Rashida Jones is paying tribute to an icon, culture shifter, genius and, most importantly, her late father, Quincy Jones. Quincy Jones, who worked with a slew of iconic singers like Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson, died Sunday at 91. Days after the legendary music producer’s death, his 48-year-old daughter penned an emotional and heartfelt message about life with her dad. “All accurate descriptions of my father but his music (and ALL of his work) was a channel for his love. Your love lives forever.”Quincy Jones and Rashida Jones’ mom, Peggy Lipton, were married from 1974 to 1990.

CNN —Quincy Jones was known to generations of fans due to a career that spanned from the radio to the big screen and the small. Jones was not shy about talking about his extraordinary life experiences in numerous interviews or the 2018 Netflix documentary, “Quincy,” co-written and co-directed by his daughter, Rashida Jones. “The first music played on the moon,” Jones told the New York Times in 1990. The actor has asked Jones to come see a rough cut of the film “Bullitt” and McQueen brought Sebring along. “He said, ‘Man, did you hear about Jay?’ Because we all used to hang out together,” Jones said.

Quincy Jones, a maestro of American music and a titan of the entertainment industry who influenced nearly every popular genre, produced landmark albums and earned a record 80 Grammy Award nominations, has died, his publicist said. Jones "passed away peacefully" Sunday night at his home in Bel Air while surrounded by his family, his publicist Arnold Robinson said. "Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him," his family said in a statement. In a prolific career that spanned more than 70 years, Jones established himself as a behind-the-scenes force and a gifted artist in his own right, working as an arranger, composer, songwriter and performer.

But there’s another, related aspect of that experience, and it’s all over “The Complete Quincy Jones.” In just about every photo, he seems so happy to be wherever he is. Then there’s the intriguing shot of him looking heavenward with Leonard Bernstein at, we’re told, the Sistine Chapel. I know, I know: Sir, these are pictures. Those are as much Jones’s songs as Jackson’s. I learned that the rhythmic squeak on Jones’s “Soul Bossa Nova” (now immortalized as the “Austin Powers” ditty) is the cuica.

Unlike what he has been accused of over the last eight months, what occurred between us was not sexual. It was professional — demonstrative of the way dynamic and domineering men moved in our heyday. In the fading smoke of the murders of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G., I was named editor in chief of a music magazine called Vibe. (“No Way Out” would go on to sell over seven million copies.) So I wanted Combs on the cover of Vibe’s December 1997/January 1998 double issue.

And then there's the resentment there too," Jones told InStyle. "But I think about it as, historically, people go into the family business more than they don't." Pulling your weight at workShould people be open about their family connections at work, then? "However, if you are involved in an objective recruitment process and keep talking about your family connections, it could be preserved that you are hoping for special treatment," she said. After all, family connections can only go so far.

In late 1984 the singer and activist Harry Belafonte was both impressed and perturbed by “Do They Know It’s Christmas?,” a British charity single featuring a cast of pop stars. The proceeds from the project went to Ethiopian famine relief. Belafonte complained to the music manager Ken Kragen, “We have white folks saving Black folks and we don’t have Black folks saving Black folks.”Such was the spur for the 1985 song “We Are the World.” The creative nucleus was Black: its writers, Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson; Stevie Wonder (who didn’t get a writing credit but, as relayed in the film, was invaluable to the whole creative process); and the producer-arranger Quincy Jones. How the project turned into a one-night-only superstar fest — “If a bomb lands on this place,” a droll Paul Simon quipped while surveying the room, “John Denver’s back on top” — is chronicled in “The Greatest Night in Pop,” directed by Bao Nguyen.

On Monday night, about 500 people gathered in the Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan for the fourth-annual gala for the Shed, the $475 million arts center that opened in 2019. It has since hosted a concert series by the director Steve McQueen and Quincy Jones and is currently staging Stephen Sondheim’s final musical, “Here We Are.”For the gala, the Shed’s colossal main hall was transformed into a carpeted room with tables spread among low, blobby couches. “I feel like I’m in NASA,” one guest said, adding that the venue felt big enough to accommodate a rocket launch. The evening honored M&T Bank, which has partnered with the center since it began, and the Santo Domingo family, who are longtime supporters. The crowd included the ballerina Misty Copeland, who is also a board member; the designer Wes Gordon; and the hip-hop duo the Dragon Sisters, who are part of the Shed’s Open Call program, which commissions projects from emerging artists in New York.

When Club Music Went Commercial, Remixes Kept It Real
  + stars: | 2023-09-12 | by ( Craig Seymour | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Remixes can free a song from the dictates of radio trends, marketability and the pop conventions of boy-meets-girl. It makes me think about what, on the surface, seems so irrational: a Black queer person risking alienation from the larger Black community to shape a distinct identity around the inexplicable wants of the heart. You just had to learn it for yourself.”There is another function of the remixes I cherish most: They instigate precious memories. The beat is the confession, which recognizes, changes, and conquers time.” Some remixes remind me of the 1980s and ’90s, when music forged in Black queer spaces began reaching the mainstream. Remixes were one way of preserving Black queer aesthetics amid economic incentives to make club music more commercial.
