In a McKinsey survey in February, groceries represented the top category that Gen Z and millennial respondents said they planned to splurge on, outpacing restaurants, travel, and fitness; in 2017, Gen Xers were the top spenders on groceries, followed by boomers. In June, Bank of America reported that its Gen Z customers spent more at premium grocery stores than any other generation. The trend picked up steam with Gen Z. Millennials and Gen Zers are driving demand for vegetarian and vegan food. In a recent YouGov survey for Whole Foods, 70% of Gen Z respondents indicated they were willing to pay more for high-quality foods. New York CNN —“Mtn Dew” is getting a makeover, with the word “mountain” reappearing on cans and bottles following a roughly two-decade-long hiatus. “Mountain Dew appears ready to shake off the adrenaline rush that has defined the brand’s marketing for almost two decades, when a key strategy was to market Dew like an energy drink to an energy drink crowd,” Duane Stanford, editor and publisher of Beverage Digest, told CNN. A major change in marketing is essential for Mountain Dew. The new look for Mountain Dew is more about an “evolution and nurturing that we wanted to give to this beloved franchise,” said JP Bittencourt, vice president of marketing at Mountain Dew. “This design has been in the works for some time, so this is not a response to anybody.”A rebrand could also attract drinkers that have perhaps forgotten about Mountain Dew.

New York CNN —Coca-Cola is discontinuing the production of its new Spiced flavor just six months after the soda hit shelves, marking the end of a disappointing attempt to attract younger drinkers. “As part of this strategy, we’re planning to phase out Coca-Cola Spiced to introduce an exciting new flavor in 2025,” a spokesperson said. The short lifespan of Spiced Coke is surprising, because the company promoted it as a permanent flavor. Coca-Cola introduced Spiced Coke in February with a splashy ad campaign. Coca-Cola Spiced is a new soda that blends the “iconic taste” of Coke with a “burst of refreshing notes from raspberry and spiced flavors,” the company announced Wednesday. Coke doesn’t often add new permanent flavors to its lineup: Spiced joins just a few other flavors it always sells, including its flagship flavor, cherry and vanilla. “It appears Coca-Cola is looking to splice that trend onto its flagship with hopes of getting young consumers to consider the entire franchise,” he told CNN. Coca-Cola Spiced goes on sale February 19 in both cans and bottles in various sizes at most national retailers.

Prebiotic soda maker Olipop is set to cross $200 million in annual sales this year, just five years after it arrived on grocery store shelves. Olipop had raised $55.4 million as of Jan. 2, at a reported valuation of $199.8 million, according to Pitchbook data. Consumers are also increasingly interested in "gut health," one of the latest wellness trends.
