2 Ohio State Buckeyes dominated the No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers 38-15 to earn a critical Big Ten win as they handed Indiana its first loss of the season. Ohio State hosts the Michigan Wolverines in Columbus, Ohio, while Indiana faces the Purdue Boilermakers in Bloomington, Indiana. If Ohio State loses, then Penn State would be in line to play Oregon if the Nittany Lions win their last two games. Indiana still has a chance with a win and a combination of losses between Ohio State and Penn State.

New face, same goals? Heads in Washington are still spinning after Donald Trump named Pam Bondi as his choice for attorney general, just hours following Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal from consideration. Bondi, a former Florida attorney general and close ally of the president-elect, would most likely share his and Gaetz’s goal of shaking up the Justice Department. But the switcheroo also raises questions about how willing Republicans might be to push back against the more divisive elements of the Trump agenda. What to know: As Florida’s attorney general, Bondi participated in efforts to overturn the Affordable Care Act and the legalization of marijuana, as well as a multi-state lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks are unique for many reasons. Kennedy brings his addiction worldview to prescription drugs such as those overseen by the Food and Drug Administration, which he would oversee if confirmed as HHS secretary. But Musk denied allegations of past drug use as reported in The Wall Street Journal early this year. Federal employees are barred from taking illegal drugs, and there are no reports to indicate that any of Trump’s Cabinet or other administration picks are using illegal drugs. CNN has reported that this year, Trump’s team is bypassing long and cumbersome FBI background checks for some of his Cabinet picks.

James Mintert, director of Purdue University's Center for Commercial Agriculture, expects land values to likely flatten in the short term. Higher estate tax exemptions approved under the Trump administration's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 are set to expire next year. She added: "Let's be clear that the Trump administration resulted in a trade deficit, one of the highest we've ever seen in the history of America." Attorneys general in 14 different states filed lawsuits against TikTok last week. The suits mirror earlier ones against Big Tobacco and Purdue Pharma, legal experts told BI. The Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharma, ultimately paid over $3 billion in settlements for misleading advertising related to their products. Purdue Pharma later filed for bankruptcy, but the Supreme Court struck down a $7 billion bankruptcy plan in June that would have given the Sackler's immunity from future civil suits. With the prospect of that federal ban looming next year, a slew of federal lawsuits helps shape public opinion and "pressure lawmakers to act," Rahmani said.

J&J’s Red River Talc unit made its filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. J&J faces lawsuits from more than 62,000 claimants who alleged that its baby powder and other talc products were contaminated with asbestos and caused ovarian and other cancers. After being rebuffed twice by federal courts, New Brunswick New Jersey-based J&J is attempting again to end the litigation in a so-called “Texas two-step” bankruptcy. J&J said the Red River unit filed the bankruptcy case after it received support of about 83% of current claimants for the proposed bankruptcy plan. The goal is to use the proceeding to force all plaintiffs into one settlement, without requiring J&J itself to file for bankruptcy.

New York CNN —Federal Reserve officials won’t say how former President Donald Trump winning a second term could impact the economy. But transcripts of closed-door Fed meetings from Trump’s first term give some clues about top economists’ true feelings about Trump’s economic agenda. “We don’t want to be involved … in politics in any way,” Powell said after July’s monetary policy meeting. The transcripts of past meetings that are publicly available, the most recent being from the December 2018 monetary policy meeting, suggest that some Fed officials had legitimate concerns about Trump’s trade policy and its impact on the economy. ‘Ill-conceived US government policies’At later meetings, as the Trump administration began to set the stage for a potential trade war with China, Fed officials started to sound more concerned.

July marked a third straight month that egg prices rose on an annual basis, a reversal from a year of relative decreases. The culprit was a continued battle against the highly pathogenic avian influenza, known in short as HPAI or the bird flu. Inflation in egg prices became a focus for consumers during the pandemic given their ubiquity in everyday cooking. The bird flu had a historic outbreak in 2022 and surged once again at the end of 2023. That can underscore the impact of any bird flu outbreaks on the prices customers see on grocery store shelves.

— President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act into law on Aug. 9, 2022, authorizing nearly $53 billion to rebuild the nation’s semiconductor industry. A Purdue University summer program gives undergrads hands-on experience in the chip-development process. The domestic semiconductor manufacturing workforce has dropped from a peak of 714,500 in 2001 to 392,100 as of July, according to government data. In addition, the CHIPS Program Office, run out of the Commerce Department, has announced major commitments for research and development, including workforce skilling, with a $5 billion package unveiled in February. The Food and Drug Administration’s “hands-off approach” to food additives, including those found in ultraprocessed foods and energy drinks, may allow unsafe ingredients to enter the nation’s food supply, according to the authors of an editorial published Thursday. While food manufacturers can request an FDA review of new ingredients before they are added to products — and they sometimes do — they are not required to do so. From 1990 to 2010, an estimated 1,000 substances were labeled GRAS by manufacturers and were used without notifying the agency, Pomeranz said, citing earlier research. Since then, she added, there have likely been many more ingredients added to the nation’s food supply without the FDA’s oversight. “We have no idea how many substances are in the food supply based on this self-GRAS mechanism,” Pomeranz said.
