London CNN —The teenager charged with the murder of three young girls in a July stabbing attack at a dance class in northwest England will face a terrorism charge, British prosecutors announced Tuesday. The new charges he faces in relation to the attack in the town of Southport, England, are in addition to three charges of murder, 10 charges of attempted murder and one charge of possession of a knife. “Searches of Axel Rudakubana’s home address resulted in an unknown substance being found – testing confirmed the substance was ricin,” Kennedy told reporters at a news conference. The attack on July 29 has not been declared a terrorist incident, the police chief said. The matter for which Axel Rudakubana has been charged with under the Terrorism Act does not require motive to be established.

CNN —A man in Northern Ireland has been sentenced to life for several crimes, including manslaughter, after using social media sites to blackmail and sexually abuse at least 70 minors in several countries. Catfishing – often used on social media - is when a person uses false information and images to create a fake identity online with the intention of tricking, harassing, or scamming another person. According to authorities, McCartney pretended to be a young girl, befriended victims on social media and manipulated them into sending him nude images of themselves. “All McCartney’s victims were young, innocent children” as young as 10 years old and “struggling with identity and body image issues and had reached out for help on social media,” Kierans said. CNN affiliate Virgin Media News reported that McCartney mainly used the popular social media app Snapchat to target his victims.

Former British nurse and convicted child serial killer Lucy Letby on Thursday lost an attempt to appeal against her conviction for trying to murder a newborn baby, amid questions over the fairness of her trials. Judge William Davis refused Letby’s application for leave to appeal against the conviction from her retrial. Letby attended the hearing by videolink from prison and sat impassively as the judge stated the court’s reasons for refusing her application. She can now only challenge those convictions if the Criminal Cases Review Commission refer those cases back to the Court of Appeal. Since her trials, Letby’s conviction has come under a spotlight, following criticism by some experts of medical and statistical evidence presented by the prosecution.

London CNN —Former BBC news presenter Huw Edwards has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment suspended for two years by a London court for having indecent images of children, according to PA Media. Edwards, who was the BBC’s highest-paid journalist, pleaded guilty in July to having 41 indecent images of children. The adult man who sent Edwards the images is a convicted pedophile, the court heard on Monday. Edwards sent him hundreds of pounds “apparently off the back of (him) sending pornographic images,” prosecutor Ian Hope said. No more illegal images were sent after that message, the court heard, but the pair were said to continue exchanging legal pornographic images until April 2022.

The charges related to images allegedly shared on WhatsApp, a police spokesperson said. Police charged Edwards, a former anchor of the BBC’s News at Ten bulletin, last month, the statement said. “The offences, which are alleged to have taken place between December 2020 and April 2022, relate to images shared on a WhatsApp chat,” the statement said. CNN —A verdict is expected in the coming hours in the espionage case of the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, with Russian prosecutors seeking an 18-year prison sentence in what his employer and the US government have dismissed as a sham trial. CNN —Three people in Germany have been arrested under suspicion of spying for China, while two people have been charged in the United Kingdom for espionage offenses. “Allegations suggest the suspects have had ties to a Chinese secret service since before June 2022,” the German prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
