exhibition on the history of the barcode.
José Iturbi (foreground) with his sister and fellow musician, AmparoJosé Iturbi ’s name may spark some vague recognition in those of a certain age, though most likely as a cultural figure lauded by previous generations. Iturbi, who died at age 84 in 1980, was a celebrated Spanish pianist and conductor who migrated into Hollywood movies in the 1940s, when he simultaneously held a coveted recording contract with RCA that endured for 20 years, starting in the mid-1930s. But though beloved by many, he never quite entered the pantheon of musicians whose names still resound.
AR effects are on the rise on Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram, appearing across billions of videos. Artists, labels, and music marketers are finding new ways to promote tracks via these AR filters. "If you do come up with a cool AR filter, it's easier for the regular user to create a TikTok with than to create a dance." "Artists will hire AR creators to make effects for specific pieces of music," Chris Barbour, Meta's AR partnerships director, told Insider. As with any trend on social media, originality is important for helping an AR effect spread, Yoder said.
SZA’s Ruination Brought Her Everything

In the week leading up to the release of “SOS,” SZA suffered the fits and starts many artists experience before their projects premiere, though those bursts were sieved through her specific anxieties. SZA told me about “weird, negative” remarks people made to her as she was prepping “SOS” for release. When she speaks about album release dates, responses escalate quickly from ripple to tidal wave. In an interview last February, SZA said that her next album would be ready in time for summer. SZA and Punch traded surly tweets, and as it all went viral, a messy narrative was set: SZA and her label were at odds.
