As year-end approaches, there's still time to slash your 2024 tax bill or boost your refund, financial advisors say. Typically, you can expect a tax refund when you overpay taxes throughout the year. Alternatively, you get a tax bill when you haven't paid enough. Most 2024 tax strategies must be completed by Dec. 31, so there's limited time to make last-minute moves. But there are some key strategies still available, according to financial advisors.

When Donald Trump clinched a decisive victory in the 2024 presidential election last month, Stanley Black & Decker executives knew they had a problem on their hands. The day after the Nov. 5 election, Club stock Stanley Black & Decker declined nearly 2%. Stanley Black & Decker, founded in 1843 as Stanley Works, is one of thousands of companies mulling over strategies to offset the kind of pressure that rising tariffs would present. Since labor and property are less expensive in the world's second-largest economy, big companies like Stanley Black & Decker have historically moved production there to save money. Pretax RMDs boost your adjusted gross income, which can cause higher Medicare Part B and Part D premiums, among other tax consequences, he said. Your RMD is based on your pre-tax retirement balance as of Dec. 31 from the previous year. For 2024, the calculation divides your 2023 pretax balance by an IRS life expectancy factor. The penalty falls to 10% if the RMD is "timely corrected within two years," according to the IRS. There's been a higher standard deduction since 2018, and only about 10% of taxpayers itemized tax breaks on 2021 returns, according to the most recent IRS filing data.

Grace Cary | Moment | Getty ImagesAfter decades of building your nest egg, you will eventually have to start taking required minimum distributions, or RMDs, from pretax retirement accounts. The first deadline is April 1 of the year after you turn 73, and Dec. 31 for future withdrawals. Pre-tax retirement withdrawals incur regular income taxes. Two required withdrawals in one yearIf you wait until April 1 after turning 73 to take your first RMD, you'll still owe the second one by Dec. 31. That can trigger unexpected tax consequences, according to CFP Abrin Berkemeyer, a senior financial advisor with Goodman Financial in Houston.

TJX Companies touted a "strong start" to the holiday shopping season on Wednesday, but its shares slid after the fast-growing retailer offered guidance that appeared to underwhelm Wall Street. "The fourth quarter is off to a strong start, and we are excited about our opportunities for the holiday selling season. For its holiday quarter, TJX is expecting comparable sales to grow between 2% and 3%, largely in line with the 3% uptick that StreetAccount analysts had expected. TJX is standing by its comparable sales guidance of 3% growth for the full year, just shy of the 3.2% growth that StreetAccount analysts had expected. It raised its pretax profit margin outlook from 11.2% to 11.3%, which matches StreetAccount's expectations, along with its earnings per share guidance.

Get the most out of these tax-favored accounts in 2025
  + stars: | 2024-11-20 | by ( Darla Mercado | Cfp | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Benefits enrollment season is here, and with it comes an opportunity for workers to tune up their workplace savings plans and sock away more money on a tax-favored basis. Traditional tax-deferred accounts, like 401(k) plans and individual retirement accounts, are just the beginning for savers. As tempting as it may be for savers to plow money into HSAs and other tax-favored accounts, they'll need to draw up a strategy before they do so. They can also earmark additional funds toward 529 college savings plans and taxable brokerage accounts. In a tax-deferred account, investors won't be on the hook for the tax bill until they begin drawing down from it.

Rent costs have long weighed on lower-income households — now it’s coming for the middle class. A cost-burdened household is defined as one paying 30% or more of pretax income on rent and housing costs. This figure is widely used as a threshold for affordability: the Census Bureau measures housing costs against it, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development has used it for decades. While nearly 40% of middle-class renters are burdened by costs nationwide, in Tennessee that figure is 37%, placing it among the upper half of states with the largest share of cost-burdened middle-class renters. The growing pressure on middle-class renters may finally be spurring political action.

Monitors display Coinbase signage during the company's initial public offering (IPO) at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York, on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Coinbase Wednesday reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter results, weighed down by muted trading in the cryptocurrency market. Coinbase has been an active lobbyist for the crypto industry this year, spending millions backing pro-crypto political action committees. While crypto price action has been tepid, the market cap for stablecoins reached new highs, helping push Coinbase's third-quarter stablecoin revenue to $246.9 million. That revenue could be challenged in the current quarter with interest rates expected to continue coming down.

If you're weighing a year-end Roth individual retirement account conversion, waiting too long could be risky, financial experts say. Roth conversions move pretax or nondeductible IRA funds to a Roth IRA, which can start tax-free growth. The strategy has become more popular, with a 46% year-over-year increase during the second quarter of 2024, according to Fidelity. Some investors want to pay Roth conversion taxes now while there are lower tax brackets because the current rates are scheduled to sunset after 2025 without action from Congress. However, it's difficult to predict future tax law changes with uncertain control of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Warren Buffett took full control of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a utility giant that it has owned a majority stake in since 1999, but the business has been a drag on the conglomerate. Berkshire bought the stake for $2.37 billion in cash, $600 million in debt as well as a significant amount of Berkshire Class B shares , according to a regulatory filing. Berkshire Vice Chairman Greg Abel, Buffett's designated successor, sold his 1% stake in BHE for $870 million at a much higher valuation just two years ago. The utility arm has been a weak spot for the conglomerate, which has otherwise enjoyed a few outstanding years. "BHE has been under pressure," said Cathy Seifert, Berkshire analyst at CFRA Research.
