But its successful new Kursk offensive has done more than seize 480 square miles of Russian territory and humiliate Putin. After nearly a year of a grim defensive battle, the Kursk operation has also allowed Ukraine to seize the initiative and force Moscow to dance to Kyiv's tune. The Russians no longer hold the initiative across the entirety of the theater, like they have for most of last year." The incidents come one day after a drone attack on Moscow, for which Russia has blamed Ukraine. Kyiv has not yet commented on the drone attack or on Wednesday’s incidents in Belgorod and Krasnodar. Russian authorities made Ukrainians living in occupied towns evacuate or sign liability waivers. If anyone refused to evacuate, they had to sign papers saying Russia wasn't responsible for them. Citizens told The New York Times that Russia forced evacuations ahead of a Ukrainian counterattack. But only a small number of people are actually following the orders, Ukrainian citizens told the Times. Insider previously reported that Russian authorities were forcing Ukrainians in occupied areas to either get a Russian passport or be "deported" and have their property seized.

The defenses continue for hundreds of miles across the meandering southern front – where Ukrainian forces are expected to concentrate their counter-offensive in the coming weeks. This area will be critical should Ukrainian forces try to advance towards the city of Melitopol and split Russian forces in the south. It’s unclear where the equipment went but likely that it was sent north to reinforce Russian defensive lines. Russian-appointed officials in Zaporizhzhia claim there is already a large build-up of Ukrainian forces in the area. Ukrainian officials do not disclose the movement of units.

And in the case of Polohy, Russia has constructed two distinct defensive lines, one to the north and one to the south.
