The boy who the police say killed Xinyue was 13 years old at the time. As his trial opens on Wednesday, it will try to answer a question gripping Chinese society: How should China deal with young children accused of heinous crimes? Countries around the world have long struggled to balance punishment and forgiveness for children. But the debate is especially notable in China, where a history of relative leniency toward young offenders stands in stark contrast to the limited rights of adult criminal defendants. For decades, the government has emphasized educating and rehabilitating juvenile offenders, rather than imprisoning them.

You could have invested a lot of money in AI chip startups several years ago. "Us going up against them is insane," said Thomas Sohmers, CEO of Positron AI, a chip startup that emerged from stealth a few months ago. TigrisOpenAI's Altman may also be working on an AI chip startup of his own. So it stands to reason that Masa has been trying to raise money for an AI chip startup.

A plan for a "mega" Chick-fil-A store in Tennessee is the latest project to encounter backlash from locals concerned about the fast-food chain's frequently crowded drive-thrus lines. In Collierville, Tennessee, Chick-fil-A has proposed replacing a 23-year-old 3,950-square-foot restaurant with a larger one to accommodate the growing consumer demand. Chain reps are billing the proposed 6,110-square-foot restaurant as the "latest greatest prototype Chick-fil-A has" in its system. Chick-fil-A said the bigger restaurant, proposed for an empty lot about a half-mile down the road, is expected to contain cars within two double drive-thru lanes that wrap the restaurant. It also has plans to build an elevated restaurant that has four drive-thru lanes that flow below the store.

An image mimicking the layout of an opinion column in The Guardian, and which is falsely attributed to British lawmaker Apsana Begum, has been shared online. However, a spokesperson for the British newspaper said it had not published such a column. The image shared (archived) on Facebook (archived) shows the fake op-ed, headlined: “Gaza will rise from the ashes to become a place of pilgrimage for the trans community. PARIS (AP) — The “Mona Lisa” has given up another secret. The oil-paint recipe that Leonardo used as his base layer to prepare the panel of poplar wood appears to have been different for the “Mona Lisa," with its own distinctive chemical signature, the team of scientists and art historians in France and Britain discovered. Gonzalez has studied the chemical compositions of dozens of works by Leonardo, Rembrandt and other artists. People unfamiliar with the idea of a racial map may have been surprised by Black responses to Jason Aldean’s country song “Try That in a Small Town,” which became a hit this summer. I wonder how often vigilante groups were formed to protect Black Southerners from harm rather than inflict it upon them. According to Mr. Aldean, it is simply about the traditional values of small-town America. Do we discover it during the first centuries of the Republic when slavery was the law of the land? The small-town song, in the end, is about a return to a glorious past that existed only for some.

As well as flammable invasive plants sparking and spreading wildfires, climate change is enabling invasive species to move north – even to remote areas such as high mountains, deserts and frozen tundra. Preventing the arrival of new species into new regions is the best way to manage threats from invasive species, according to the report. For invasive species that have already taken hold, eradication has been a useful tool, especially on islands, according to the report.

Americans are increasingly leaving big cities in states like California for affordable enclaves. Indiana towns are offering cash and other incentives for those willing to leave city life behind. One family shared with The Los Angeles Times the perks they cashed in on in Indiana. Other perks include coffee with the town's mayor Chris Jensen and memberships to a golf club and co-working space. Outsized pollution and noise from devices like gas-powered leaf blowers are driving the efforts. The gas-to-electric transition at the neoclassical landmark, which has stood for more than two centuries in Georgetown, came ahead of a ban on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers that went into effect in the nation's capital last year. California next year will ban the sale of new gas-powered leaf blowers and lawn mowers, among other equipment, though the state will still allow existing devices to be used. That's in part because about 30% of the oil-and-gas mix that powers so-called two-stroke engines, which often run tools like leaf blowers and string trimmers, isn't burned. Whalley was already a proponent of ditching the gas-powered tools because she'd done so at her own home.

A Dutch Quest for Buried Nazi Treasure Comes Up Empty

A couple of weeks before the end of the war, five German soldiers buried the treasure, but another, Helmut Sonder, watched them while lying in the bushes with a war injury. He drew a map from memory, presumably with the idea of coming back for the spoils, according to the documents. The map suggested a degree of precision — the treasure, it said, was buried about 1.7 to 2.3 feet deep, next to three poplar trees. The Buren municipality, which includes Ommeren, turned away several requests for similar endeavors, according to Pieter Neven, an official there. Ms. Honders’s foray was approved, he said, because “We wanted to handle it professionally.”Mr. Neven said that the municipality had subsidized Ms. Honders’s search with 2,000 euros, about $2,200, to help pay for the archaeologists and professional metal-detector operators.
A viral clip online likely shows the catkins, or flower spikes, of poplar trees covering cars in northern China, not a “rain of worms” as social media posts and some news reports have claimed, experts told Reuters. One tweet saying: “China citizens told to find shelter after it looked like it started to rain worms” has been viewed more than 18 million times at the time of writing (here). There can be thousands of poplar catkins per tree, Claire Thomas Federici, a botanist and plant geneticist at the University of California, Riverside (here), said by email. China has a “distinctively rich” variety of trees in the poplar family, particularly in northern China, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (here), (here). Experts say the video from China likely shows catkins from poplar trees instead of a “rain” of worms or caterpillars.
PHOENIX, Feb 9 (Reuters) - As celebrities descended on Phoenix this week ahead of Super Bowl 57, a brand new A-lister emerged that few had heard of before: Donna Kelce. But first she is going through the Super Bowl's exhaustive news cycle, dressed in her now-famous combination Eagles-Chiefs jersey. "You can't tell my mom anything right now - she's an absolute superstar," said Travis Kelce, 33, the eight-time Pro Bowler who helped the Chiefs hoist the Lombardi Trophy three years ago. More than 180,000 signatures were signed to a Change.org petition as of Wednesday evening, demanding that Donna be allowed to make the coin toss on Super Bowl Sunday, and she signed a promotional deal with KIND Snacks. Donna has likened seeing her two sons in the Super Bowl to winning the lottery, with a career in professional sports a wild gamble for even the most gifted athlete.

Climate startup Living Carbon has developed trees that grow faster to ultimately store more CO2. Carbon removal typically sits in two buckets: engineered – or technological – removal and nature-based removal. Living Carbon, founded in 2019, reported its engineered trees grow 50% faster and soak up 27% more carbon than traditional trees. Living Carbon is also running its own carbon removal projects and is currently partnering with landowners in Pennsylvania and Georgia, who get a percentage of the carbon credits generated from the projects.
