The Summary Trump plans to tap Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be his health and human services secretary. Kennedy has spread misinformation about vaccines, fluoride, raw milk and other topics. Kennedy has also referred to the Covid vaccine as “the deadliest vaccine ever made,” despite data showing it’s overwhelmingly safe. As many as 30 states allow raw milk to be sold, but the FDA regulates its sale across state lines. But Kennedy has cast doubt on those findings, claiming without evidence that the drugs were discredited because various groups stood to make money off Covid vaccines.

The stakes are high for psilocybin clinical trials — there’s a pressing need for a more effective medical solution in the fight against depression, especially treatment-resistant depression. “People begin to feel, understand and appreciate that their brain can change and they can escape from their depression,” Nutt said. “For that reason alone, this research matters.”At six weeks, the study found no significant difference in depression scores between the antidepressant and psilocybin groups. In fact, Madras said, adverse effects are such a concern that researchers in psychedelic clinical trials often actively recruit people who have successfully taken psychedelics in the past. In a study using psilocybin for alcohol substance abuse, for example, some 95% of those involved correctly guessed whether they were taking psilocybin or the placebo.

I’m 36 — when do I have to give up crop tops?
  + stars: | 2024-09-01 | by ( Jacqui Palumbo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —As a pre-teen in Y2K, the (small) shadows of crop tops loomed large. In a decade when unforgiving low-rise jeans were the norm — and criticism over women’s bodies perfunctory — crop tops were not casual, easy wear; any softness of the torso was considered an aberration. Now that I’m 36, crop tops have become an unlikely staple in my wardrobe, and I’m reluctant to let them go. Can I still wear crop tops in my forties? I can also keep wearing crop tops for as long as I feel like it — after all, whenever I see a woman a generation ahead of me owning her personal style and at ease with herself, it gives me something to aspire to.

CNN —When Adelaide Saywell posted on TikTok last month that SSRIs, a commonly prescribed antidepressant medication, could make people more vulnerable to heat, it went viral and sparked a deluge of comments. Adelaide Saywell received a flood of surprised comments when she posted about the link between SSRIs and heat intolerance. Dehydration puts people at risk of heat exhaustion and, in particularly severe cases, heat stroke, which is dangerous and potentially deadly. Sondeep Shankar/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesScientists and doctors are still trying to unpick the complex relationship between SSRIs and heat. It is partly the reason why medical professionals don’t always talk about heat when they prescribe these anti-depressants.

Weight gain is also a reason why some stop their medications despite feeling less depressed or anxious while using them. Now, a new study sheds light on just how much weight gain might occur — on average — while taking eight of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants. Weight gain by poundsThe study, published Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, used electronic health record prescription and body mass to compare weight gain among more than 183,000 people. Not all patients perceive weight gain negatively, although it is more common for patients to want to avoid weight gain than to seek it when taking an antidepressant, Petimar said. “Our study didn’t explore reasons why bupropion was associated with less weight gain than other antidepressants, but other studies have similarly concluded that it is associated with less weight gain than other common antidepressants,” he added.

Alphabet announced on Wednesday that Eli Lilly Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi will be its new CFO after an almost year-long search. Shares of Eli Lilly have soared 90% in the past year and are trading at a record. When she joined Eli Lilly in 2001, she came in through the company's new venture capital division, which was co-founded by her then-spouse Ron Laufer. Fastest growth in decadesFounded in 1876, Eli Lilly has long been one of the major U.S. pharmaceutical companies. But the last couple years have marked a period of historic growth for Eli Lilly due to the exploding popularity of GLP-1s.

It will mean fundamentally reevaluating our conception of free will and human agency — and reckoning with our tortured relationship with shame. Many health plans have refused to cover GLP-1s for weight loss , citing limited approval from the Food and Drug Administration. I don't know when I first became overweight, but I remember the moment I was taught to be ashamed of it. They can stop the vicious feedback loop where our food choices and weight drive the shame that drives our food choices and weight. But no matter how heavy that burden was, one thing made it easier to bear: I wasn't weighed down by my shame.

What weight tells us about our health
  + stars: | 2024-01-17 | by ( Dr. Sanjay Gupta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
(CNN) — If you’ve been paying attention to health news recently, you may have noticed a subtle but real shift in the way society discusses body weight. Beyond health care dollarsDespite changing attitudes about larger bodies, excess weight does carry a price. From a health care standpoint, it costs the country a lot of money. According to a study published in the journal The Lancet in 2020, 27% of total health care expenditures in 2016 — about $730.4 billion — could be attributed to “modifiable risk factors” for preventable health conditions like cardiovascular disease. That was eight years ago, when our total health care expenditure was $2.7 trillion, according to the study.

The safety label on Prozac, one of the most widely prescribed S.S.R.I.s, warns that sexual problems may persist after the drug is discontinued. sexual dysfunction. Clinical trials have not followed people after they stop the drugs to determine whether such sexual problems stem from the medications. Dr. Clayton published some of the earliest research showing that S.S.R.I.s come with widespread sexual side effects. She worries that too much attention on seemingly rare cases of sexual dysfunction after S.S.R.I.s are stopped could dissuade suicidal patients from trying the medications.

A Huge Threat to the U.S. Budget Has Receded. For decades, runaway Medicare spending was the story of the federal budget. Budget news often sounds apocalyptic, but the Medicare trend has been unexpectedly good for federal spending, saving taxpayers a huge amount relative to projections. In a recent letter to the Senate Budget Committee, economists at the Congressional Budget Office described the huge reductions in its Medicare forecasts between 2010 and 2020. Medicare is growing more slowly than ever, but still more quickly than the rest of the federal budget.

Opinion | Anxiety in the Age of Barbie

It was “the summer of girl power,” a tour de force by a glittering troika. With pink dream houses, songs and sequins, Barbie, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé buoyed the economy and sent women’s confidence soaring. It is a major topic among moms: daughters struggling with anxiety or the effects of anti-anxiety medications, which can include weight gain and loss of libido. Many young college women are ping-ponging between anxiety, without pills, and numbness and body insecurity, with them. These young women seem to have everything, yet they are unable to fully enjoy a stretch in their life that should be sizzling with adventure and promise.

Eli Lilly CEO Dave Ricks told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday his top priority was to meet demand for the company's drug, Mounjaro, which is currently only approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat diabetes but is expected to soon be cleared to treat obesity, along with other health conditions. Eli Lilly stock surged 15% Tuesday after its better-than-expected earnings report. He likened obesity to depression, noting Eli Lilly's role in manufacturing Prozac, the depression drug. We know that's not true, there's something called clinical depression," Ricks said. I think in five, 10 years we'll look back and think about chronic weight management and obesity the same way."

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a crank. Yet now that Ron DeSantis’s campaign (slogan: “woke woke immigrants woke woke”) seems to be on the skids, Kennedy is suddenly getting support from some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley. Jack Dorsey, who founded Twitter, has endorsed him, while some other prominent tech figures have been holding fund-raisers on his behalf. So what does all this tell us about the role of technology billionaires in modern American political life? What the Silicon Valley Kennedy boomlet shows is that this is actually part of a broader phenomenon.

And while he isn’t going to win, he’ll certainly draw a lot of attention. Even loyal Democrats have gotten kinda bored with our current president, and nobody really loves the idea of him celebrating his 86th birthday in the White House. It’s very clear that many of the folks who’ve told pollsters they want to nominate R.F.K. There was a time — a very long time ago — when the world knew him mainly as a battler for the environment. And even though he must realize his anti-pharmaceutical ranting is not going to win him the nomination, he doesn’t seem quite able to contain himself.

Elon Musk hosted RFK Jr. in a bizarre Twitter Spaces conversation littered with falsehoods and conspiracy theories. Kennedy compared Musk to patriots who died in the Revolutionary War. "Thank you for your service to our country, Elon," Kennedy said. Musk, who is South African but has American citizenship, bought Twitter last year for $44 billion. He also laid the blame for the massive increase in mass shootings not on guns, but on pharmaceutical companies for marketing antidepressants.

Mr. Kennedy said he now had “about 50 people” working for his campaign. Instead, he has used his campaign platform — and his famous name — to promote misinformation and ideas that have little traction in his party. Asked during the discussion by David Sacks, a top DeSantis donor who is also close to Mr. Musk, “what happened to the Democratic Party,” Mr. Kennedy spent nine uninterrupted minutes attacking Mr. Biden as a warmonger and claimed that their party was under the control of the pharmaceutical industry. “I think the Democratic Party became the party of war,” Mr. Kennedy said. “I attribute that directly to President Biden.” He added, “He has always been in favor of very bellicose, pugnacious and aggressive foreign policy, and he believes that violence is a legitimate political tool for achieving America’s objectives abroad.”

After a spate of mass shootings in the US, right-wing figures have suggested a link to antidepressants. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Tucker Carlson have claimed several mass shooters took SSRIs, suggesting they are to blame. Greene has previously made similar comments linking antidepressants to mass shootings, as has former Fox News host Tucker Carlson"A lot of young men in America are going nuts. However, Carlson and Greene's theories fail to note that many mass shooters had no history of taking psychiatric medication. As the gun control debate continues, Democrats and Republicans have drawn up distinctly different plans to prevent future mass shootings.
The infusions at the ketamine clinic in his West Texas hometown were a Christmas gift from his grandmother. About five years ago, more and more of my friends started using ketamine recreationally. IV ketamine treatment centers charging $400 to $2,000 an infusion popped up all over the country. "Ketamine used as directed in an appropriate clinical setting very rarely leads to any dependence," Mindbloom says on its website. Like Nadia, most of the people I interviewed said when they started using ketamine, they didn't think it was possible to become dependent on it.
But inside the walls at Ware, one of the state’s largest juvenile detention facilities, children have been trying to kill themselves with stunning regularity. In Louisiana, where brutal conditions prompted juvenile justice reform two decades ago, the system is again in crisis. Most Ware guards are Black, as well, though nearly all of its leaders are white, as are the local judge, sheriff and district attorney. “Of course, they still do.” In reports to the state, Ware’s nurses described carpet burns on children’s faces and head-to-toe bruises from restraints. In fact, of the four guards convicted of sexually assaulting children at Ware, Mr. Peace would be the only one imprisoned.

Like 95% of all British cuisine, it is comprised entirely of eggs, flour, milk and fat. By the age of 16, the average British child will have eaten this dish 4,160 times.
