Others say they’ve also stepped in as translators for their parents during their childhood — and that these duties continue into adulthood. Monica Mikael is glad her parents are using ChatGPT, but she does have some concerns. When ChatGPT was released in November 2022, Mikael jumped at the opportunity to teach her parents how to use it. “After a month or so, they were using it entirely on their own.”Now, Mikael’s parents barely ask her for help. “And then I realized she and all my Indian aunties are using ChatGPT,” Verma said.

While expectations are high and caution is certainly warranted, we don't think it's quite that simple. While the Oscillator and Williams' work do point to possible selling pressure ahead, we don't want to get too bearish. However, we don't think the risks are so elevated as to warrant more than a small cash raise. We still view Nvidia as an "own it, don't trade it" stock, but we also don't keep our heads in the sand. NVDA YTD mountain Nvidia Wall Street is bullish heading into Nvidia's earnings results next week, figuring any hiccups to its next generation AI chips does little to dim the earnings potential of a company that essentially has a monopoly on the market. Gold prices inch lower as U.S. inflation data looms

Gold prices edged lower on Wednesday as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of a key U.S. inflation print later in the day that could set the tone for the Federal Reserve's September policy meeting. Gold prices edged lower on Wednesday as investors remained on the sidelines ahead of a key U.S. inflation print later in the day that could set the tone for the Federal Reserve's September policy meeting. Data on Tuesday showed that U.S. producer prices increased less than expected in July, reinforcing market view that cooling inflation will allow the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates soon. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said he wants to see "a little more data" before he's ready to support lowering interest rates. Gold, often used as a hedge against geopolitical risks, thrives when interest rates are low.

LONDON — European stocks are expected to open higher Wednesday as investors in the region await key inflation prints from the U.S. and U.K. U.K. inflation data out on Wednesday will be the first print since the Bank of England cut interest rates by 25 basis points last month. After two months at 2%, economists polled by Reuters expect the headline inflation rate to tick higher, to 2.3%. Money markets are currently pricing in a high probability of more interest rate cuts by the BoE, amounting to 50 basis points this year. The central bank's key rate currently sits at 5%.

U.K. inflation rose to 2.2% in July, coming in slightly below expectations but inching back above the Bank of England's 2% target, data from the Office for National Statistics showed Wednesday. The headline inflation had come in at 2% in both May and June, in line with the Bank of England's target rate. So-called core-CPI — which excludes food, energy, alcohol and tobacco prices — came in at 3.3% in July, down from the 3.5% print of July, the statistics office said. The data comes after the Bank of England earlier this month cut interest rates for the first time in over four years, taking the key bank rate to 5%. Uncertainty remains about when the central bank will cut rates again, and whether another cut will even take place this year.

On Thursday, traders get the latest reading on the state of the consumer with retail sales data for July. Hot CPI and inline retail sales (up 0.1% to 0.5%) — JPM believes that a hot CPI print and retail sales matching expectations could fuel "stagflation risks." Expect the S & P 500 to gain and Nasdaq and Russell to perform similarly. Inline CPI and cool retail sales — How much equities move in this outcome depends on the magnitude of the downside surprise in retail sales. In this scenario, traders expect a broadening in the market that includes the S & P 500 gaining.

Dollar tenses for data verdict on rate cut risks
  + stars: | 2024-08-13 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The greenback was idling at 147.17 yen , having briefly touched a one-week high of 148.23 overnight before profit-taking emerged. More important will be the consumer price report and retail sales for July which could have a material impact on whether the Fed eases by 25 basis points or 50 basis points in September. The former outcome would likely lift Treasury yields and support the dollar, while the latter would have the opposite effect. The futures market clearly still sees recession as a risk with 101 basis points of Fed easing priced in by Christmas, and more than 120 basis points for next year. "Although the trend is moderating, inflation is too high for the Fed to justify the market pricing 100bp of rate cuts between September and year-end."

LONDON — European stocks are expected to open higher Tuesday, regaining some positive momentum after last week's volatility. U.K. wage data released by the Office for National Statistics on Tuesday showed that pay excluding bonuses grew 5.4% year-on-year between April and June — the lowest rate in two years. S & P down 5.50% here, headlines of a Nikkei crash, and another great Yen carry unwind happening. I traded for a hedge fund and served as senior technical analyst for an foreign exchange company during the great financial crisis of 2008 that saw a severe yen carry unwind. If the line is headed south the dollar is weakening relative to the yen, and the yen is strengthening relative to the dollar. I believe that the July 11th CPI print that came 0.1% below expectations was the culprit to this whole yen carry unwind. Could this yen carry unwind move further?

On Monday, stocks struggled ahead of this week's inflation data, which will likely set the tone for short term market action. The S & P 500 was little changed, the Nasdaq Composite made a small advance while the Dow Jones Industrial Average pulled back about a third of a percent. The first trade is a so-called tail hedge against a hotter-than-expected CPI print, i.e. buying S & P 500 put options. The value of the put contracts will increase if the S & P 500 falls on a surprising resurgence of inflation.

The connection between business credit cards and personal creditWhen you apply for a business credit card, the process largely looks the same as getting approved for a personal credit card. Failure to make payments, as well as other delinquent behavior on a business credit card, will impact your personal credit because of this personal guarantee clause. How business card usage affects personal creditBeyond the initial hard inquiry from an application, you may be curious to know whether using a business credit card will impacts your personal credit. The same rule applies to business credit cards — and the effects of business card defaults on personal credit scores can be detrimental. As with personal credit cards, applying for multiple business credit cards can impact your personal credit score.

US stocks were lower on Monday as investors looked to new economic data due out in the week. This week, markets will get updates on consumer and producer inflation and retail sales for July. The stock market ended last week nearly flat after the biggest sell-off in over two years. On Tuesday, data on wholesale inflation will be released, though the main event for the week will be consumer inflation data on Wednesday with the consumer price index report for July. On an annual basis, inflation is expected to show prices rose 3% last month, in-line with June figures.

For example, this season started with the banks roaring higher on great numbers, legitimately great numbers led by a phenomenal Bank of America quarter. The later just made no sense because it is pulling away from Intel on the low end and if Nvidia really does have production problems then AMD is the de facto winner. In fact, the only stock that didn't suffer from an Nvidia relation, Apple, got through earnings without too much trouble. New York CNN —Paramount Global, the storied media conglomerate, announced Thursday it will lay off 15% of its US staff and write down $6 billion in value of its cable television networks as it prepares to merge with Skydance Media. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, TNT, HGTV and other cable networks, posted a $9.1 billion write down on its television business. “And this impairment acknowledges this.”The recent turbulence in the media business extends well beyond the traditional television industry, affecting digital news outlets and print publications. As profits in the television business have eroded away, Paramount has been hit particularly hard. Paramount said its streaming service Paramount+ posted a $26 million profit after losing $424 million during the same period last year and said it expects subscriber growth in the second half of the year.

The Federal Reserve is gearing up to cut interest rates as soon as next month, which could bring relief to people with mortgages, credit cards and car loans. Certificates of deposit — fixed-rate bank accounts with term limits — are a go-to when interest rates are high. With interest rates coming down, the idea is just pay and save as much as you can right now. There’s no bad time to do that, but when the central bank lowers interest rates, it can be even more valuable. “It’s tempting to say, ‘Well, when interest rates go down, stocks are going to do well, because people are switching from low-return to higher-return assets,’” she said.
