Momo Productions | Digitalvision | Getty ImagesWhile many investors have flocked to exchange-traded funds, they haven't gained much ground with 401(k) plan participants. The report found that 401(k) plans used ETFs most readily for sector and commodity funds — but even then, they did so just 3% of the time. Key benefits are 'irrelevant'Mutual funds, collective investment trust funds and separately managed accounts held the lion's share of the 401(k) assets across all investment categories, PSCA data shows. Thomas is among what retirement experts are calling "silver squatters" — adults in their mid-50s who are even more woefully unprepared than some boomers, despite being about a decade away from retirement. This group of Gen Xers — the generation of Americans aged 43 to 59 — largely expects to postpone or work past their retirement. AdvertisementA majority also don't expect to receive any inheritance, despite their boomer predecessors holding onto trillions in wealth. The gap in retirement readiness could be due to the "unique" challenges of Gen Xers, according to Dylan Tyson, the head of retirement strategies at Prudential. Read previewRevolut has secured a $45 million valuation via a secondary share sale, despite a wider slump in fintech valuations. The London-based neo-bank, which recently secured a banking license in the UK, has signed agreements with institutional investors over a share sale that significantly boosts the company's valuation. That round came at the height of the tech market's COVID-19 boom, and Revolut has not raised primary capital from investors since. This secondary deal allows employees to profit from their stakes in the company and also cements the fintech as Europe's most valuable tech startup ahead of a prospective IPO. Revolut has 45 million customers and offers bank accounts, savings options, and trading in stocks and cryptocurrencies.

British fintech startup Revolut on Friday said it was valued at $45 billion in a secondary share sale with existing and new investors. The $45 billion transaction sharply increases the company's valuation from the $33 billion notched in July 2021. The valuation comes just weeks after Revolut was granted a banking license with restrictions in the U.K., ending a three-year wait after first applying for the license in 2021. The license allows Revolut to take customer deposits and issue products such as loans and credit cards. The company is now set to build up banking infrastructure in the U.K. before the official launch.

New York CNN —With interest rate cuts on the backburner, Wall Street is looking to corporate earnings to continue powering the 2024 stock market rally. Analysts polled by FactSet expect second-quarter earnings of S&P 500 companies to grow about 8.7% on average from the prior year. Strong corporate earnings have helped the S&P 500 gain a whopping 16% and notch repeated record high closes this year. Since the Fed isn’t likely to cut rates anytime soon, the onus is on strong corporate earnings to continue driving the market rally. Earnings season kicks off July 12 when big banks including JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup report results.

“What worries policymakers is the interest rate risk, which will rise once the dominant narrative shifts from deflation to reflation,” Hu from Macquarie said. If that happens, bond yields will rise as investors switch back into riskier stocks. The country’s “4,000 or so small and medium-sized banks” will be particularly vulnerable to the interest rate risk, he added. “The bubble formed by the rush of funds into the bond market is accumulating interest rate risks,” the Securities Times said in an editorial. LONDON — The boss of British financial technology giant Revolut told CNBC he is optimistic about the company's chances of being granted a U.K. banking license, as a jump in users saw the firm report record full-year pre-tax profits. Several small financial institutions have been able to win approval for a banking license with few customers, he added. "U.K. banking licenses are being approved for smaller companies," Storonsky said. A bank license would enable it to offer loans in the U.K. One conditions set by the Bank of England for granting Revolut its U.K. banking license, was to collapse its six classes of shares into ordinary shares.

Lower Social Security COLA forecast for 2025Unlike most other sources of retirement income, Social Security benefits are automatically adjusted for inflation each year. As current retirees continue to feel the pinch of higher costs, slowing inflation points to a lower Social Security cost-of-living adjustment next year. The Social Security cost-of-living adjustment may be 3% in 2025, estimates Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare analyst. In contrast, beneficiaries saw a 3.2% Social Security cost-of-living adjustment this year — resulting in an average retirement benefit increase of just over $50 per month. That followed record high Social Security cost-of-living adjustments of 8.7% in 2023 and 5.9% in 2022.

Sixteen thousand people erupted into rapture when Donald J. Trump walked into the Prudential Center in Newark at 10 p.m. Saturday to attend an Ultimate Fighting Championship match. He stayed until the grisly end, at 1:15 a.m. It was his first public outing since being convicted on 34 felony counts two days earlier. He walked out to Kid Rock’s “American Bad Ass,” a rock-rap trailer park anthem that samples Metallica’s “Sad But True” and has become the unofficial soundtrack of Mr. Trump’s quest to recapture the White House. When it comes to claiming Social Security retirement benefits, experts agree it's generally best to delay. Yet many people still claim early — either at the earliest possible age of 62 or before their full retirement age. Those early claims result in reduced Social Security benefits for life. To get 100% of the benefits you've earned, you need to wait until full retirement age — between age 66 and 67, depending on your date of birth. Here's what experts say to the most common arguments for claiming Social Security benefits as soon as possible.

That doesn’t mean the battle against inflation is won. Walmart saw first-quarter sales at stores open at least a year climb 3.8% from the prior year, in part thanks to its ability to keep prices low even as inflation remains sticky. “Our combination of everyday low prices plus a large number of rollbacks is resonating” with consumers, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on a call with analysts. Investors will get more inflation data next week from the Personal Consumption Expenditures index for April. Without that discount, the combined fine would have topped £88 million ($112 million).
