The motives of the young man who tried to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump remain a mystery, even after the F.B.I. gained access to his cellphone on Monday and began analyzing its contents for clues, law enforcement officials said. The gunfire grazed the former president’s ear, killed a bystander and seriously injured two other people. The F.B.I., in a statement on Monday, cautioned that the investigation was still in the early stages. Technicians are in the middle of analyzing all of the gunman’s electronic devices, not just his phone, for his communications, browser history and social media activity, officials added.

The FBI said Sunday that the shooter at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania acted alone and that it is still actively investigating the shooter’s background – including working to gain access to his phone. “We are working to get access to the phone,” Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, said Sunday. Rojek confirmed the gun used in the shooting was an AR-style rifle that was purchased legally. FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate also said the FBI is “seeing that tick up in the aftermath of this event. “The violence we saw yesterday is an attack on democracy itself,” Garland said.

By the time intelligence collected on overseas ISIS targets connected the men to the terror group, they had already been vetted by immigration authorities and allowed into the country, officials said. The men remain in federal custody on immigration charges and will eventually be deported following the counterterror investigation into them. US officials and analysts who closely track Islamist terror groups do know that ISIS-K has dramatically ramped up its online propaganda machine. But that’s not necessarily a reliable gauge of the number of actual terrorists who may be trying to enter the United States, US officials argue. Or they could belong to a legacy terror group — like the FARC — that isn’t known for conducting attacks on US soil.

CNN —Commercial fishermen off the coast of Alaska have found what officials are concerned could be another spy balloon and are bringing it to shore with them, three sources familiar with the matter told CNN. The existence of high-altitude surveillance balloons burst into US consciousness last year, when a Chinese spy balloon appeared to blow off course and transited across the continental US. The US assessed that the spy balloon was part of an extensive surveillance program run by the Chinese military, as CNN reported at the time. There were three additional shootdowns of unidentified high-altitude objects in the weeks following the Chinese balloon incident. NORAD later said in a statement that the balloon was “likely a hobby balloon” that posed no threat.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has chosen a location for a new FBI headquarters in Maryland, people familiar with the selection said Wednesday as the suburban Washington location was selected over nearby Virginia following a sharp competition between the two states. Democratic Maryland Gov. Wes Moore argued in recent months that building it there would be fast and save taxpayers $1 billion. He said a headquarters in the majority-Black Prince George’s County would meet equity goals raised by President Joe Biden. In recent months, the two other finalists were Springfield, Virginia, and Landover, Maryland.

CNN —Sensitive personal information like the apparent home addresses and health conditions of thousands of active-duty US military personnel can be bought cheaply online from so-called data brokers, according to a study published Monday by Duke University researchers. The researchers could shop for data on servicemembers based on geolocation, including whether they lived or work near Fort Bragg, Quantico or other sensitive military locations. The Federal Trade Commission is currently considering new regulations to crack down on data brokers. “However, we have repeatedly raised concerns about the practices of data brokers and their potential impact on consumer privacy. The Pentagon and US intelligence community have long been concerned about how foreign spies might exploit the market for personal data on Americans.

Officials say the public can also play a critical role in this effort. A perverse byproduct of the rise in mass shootings is that it’s given investigators more and more useful information with which to draw a portrait of the typical killer. Gibson firmly believes some mass shootings can be prevented because mass shooters often follow a predictable pattern. While most mass shooters do not suffer from serious psychiatric illness, they can be troubled or distressed in some way. Ultimately, what makes the US so exceptional when it comes to mass shootings is how pervasive guns are.

Two active-duty Marines pleaded guilty on Monday to Capitol riot-related criminal charges. Both pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building, according to a spokesperson for the US Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. Coomer pleaded guilty to the same misdemeanor charge in May and is scheduled to be sentenced by Reyes on Aug. 30. The angles of the photos and the caption indicated he had been inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, the FBI said. Approximately 600 have pleaded guilty, mostly to misdemeanors punishable by maximum imprisonment of six months or one year.

Rising attended the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Va. Rising returned to the University of California, Los Angeles, in the fall, his football coach told him he was too lean to play tackle. But U.S. and Canadian authorities also announced they had called off searches for three unidentified objects shot down over last weekend, without locating any debris. The last of the debris from the Chinese balloon, which was downed by a Sidewinder missile, is heading to an FBI laboratory in Virginia for analysis, the U.S. military's Northern Command said. Reuters was first to report the conclusion of the recovery efforts for the suspected Chinese spy balloon, which were halted on Thursday. Kirby said the United States had already learned a lot about the balloon by observing it as it flew over the United States. "We will maintain the perspective that we have in terms of what should be the relationship between China and the United States," she said.

PHOENIX, Nov 7 (Reuters) - The campaign headquarters of Kari Lake, the Republican candidate for Arizona governor, reopened on Monday, a day after authorities began investigating a suspicious white powder that was delivered by mail to the Phoenix office over the weekend. Hobbs condemned the suspicious mail that was sent to her opponent's campaign, calling it "incredibly concerning." The Lake campaign and Phoenix police did not immediately respond to a request for more details. Lake was not at the Phoenix office when the mail was received, she said. Neither the FBI statement, nor those from the Phoenix police of fire departments, referred to Lake or her campaign by name.
The disruption came at a critical moment for the Lake campaign, locked in a tight race for governor with the Democratic nominee, Katie Hobbs, currently serving as Arizona's secretary of state. "Just two days before Election Day, our campaign headquarters remains shut down," the Lake campaign statement said. The FBI's field office in Phoenix said its agents and local law enforcement responded on Sunday morning to "a report of suspicious letters" at the location of the Phoenix campaign headquarters. Neither the FBI statement, nor the Phoenix police, referred to Lake or her campaign by name. The incident came nearly two weeks after a burglary of Hobbs' campaign headquarters.
While debating Senator Raphael Warnock, candidate Herschel Walker flashed a "prop" police badge in violation of the rules. While discussing their reputations working with law enforcement, Warnock noted Walker's past false claims of serving as a police officer, prompting Walker to flash the badge. "I said I worked with law enforcement, which I have," Walker told NewsNation, displaying the badge from Johnson County he had held up earlier. "I never said I went out to do anything, but I have worked with every law enforcement around the county." It is unclear whether Walker's badge is official or an honorary title akin to the one he had from Cobb County.
