The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning until 6 p.m. Thursday – which is used to describe “extreme and life-threatening fire behavior.” The warning is expected to affect 27 million people in Southern California and the greater San Francisco Bay area. More than 14,000 people remain under evacuation orders, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. Kapoor added that fires are part of the “Los Angeles reality” and all professors could do was follow guidance from emergency officials and reassure students. The Mountain Fire in Ventura County, California, has damaged or destroyed several homes, officials said. More than 11,000 Southern California Edison customers across five counties had power shut off Wednesday morning.

More than any other technology, the automobile has shaped America's economy, infrastructure, climate, culture, and identity. To provide a comprehensive road map of America's automotive psyche, Business Insider took a close look at what's actually on the road today. Combing through 1.7 million listings on CarGurus, we analyzed thousands of makes and models in three key areas: geographic location, political preference, and color. And why does it seem as if every vehicle on the road today is either white, black, or gray? By entering your own vehicle and town, you can compare what you drive with the makes and models favored by the rest of the country.

But when you delve deeper into our database of 1.7 million car listings, all sorts of geographic quirks emerge. Yet in and around the state capital of Jackson, where per capita income exceeds the national average, five of the 10 most popular cars are Mercedes-Benzes. In Rutherford County, Tennessee, where the nearby Nissan plant cranks out 2,500 vehicles a day, four of the 10 most popular cars are Nissans. Nine of the 10 most popular cars in Spartanburg, South Carolina, are foreign — yet not a single one of them is a BMW, whose nearby plant employs 100,000 people. And in Alameda County, California, whose Fremont plant turns out most of the country's Teslas, not a single one of the 10 favorite vehicles is a Tesla.

We were just getting acquainted as she carefully merged on and off a series of highways in her blue Toyota Prius. Why hybrid sales surge as EV sales flatten

After years of being overshadowed by flashy electric vehicles from Tesla and others, the hybrid — a gas sipper that has both an engine and an electric motor — is back in the spotlight. Hybrid sales grew five times faster than EV sales in February 2024, according to Morgan Stanley. But soon after that, Tesla sparked EV mania with its sleek, quick electric Roadster and Model S, shoving the hybrid to the margins. About two years later, sales of hybrids and plug-ins increased nearly 28% over the previous year. Toyota is not the only one capitalizing on hybrid sales.

Sales growth for hybrid cars is outpacing growth for electric vehicles this year. AdvertisementIt's shaping up to be a comeback year for hybrid cars — and that's partly because they're now nearly as good as their conventional vehicles, according to a Ford executive. Frick's comments come as demand for hybrid vehicles soars, partly due to drivers' worries about charging electric cars. The electric 1,093-horsepower Taycan Turbo GT, coming to market this summer, has already set two race track speed record for an electric car. High horsepower numbers and eye-popping acceleration are more common among electric cars than gasoline-powered ones, especially since EVs can have multiple motors. This Turbo GT, a new version of the electric Porsche Taycan, features two motors. One, the standard Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, will be fast but reasonably comfortable for street driving. The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package, though, will dispense with backseats and other comfort items to save weight.

Those more concerned with the climate crisis are asking a bigger question: what does this all mean for the planet? Gas-powered cars, hybrids and EVs all emit roughly the same amount of pollution to manufacture, until you get to producing the battery. Fully electric cars use large batteries made of materials that require heavy mining. And that would still mean less climate pollution on the road overall. And fully electric cars won’t be truly “green” until the energy that charges them comes from renewable sources, like wind and solar.

Toyota, the originator of the hybrid car craze in the early 2000s, is poised to reclaim its crown as the king of green cars. This, paired with the success of Tesla and overall investor enthusiasm for EV technology, left Toyota looking like a laggard. AdvertisementDespite years of criticism, it appears that Toyota might have had the right idea after all. Shoppers in the market for a hybrid are also much more likely to pony up more cash for these cars. Toyota has spent the last several years releasing more hybrids and plug-in hybrids, while refusing to give up on the nascent hydrogen fuel cell technology that many of its competitors have largely abandoned.

Hybrid vehicles led the 2024 top vehicle rankings released Tuesday by influential product testing organization Consumer Reports. Such "electrified" vehicles, including plug-in hybrid models, represented six of the top 10 picks by the nonprofit consumer organization. Toyota's four vehicles in the top 10 rankings were all hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles. Both hybrids and plug-in hybrids have a traditional engine combined with EV technologies. A sign is displayed outside a Toyota Motor Corp. dealership on January 30, 2024 in Tokyo, Japan. Toyota Motor raised its full-year operating profit forecast by nearly 9% on Tuesday, after its third-quarter earnings raced past analysts' estimates thanks to a weaker yen and strong sales of high-margin cars and hybrid vehicles. The Japanese firm raised its profit forecast for the current year to 4.9 trillion yen ($33 billion) from 4.5 trillion expected previously. That is well above an average analyst forecast of 4.6 trillion yen, according to LSEG data. Toyota's operating profit for the three months to Dec. 31 totalled 1.68 trillion yen, up 75.7% a year earlier and beating the average 1.3 trillion yen profit estimate in a poll of nine analysts by LSEG.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese transport officials raided a Toyota-affiliated plant Tuesday after the company admitted to cheating on engine testing, as Toyota Motor Corp. reported it sold over 11 million vehicles in 2023 to retain its status as the world’s top car manufacturer. In April, a whistleblower exposed that Daihatsu Motor Corp., which makes small cars and is 100% owned by Toyota, had been cheating on its testing for decades. In 2022, Hino Motors, a truck maker that’s also part of the Toyota group, said it had systematically falsified emissions data dating back as far as 2003. But production has been halted on some of the models, including the 10 models affected by the latest cheating. Sato has acknowledged Toyota group companies need better communication and education about the importance of complying with rules.

As Teslas and other electric vehicles dazzled car buyers with futuristic technology and dreams of a gasoline-free future, hybrid cars began to seem like yesterday’s news. Now, a slowdown in the growth of electric car sales has led General Motors, Ford Motor and Volkswagen to walk back ambitious targets for those vehicles. “Consumers want the same experience they’ve had” with a combustion engine car, said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry insights for Cox Automotive. But hybrid sales rose even faster, up 65 percent to more than 1.2 million, lifting their market share to 8 percent from 5.5 percent, according to Edmunds. Throw in plug-in hybrids, and nearly one in 10 new cars pairs a gasoline engine with electric motors to save fuel and boost performance.

Vernon, New Jersey CNN —General Motors is very clear that its engineers didn’t create the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, the first hybrid Corvette, to save gas. Instead they wanted to make an all-wheel-drive Corvette, and the best way to do that was simply to attach a powerful electric motor to the front wheels. Unlike in a Toyota Prius, or almost any other hybrid, the E-Ray’s electric motor almost never drives the car on its own. For that, GM offers the lighter and more powerful Corvette Z06, with its high-revving 670-horsepower V8 and no electric motor. Instead, GM has focused on fully electric technology and, before too long, there will be a fully electric Corvette.

Toyota Prius Prime: As Good as a Hybrid Gets

Photo: ToyotaDURING THE WEEK that I had the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime—the plug-in version of Toyota’s perennial fuel sipper—I was feeling oh so transcendent. To alert pedestrians to the approach of this often-silent hatchback, the Prius Prime generates an eerily human-sounding electronic tone, like a choir-loft of castrati, growing louder then fading away as the car picks up speed. Having lived to a biblical age, I’ve seen some crazy things. I’ve seen the Prius—whose owners were once mocked and scorned as virtue-signaling eco-weenies—become a counterargument for fossil fuel’s defenders opposing vehicle electrification.

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota is selling a part of its stake in components maker Denso to raise cash for its drive toward electric vehicles and other innovations, Japan's top automaker said Wednesday. The move is estimated to raise about 290 billion yen ($2 billion), given recent share prices. Toyota affiliates, Toyota Industries and Aisin, are also selling a portion of their Denso shares, officials said. Toyota officials have acknowledged they have fallen behind in the industry shift toward electric vehicles, and they have been aggressively playing catch-up. Toyota officials hinted other such offers may be in the works but declined to give specifics.

Hybrid vehicle market share has picked up pace in 2023 despite all the investment pouring into EVs. From October 2022 to October of this year, total vehicle market share for hybrids grew from 6.5% to 11.4%, according to data from Edmunds. Over the same time period, EV market share growth was more sluggish, expanding from 6% to 7.5%. Toyota 's 2024 Prius, often called the "gold standard" in hybrid vehicles, was named MotorTrend's car of the year. The uptick in hybrid sales won't likely spell doom and gloom for the EV market over the long-term.
