ISLAMABAD — Two Chinese nationals were killed in an explosion near the international airport of the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Sunday night, the Chinese embassy in Pakistan said, in what it described as a "terrorist attack." The Chinese embassy said a convoy from the Port Qasim Electric Power Company was attacked near the airport. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said a Chinese national was also injured and that an investigation was underway. It has previously killed Chinese citizens working in the region and attacked Beijing’s consulate in Karachi. In March, a suicide bomber killed five Chinese engineers working on a hydropower project in northern Pakistan.

A day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh dramatically resigned and fled the country, the student groups that led the popular uprising against her proposed a notable name to help lead the interim government: Muhammad Yunus, a microfinance pioneer who received the Nobel Peace Prize. Mr. Yunus, one of Bangladesh’s best-known citizens, was among those Ms. Hasina considered a political threat for years, her critics say. Now, those who ousted her want Mr. Yunus, 84, to hold one of the most powerful positions in the new government. “We have decided that an interim government should be formed with Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the chief adviser,” Nahid Islam, one of the student leaders, said on Tuesday morning. The country’s powerful military and other political parties will also have a say.

Despite his title as Hamas’s political leader, Mr. Haniyeh is replaceable, said Joost Hiltermann, the Middle East and North Africa program director for the International Crisis Group. Men’s and women’s Olympic triathlon events were scheduled to take place as planned on Wednesday, organizers said, a day after the men’s individual race was postponed because of pollution in the Seine. The women’s individual race was set for 8 a.m., and the rescheduled men’s event for 10:45 a.m., the Olympics organizers said in a statement released before dawn on Wednesday. The threat of postponements has lingered over Olympics events in the Seine, the river that traverses Paris, and the organizers have backup dates for triathlons and marathon swim events. The men’s triathlon race was postponed on Tuesday after heavy rain over the weekend raised the level of dangerous bacteria in the river.

The wildfires burning in the northwestern United States and western Canada triggered air quality warnings across both countries on Wednesday, as smoke spread over a region thousands of people have fled from. Thousands of firefighters and emergency personnel have been deployed in the region. The growing blazes have raised fears of a repeat of last year, when record wildfires in Canada blanketed cities as far south as Florida with dangerous smoke and haze. There were 40 active wildfires, none of which were under control, in Oregon and Washington covering more than 870,000 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Many fires are exhibiting “extreme fire behavior,” the center said.

But that's not what it looked like on Thursday when Biden floundered in his debate performance against former President Donald Trump, political strategists told Business Insider. "It was a disaster for President Biden," Alex Zdan, GOP political strategist and former New Jersey Republican candidate for US Senate, told BI. Where the similarities endAnother Trump presidency would mean a vastly different America than if Biden won a second term. When BI reached out for comment, representatives for the Trump campaign declined to answer questions about similarities between Trump and Biden. To have a chance, Biden will need that constituency to ignore his poor debate performance and questions about his age.

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

Iraq and Iran sign deal to tighten border security

[1/3] Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani looks on as Iraq's National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji and Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Shamkhani sign the security agreement that includes coordination in protecting the common borders between the two countries, in Baghdad, Iraq, March 19, 2023. The joint security agreement includes coordination in "protecting the common borders between the two countries and consolidating cooperation in several security fields", a statement from the Iraqi prime minister's office said. Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Shamkhani signed the deal with Iraq's National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, in the presence of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani, the prime minister office said. "Under the signed security deal, Iraq pledges it would not allow armed groups to use its territory in the Iraqi Kurdish region to launch any border-crossing attacks on neighbour Iran," said an Iraqi security official who attended the signing. Iran has also accused Kurdish militants of working with its arch-enemy Israel and has often voices concern over the alleged presence of the Israeli spy agency Mossad in the autonomous Iraqi Kurdish region.
Turkey's push into Iraq risks deeper conflict

REUTERS/Amina IsmailSARARO, Iraq, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Looming over the deserted village of Sararo in northern Iraq, three Turkish military outposts break the skyline, part of an incursion that forced the residents to flee last year after days of shelling. Turkey's advances across the increasingly depopulated border of Iraqi Kurdistan attract little global attention compared to its incursions into Syria or the battle against Islamic State, but the escalation risks further destabilising a region where foreign powers have intervened with impunity, analysts say. EMPTY VILLAGESA Kurdish official, who declined to be named, also said Turkey now had about 80 outposts in Iraq. NEW TARGETSBeyond the humanitarian impact, Turkey's incursion risks widening the conflict by giving carte blanche to regional rival Iran to step up intelligence operations inside Iraq and take its own military action, Kurdish officials say. According to a Washington Institute report, attacks on Turkish military facilities in Iraq increased from an average of 1.5 strikes per month at the start of 2022 to seven in April.
A 13-year-old girl was the world's first patient to get a cell therapy called base editing in May. Base editing is a new gene-editing technology that could lead to cures for many diseases. Alyssa, 13, was the first-ever patient to receive a base-edited cell therapy after enrolling in a clinical trial in May. Base editing allows scientists to make ultraprecise changes to single letters of DNA in cells. Alyssa, a teenager in Leicester, England, received a base-edited cell therapy to treat her leukemia.
Startups, Investors Bet on Remote Work Future

Even as more employers signal an end to remote work, tech startups and their investors are betting that it is here to stay, offering a range of digital tools designed to support a permanent workforce outside of the office. “Investors are super-pumped on remote,” Mr. Salam said. “Remote work is a durable phenomenon,” said Ravi Gupta, a partner at Sequoia who led the firm’s investment in Remote. Mr. Riggs said Frameable currently has hundreds of commercial customers, who rent its software with rates varying by the number of users. “I may be a bit biased, but I absolutely believe remote work is here to stay,” said Remote’s Mr. van der Voort.
A decade ago, CAR T cell therapy changed the world of cancer treatment, offering a personalized approach to patients with blood cancers like leukemia. A novel approach to CAR T (chimeric antigen receptor T cell) therapy aims to cut down that turnaround time significantly. Instead of reprogramming each patient's cells, researchers are testing the safety of using universal, or "off the shelf," CAR T cells from other patients, preprogrammed to fight cancer. Scientists at University College London in the United Kingdom tested the safety of the experimental approach in six children — mostly toddlers — with advanced leukemia. One particular side effect associated with CAR T therapy is called a cytokine storm, and it can be deadly.
