The bugler’s call to assemble had sounded, wreaths had been laid, a choral society had sung and dignitaries had spoken, all on a blood-consecrated hill in the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. All to commemorate the 161st anniversary of the speech that came to epitomize what it meant to be presidential. On Nov. 19, 1863, on this very hill, President Abraham Lincoln unfolded his six-foot-four frame to stand and dedicate a national soldiers’ cemetery made necessary by the horrific Battle of Gettysburg just four months earlier. His 272 words became a civic prayer of unity and purpose for a nation riven by civil war: the Gettysburg Address. He, too, is bearded, but he grew up in the borough of Queens, not the woods of Kentucky, and he stands five-foot-nine, maybe.

Jordan Neely died from the “combined effects” of a number of a factors, not a chokehold, a forensic pathologist hired by Daniel Penny’s attorneys testified Thursday. Penny is charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the chokehold death of Neely on a New York City subway train in May 2023. Penny, 26, who was a passenger on the train, put Neely in a chokehold and took him to the ground. Chundru said he did not believe that Neely died of a chokehold or that Penny had applied consistent and sufficient pressure to render him unconscious. Chundru said he believed Neely died from “the combined effects of sickle cell crisis, the schizophrenia, the struggle and restraint and the synthetic marijuana” that was in his system.

An NYPD officer and another woman were shot in Queens by an armed robbery suspect who was believed to be responsible for multiple robberies within the span of just about an hour, according to police. As police searched for the suspect, officers were flagged down by a witness who pointed out a man on Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street. The witness told police the man had just robbed a smoke shop on Guy Brewer Boulevard, and fired a shot while doing so, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny. After being ordered to drop his weapon, the suspect fired once, hitting Officer Rich Wong in the thigh, Kenny said at a press conference from the hospital. Worthy, who had been arrested for seven crimes since 2001, was also wanted for three other robberies at gunpoint, according to police.

New York AP —The leader of a New York City church where pop star Sabrina Carpenter filmed provocative scenes for a music video was stripped of his duties Monday after church officials said an investigation revealed other instances of mismanagement. Released on October 31, 2023, the “Feather” music video revolves around men behaving badly toward Carpenter before meeting grisly deaths. Among them is an ongoing investigation into Gigantiello’s use of a church credit card for “substantial” personal expenses, he said. Meanwhile, the commotion set off by her music video hasn’t been lost on Carpenter. She made light of it during a concert at Madison Square Garden in late September, just days after Adams became the first New York City mayor indicted while in office.

Beadle, who amassed 246,000 Instagram followers and nearly 60,000 YouTube followers, had recently posted videos showing off the power of a BMW M240. A caption for the video read: “It’s just a bmw.”In a video posted this week on YouTube, what appears to be the same purple BMW is seen racing from multiple angles. In one nighttime video, a group of men is seen blocking traffic on a highway and slicking the roadway to prepare for the race. In these conversations with patients who are wary of religion, Callahan slips in another detail: He’s an atheist himself. Callahan is one of a growing number of openly atheist chaplains working in institutions around the country. Though the term “atheist chaplain” might sound like an oxymoron, he doesn’t see a contradiction between his beliefs and the work of tending to the human spirit. Other atheist chaplains don’t shy away from religion at all, instead helping people explore faith and spirituality in nontraditional ways. There may be few atheist and nonreligious chaplains right now, but as Callahan sees it, their numbers only stand to grow.

CNN —A 13-year-old girl is the latest person to lose her life in New York City while “subway surfing,” a dangerous challenge attracting young people on social media. “Subway surfing,” involves riding on top of a subway car while its moving. Six subway surfing fatalities and 181 related arrests have been recorded this year through October 27, the New York Police Department told CNN on Tuesday. The 13-year-old died while participating in a social media challenge, his mother told WPIX, adding he’d posted to social media prior videos of himself doing the stunt and she’d warned him not to ride on top of trains. TikTok previously cooperated with New York authorities to remove subway surfing content, the New York Times reported in January.

Its revenues and volumes, meanwhile, saw a 2.1% rise and 2.4% decline respectively, compared to analyst forecasts for a 3.4% increase and 0.4% decline. Subway sandwiches are short on meat, lawsuit claims
  + stars: | 2024-10-30 | by ( ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +1 min
NEW YORK — A new lawsuit accuses Subway of “grossly misleading” customers by advertising sandwiches that contain at least three times more meat than it delivers. According to a proposed class action filed Monday in federal court in Brooklyn, Subway ads for its Steak & Cheese sandwich show layers of meat piled high, reaching about as high as the surrounding hero bread. In reality, according to several photos in the complaint, the fast-food chain’s sandwiches are far more bread than filling. Her lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for New Yorkers who bought the sandwiches in the last three years, for Subway’s alleged violations of the state’s consumer protection laws. Subway previously defended for more than four years against a lawsuit claiming its “footlong” sandwiches were too short.

Much of Trump's closing message is focused on illegal immigration, one of the centerpieces of his campaign. The interview, which was widely hyped by Trump and his supporters, was a snapshot of his, at best, untraditional attempt at a campaign closing message and, at worst, his tendency to step on his own policy pushes. The discipline of the Harris campaign contrasts with that of Trump, whose late-cycle rallies have maintained the sort of rambling, unfocused structure he has long been known for. That dynamic can be seen even in his final speeches as Trump tries to close out his third presidential campaign. “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” Danielle Alvarez, a senior adviser, said in a statement shortly after the joke was made.
