HONG KONG — A Hong Kong man pleaded guilty Monday to sedition for wearing a T-shirt bearing a protest slogan, in the Chinese territory’s first conviction under new local national security legislation. He was arrested in November while wearing the shirt at the Hong Kong airport. Sedition is generally defined as inciting hatred or contempt against the Chinese central government, the Hong Kong government or the judiciary. Officials said the local legislation was necessary to close “loopholes” in a national security law that Beijing imposed in 2020, which did not cover sedition. Hong Kong and Chinese officials say both laws were necessary to restore stability after the protests, which sometimes turned violent.

watch nowDrugmakers are betting that delivering radiation directly to tumors will become the next big cancer breakthrough. That can allow the treatment to deliver radiation to cancer cells and spare the rest of the body from the level of damage that comes with many cancer drugs. For Pluvicto, patients come in once every six weeks for up to six treatments. One opportunity Bristol Myers Squibb sees is combining radiopharmaceuticals with existing cancer drugs like immunotherapy, said Robert Plenge, Bristol's chief research officer. But she thinks the technology will become an important part of cancer drugs in the next decade.

The 16 teams that lost last week look to bounce back with performances that reflect improvement and promise. Rodgers completed 13 of 21 passes for 167 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and the Jets managed just 68 rushing yards. Why Trump’s trade hero turned against tariffs
  + stars: | 2024-09-14 | by ( Zachary B. Wolf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +15 min
Vice President Kamala Harris has lambasted Trump’s tariff plan as a tax, but President Joe Biden has maintained tariffs Trump put in place during his presidency. We used trade policy, or tariffs, as a form of reciprocity, where we said, OK, our tariffs are pretty high. So that’s what led to all these trade agreements, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, GATT, which became the WTO (World Trade Organization), NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and other free trade agreements that we’ve reached. He began to entertain this idea of reciprocity, of trying to reduce foreign tariffs by offering cuts in our tariffs. How do those tariffs compare with the late 19th century tariffs?

Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden threw shade at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Friday over Trump's latest campaign promise: to eliminate income taxes on overtime pay. "Donald Trump is losing, and these tax proposals he's floating out of desperation are as fake as his tan," Wyden said in a statement. The Oregon Democrat who leads the Senate tax writing panel said the former president "knows Republicans in Congress have no intention of passing this stuff." Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung fired back at Wyden, telling CNBC the senator "shouldn't be disrespecting hard-working Americans and taking money out of their pockets." "But it's not surprising coming from a loser like Wyden who has a history of persecuting everyday Americans," Cheung added.

Boeing Co. workers and supporters hold signs outside the Aerospace Machinists Union District 751 Hall ahead of a vote on the union contract in Renton, Washington, US, on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024. More than 30,000 Boeing workers were set to strike Friday, halting production of most of the company's aircraft after staff overwhelmingly rejected a new labor contract. Workers in the Seattle area and in Oregon voted 94.6% against a tentative agreement that Boeing and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers unveiled Sunday. They voted 96% to strike, far more than the two-thirds vote required for a work stoppage. He characterized it as an "unfair labor practice strike," alleging that factory workers had experienced "discriminatory conduct, coercive questioning, unlawful surveillance and we had unlawful promise of benefits."

Chinese regulators on Friday hit PwC's auditing unit in mainland China with a six-month business suspension and a record fine of 441 million yuan ($62 million) over the firm's audit of troubled property developer China Evergrande Group . Ukraine has been anticipating a Russian reaction and a counteroffensive is in line with the ‘Ukrainian plan,’ Zelensky said. Zelensky has previously said that the surprise attack on Russia’s Kursk region was the initial step in a four-part “victory plan.”The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement Thursday that Russian forces had “penetrated” into the Kursk region, capturing 10 settlements. On August 6, Ukrainian forces stormed into the Kursk region in a shock, lightning strike that caught even American officials by surprise. CNN —Attorney General Merrick Garland slammed efforts to turn the Justice Department into a “political weapon” during a fiery speech Thursday to department staff and US attorneys from across the country amid attacks from former President Donald Trump and his allies. Trump and his associates have publicly discussed plans to dismantle the department and its law enforcement components like the FBI, or to prosecute his political enemies. Trump has repeatedly attacked the Justice Department under Biden, claiming without evidence that the president has used the department to criminally pursue him and his allies for political purposes. “They weaponized the Justice Department. Garland also thanked the prosecutors and Justice Department staff for refusing to “bend to politics” and “break under pressure.”“You deserve better,” he said.

US District Judge Lewis Kaplan scheduled the hearing after Ryan Salame, a former executive of Alameda Research and FTX Digital Markets, tried to withdraw his guilty plea. Salame said prosecutors broke a promise to him by later indicting his romantic partner, Michelle Bond — a claim that prosecutors vigorously disputed. Instead, Kaplan grilled Salame under oath for over 30 minutes in his Manhattan courtroom Thursday morning, accusing him of misrepresenting the plea negotiations. That left Kaplan in a bind: Either Salame lied in his plea hearing, throwing the plea into doubt. Bond would not be pursued if I plead guilty," Salame said.

Two of Wall Street's biggest banks are adopting new policies to mitigate overwork and burnout for their junior investment bankers. Bank of America will use a new tool to better track working hours for junior bankers, the Journal report said, and flag HR when those go above 80. But the nature of investment banking work makes it hard to believe that such guardrails will stand the test of time. He completed an internship at an investment bank in New York last summer and accepted a return offer to start full time in 2025. If senior banking staff don't unilaterally enforce the cap and take it seriously, junior bankers can feel pressure to let the rules slide for the sake of the team and their own careers.

Among other benefits increases, the contract would increase union members’ pay by last least 25% over four years. Union members have launched a series of protests this week outside of Boeing plants and may ultimately reject the new contract union leaders negotiated with Boeing management. The deal will be officially approved if more than 50% of the members vote in favor of the tentative agreement. That would prevent a strike, no matter how many workers vote to strike. If just more than a third of members vote against a strike, then the contract takes effect, no matter the results of the ratification vote.
