Three people were charged in relation to the death of singer Liam Payne, Argentina's public prosecutor announced in a statement Thursday. The prosecutor's statement said that during the investigation into Payne's death, "illicit conduct was discovered from which three people were charged with the crimes of abandonment of a person followed by death, supply and facilitation of narcotics." Someone who was with Payne on a daily basis while he was in Buenos Aires is charged with abandoning a person following death, Andrés Madrea's statement said. CNN —More than 2,000 unionized mental health workers in Southern California went on strike against Kaiser Permanente on Monday after the two sides failed to reach a new labor agreement. The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) — which represents 19,000 healthcare workers in California and Hawaii, including 4,700 mental health workers — picketed outside Kaiser facilities in Los Angeles, San Diego, Anaheim and Fontana, seeking an increase in salaries, restoration of pensions and increased staffing. Union members on strike in Southern California have said their demands are line in with what Kaiser has provided to the majority of its workforce. Kaiser, one of the nation’s largest non-profit healthcare providers, is required by law to provide mental health services to its members even with the workers on strike. A survey in 2022 from CNN in partnership with the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that nine out of 10 US adults believe the country has a mental health crisis.

Carroll (Opinion guest essay, July 7):The dwindling number of physicians choosing to pursue pediatrics is a grave concern to me as a pediatric resident physician, particularly given the increasing number of children with complex medical needs and chronic conditions. Soaring rates of pediatric mental health challenges have also strained the general pediatricians who navigate providing care in busy clinic schedules while our patients wait months to see psychiatrists or developmental pediatricians. Dr. Carroll notes that low reimbursement for pediatric care is a key reason for lack of interest in the specialty, with about half of American children insured by Medicaid or CHIP. The evidence is clear that health in childhood predicts health later in life. Pediatricians have the opportunity to address issues that can lead to lifelong health challenges early, from diabetes to substance use, ultimately saving the health care system money.

Roughly 15% of participants who discontinued antidepressants experienced withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, insomnia and irritability, according to the review published Wednesday in the journal The Lancet Psychiatry. The review is the first publication of a larger project on antidepressant withdrawal symptoms, the authors said. The authors also discovered the medications most often linked with withdrawal symptoms were desvenlafaxine, venlafaxine, imipramine and escitalopram. The rate of withdrawal symptoms in pharma-funded studies was about the same as trials not funded by pharmaceutical companies. The study didn’t provide information on the duration of withdrawal symptoms, but other research suggests they can last for up to two weeks in most cases, Keedwell said.
