New York CNN —A Nevada judge has ruled that billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his family can hold a secret court battle over the future of his vast media empire behind closed doors. The judge rejected a petition by a coalition of media organizations, including CNN, The New York Times, NPR, the Washington Post, Reuters and ABC, to unseal the case and allow access. Though the Murdoch family is fighting over the trust and who will ultimately have control of the family businesses after the 93-year-old’s death, all of those involved agreed to sealing the case. But beyond that, everything in this case that it scheduled to begin next week with the Murdoch family likely in attendance, will remain sealed. Preston Padden, who worked closely with Rupert Murdoch to build Fox Broadcasting in the 1990s, blasted the family’s secrecy in the case.

CNN —Three former high-ranking Fox executives are blasting Rupert Murdoch for Fox News’ role spreading disinformation in the public discourse. In a joint statement published Wednesday, the executives — Preston Padden, Ken Solomon, and Bill Reyner — expressed profound regret for their roles helping Murdoch build Fox in its early days. It’s only the latest lawsuit Fox News has faced for advancing false election conspiracy theories after Donald Trump was defeated at the ballot box in 2020. In that same month, Fox News also settled an election-related lawsuit with a Venezuelan businessman who had sued the network. Fox News is also facing another major defamation lawsuit from voting technology company Smartmatic, which is suing the network for $2.7 billion.

Rupert Murdoch said he thought Trump was going "increasingly mad" after his 2020 defeat. "The real danger is what he might do as president," Murdoch wrote of Trump, according to legal documents. Murdoch, in the new messages, said he doesn't believe Trump's election fraud claims, and predicts that Trump will eventually concede and the news agenda will shift. But Trump continued to deny the election results, and Fox News' guests and hosts continued pushing his stolen election claims to their audience. Executives in some messages expressed concern that viewers would abandon the network unless it echoed Trump's stolen election claims.
