HONG KONG — Former Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai began testifying Wednesday in his landmark national security trial that is widely seen as a measure of press freedom and judicial independence in the Chinese territory. He is fighting charges of colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security and conspiring with others to issue seditious publications. Lai, 76, faces up to life in prison if convicted under a national security law imposed by Beijing. But critics say that promise has become threadbare under the rubric of maintaining national security. It added that judges remain independent and partial when handling national security cases.

New York CNN —Press freedom groups sounded the alarm Wednesday on the potential dangers facing journalists under a second Trump administration, denouncing threats from the president-elect and his associates to undermine the news media. “On the campaign trail and during his previous administration, President-elect Donald Trump has frequently deployed violent language and threats against the media. His election to a second term in office marks a dangerous moment for American journalism and global press freedom,” Reporters Without Borders said. In the run-up to Election Day, Trump repeatedly threatened the Fourth Estate, often employing extreme and authoritarian rhetoric. CNN —An American-Iranian journalist who once worked for a US-funded broadcaster is believed to have been detained in Iran, according to his former employer and multiple press freedom groups. Iran has not acknowledged detaining Valizadeh and the Iranian mission to the United Nations has declined to comment on his situation. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, which focuses on Iran, also believes Valizadeh is being held in Evin. Iran has a long history of using dual nationals as bargaining chips in its troubled relationship with the West. It is currently marking the 25th anniversary of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, in which 52 US citizens were held captive for 444 days.

That’s the takeaway from a new Committee to Protect Journalists report about the state of press freedom in the US. The Committee to Protect Journalists has historically called attention to journalists being arrested and killed in repressive regimes. According to the US Press Freedom Tracker, assaults on journalists in the US have soared by more than 50% in 2024 compared to last year. JERUSALEM — Almost 12 months of unbridled war, death, destruction and suffering in Gaza have proved the deadliest conflict on record for journalists. One year in, NBC News has spoken to 21 media professionals and organizations in the region who described killings, attacks and arrests by Israeli forces. The majority, 111, were Palestinians killed in Gaza, three were Lebanese and two were Israeli journalists killed by Hamas militants on Oct. 7. The majority were killed in Gaza, including Al Jazeera’s Ismail Al-Ghoul and his freelance cameraman Rami Al Refee, both 27. “The thing is no one is safe in Gaza,” she said last month when asked if she thought Israel was deliberately targeting journalists in Gaza.

When a journalist is killed, it is not just their voice that is silenced: Press freedom is your freedom. Over 30 years ago, the United Nations recognized May 3 as World Press Freedom Day: a global reminder of the importance of press freedom and an opportunity to assess its health around the world. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) found that at least 100 journalists and media workers have been killed since we last marked World Press Freedom Day. Tragically, on this World Press Freedom Day, our work is needed more than ever. On this World Press Freedom Day, the fallen who gave their lives for the truth should serve as a reminder as to why press freedom is really your freedom.

CNN —Terry Anderson, the former Mideast correspondent for The Associated Press who was kidnapped in 1985 and held captive for nearly seven years in Lebanon, has died at 76, his daughter told CNN. The cause of death was unknown, though his daughter told the AP he had recently had heart surgery. “You’re sorry, sorry for your family, sorry you were dumb enough to get captured,” Anderson told CNN once about his capture. In a 2016 interview, Anderson told CNN that he didn’t think about his captivity often. And you do it, day after day after day,” he said.

CNN —Several journalists, including a CNN stringer, were injured in an attack on a refugee camp in central Gaza, amid mounting concerns about media workers being killed and injured while covering Israel’s military campaign. CNN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment on the attack and on allegations that journalists were targeted at the camp. CNN —A prominent exiled Iranian journalist was stabbed outside his home in London on Friday, prompting British police to launch a counterterrorism investigation. Pouria Zeraati, a television anchor at the UK-based channel Iran International, was reportedly attacked by a group of men outside his home in south-western Wimbledon. Iran has designated the television station a “terrorist entity.” Iranian state media has repeatedly accused the channel of fomenting unrest. Zeraati’s stabbing comes after an investigation by Britain’s ITV last year revealed that Iranian spies had attempted to pay a people smuggler $200,000 to assassinate two Iran International journalists. Kearns noted on Twitter that Iran International had only recently returned to the air from London after having to shut down in the UK.

Unable to serve an administration that enables such atrocities, I have decided to resign from my position at the Department of State. Whatever credibility the United States had as an advocate for human rights has almost entirely vanished since the war began. By resigning publicly, I am saddened by the knowledge that I likely foreclose a future at the State Department. Yet just recently, the State Department ascertained that Israel is in compliance with international law in the conduct of the war and in providing humanitarian assistance. After four years of then-President Donald Trump’s efforts to cripple the department, State employees embraced Biden’s pledge to rebuild American diplomacy.
