New York CNN —The cost of a Mega Millions ticket is more than doubling, but the multi-state lottery game is promising that the bigger price comes with better odds. It’s the second time the price of a ticket has increased in Mega Millions’ 22-year history: In 2017, the price jumped from $1 to $2 — the same cost of a Powerball ticket. That’s also when Mega Millions adopted its current format of choosing six total numbers from two different pools – and when all the numbers match, including the gold Mega Ball, the player wins the jackpot. Mega Millions said that the increased ticket price will cause larger-starting jackpots, as well as faster-growing jackpots. Mega Millions is available to play in 45 states plus Washington, DC, and the US Virgin Islands.

When Roy Cockrum, a one-time struggling actor and a former monk, won a $259 million Powerball jackpot in 2014, he decided to splurge on something a bit out of the ordinary: supporting nonprofit theater. He set up a foundation that has given away $25 million to 39 American theaters so far, which is why he found himself the other night at the Old Globe in San Diego. He was there to watch the premiere of a production he supported to help the theater reach a milestone: a large-scale staging of the only Shakespeare play it had yet to produce, an adaptation of the somewhat rarely performed three “Henry VI” plays. “The question I put to artistic directors is, ‘Is there a project you’ve always dreamed of doing that you couldn’t afford?’” Cockrum, an apple-cheeked, snowy-haired 68-year-old, said in an interview. “To help artistic directors dream bigger than they would otherwise.”At a time when nonprofit theaters across the country are struggling with rising costs, fewer subscribers, smaller audiences and dwindling corporate philanthropy, Cockrum’s generosity stands out.

A few months before I won the $28 million Powerball jackpot, I had a vivid dream that I'd already won. I immediately remembered telling several people I had the winning ticket the night before. A family member explicitly told me I got something for nothing by winning the lottery and should keep giving them and others money. I also started my "Lottery, Dreams and Fortune" podcast where I interview other major prize and lottery winners.

CNN —The Powerball jackpot has skyrocketed to an estimated $1.23 billion after yet another lottery drawing yielded no grand prize winner Wednesday night. This has been one of the game’s longest streaks without a jackpot winner, according to Powerball. Since then, 40 consecutive drawings have taken place without a jackpot winner, according to Powerball. If there’s no jackpot winner on Saturday, it would tie for the most consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner. The Powerball jackpot is officially $1 billion — the fifth-largest prize in the game's history — without a winner from Saturday night's drawing. If you win the grand prize by matching all six numbers, you'll have two payout options: a lump sum of $483.8 Million or annuitized payments worth $1 billion. Both are pretax estimates. While the lump sum offers an upfront payout, the annuity includes one immediate sum followed by 29 annual payments with a 5% increase per year. The advertised jackpots aren’t nearly as big as they look. And Powerball says its current jackpot is $935 million. These lottery grand prizes are a fortune, no doubt about that. But truth be told, those mouthwatering advertised jackpot numbers aimed at tempting people to buy tickets are misleading. Thanks to the magic of rising interest rates, the advertised numbers have swelled, while the real value of the current lottery prizes isn’t even half that much.
