Dani’s Queer Bar opened its doors to Boston’s LGBTQ community last month, giving the city its first lesbian bar in decades. The venue joins a yearslong “lesbian bar renaissance” that has seen more than a dozen bars for queer women open across the country since the height of the Covid pandemic. After delays caused by permitting issues, Dani’s Queer Bar — reportedly named after Rocha’s American Eskimo pup — finally opened Sept. 12. Stars from Hollywood's golden age are being reborn through celebrity estate AI voice cloning deals, a sign of how some of the "Wild West" concerns about unauthorized AI impersonation are being addressed by new business models. Safeguards include active moderation of content, accountability enforceable with bans, and special provisions for safeguarding the impact of AI voice on the 2024 election. Among the current generation of actors, there remains significant anxiety surrounding the use of AI in generating voice content. Voice actors for video games have raised concerns, and last year's film and television strike had significant roots in anxieties over the use of AI. AI voice licensing could alleviate workload for voice actors, he added, without supplanting them, as they "intercede in the process by focusing on offering correction or enhancement to ineffable aspects such as intonation, warmth, and emphasis, which still present challenges."

Mary Cassatt’s Women Didn’t Sit Pretty
  + stars: | 2024-05-16 | by ( Deborah Solomon | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the epic story of modern art, Mary Cassatt has been cast as the premier painter of mothers and babies. Yet she created a world in which no one ever changed a diaper or ran out of milk. For decades she was dismissed as a paintbrush-wielding patrician unconnected to the make-it-new spirit of modern art. Yet at least since 1998, when the British feminist Griselda Pollock published the book “Mary Cassatt: Painter of Modern Women,” Cassatt has been rehabilitated as a proto-feminist who supported women’s suffrage and experimented daringly in her work. The approaching centennial of Cassatt’s death is inspiring a new round of exhibitions and books, and a reappraisal is welcome.

Breaded shrimp contained the most tiny plastics by far, at well over an average of 300 microplastic pieces per serving. Plastics are everywhereThere are a staggering number of plastics in the world, today, according to a recent analysis — 16,000 plastic chemicals, with at least 4,200 of those considered to be “highly hazardous” to human health and the environment. (The authors declined to mention which brands of bottled water they studied.) Prior research using older technology had identified only about 300 nanoplastics in bottled water, along with bigger microplastics. · If you can, eat as much fresh food as possible, and limit purchase of processed and ultraprocessed foods wrapped in plastic.

When Richard Serra died yesterday, I flashed back nearly 30 years to a morning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, looking with him and with his wife, the German-born art historian Clara Weyergraf, at Jackson Pollock’s splash and drip painting from 1950, “Autumn Rhythm.”We had decided to meet as soon as the museum opened, when the gallery, at the far end of the Met, would still be empty. Taking in the painting, Serra had the air of a caged lion, pacing back and forth, moving away, to see it whole, then back in to inspect some detail. “We evaluate artists by how much they are able to rid themselves of convention, to change history,” he said. For him, art was all or nothing. Of course he wasn’t alone in his thinking among American artists of his generation, the offspring of postwar American power and arrogance, of titans like Pollock.

Experts and vaccine makers can agree that low Covid vaccination rates are concerning, even as cases of the virus dwindle from their pandemic highs. However, Iovine of the University of Florida doesn't believe combination shots will have a significant effect on Covid vaccination rates. If combination shots don't do the trick, it's unclear what else could boost Covid vaccination rates down the line.

Resumes are often integral to job applications, but as skills-based hiring is on the rise, could they become obsolete? Resumes of the futureOne thing is clear to experts: Resumes of the future will look nothing like they do now. CNN —A previously unseen painting by Claude Monet is expected to fetch more than $65 million when it goes on sale in New York early next month, according to a statement released by Christie’s auction house. Entitled “Le bassin aux nymphéas” or “Water lily pond,” the two-meter- (6.6-foot-) wide painting forms part of Monet’s famous “Water Lilies” series, depicting light dappling across the water, casting reflections of water lilies and willow trees. Painted around 1917-1919, it dates from the latter period of Monet’s life, as he produced a series of works depicting water lilies that now hang in museums worldwide. Significant Monet paintings have previously fetched eye-watering sums of money at auction. Another in the “Water Lilies” series sold for $84.7 million at Christie’s in May 2018, while a painting from the “Haystacks” series sold for $110.7 million at Sotheby’s a year later.

“Is It Good Enough to Fool My Gallerist?” David Salle, one of America’s most thoughtful painters, hoped an A.I. “We are sending the machine to art school,” Salle quipped, before expounding on the principles of light, shadow, depth and volume that good painting requires. Safe to say that nobody would mistake this image for a Salle painting. Salle’s style has changed over the years, which made capturing his essence a little more challenging for an algorithm. Put through the blender of a machine, Salle’s art becomes a remix: a pastiche of pastiches.

Before that, Koizumi, 35, studied sculpture, painting and drawing at Chiba University, in the suburb where he grew up, hoping to become a children’s art teacher. Last summer, the gallerist Yukiko Mizutani heard him talk about his background on television and sought out the designer, one of fashion’s rising talents, to tell him that he should try being a visual artist himself. “And oil paint stinks.”) He’s spent six months creating 30 or so pieces; his first solo show will be held there this December. Most are constructed using leftover fabric, which he sews into small or wall-filling rectangles, then smears with layer upon layer of oil and acrylic paint, which collects like alien goo within the folds of the ruffles. The artist initially used brushes, but it took too long — the crenulated surfaces are a few inches deep — so now, like Jackson Pollock, he uses his hands.

The Angels led 3-2 going into the ninth, thanks in part to a home run-robbing catch by center fielder Mickey Moniak in the eighth inning. Luis Rengifo followed with a single off Giants reliever Tyler Rogers (6-4), scoring Grichuk for a 3-2 Los Angeles lead. The starting pitchers -- the Angels' Patrick Sandoval and the Giants' Logan Webb -- matched each other with three scoreless innings to start the game before the Giants broke through in the fourth.

Among those inspired by the solitude and natural wonder they found there were the playwrights Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams, painters Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, novelists Jack Kerouac and Norman Mailer and poets E.E. “A grand place to be alone and undisturbed,” O’Neill once said of his hideaway there. “I’m ashamed that the Park Service would try to capitalize on it, without realizing the point of the shacks was to get away from civilization, from capitalism.”The Park Service set no limit on financial offers from bidders. The structures’ use must be private and residential, not commercial; modern upgrades are not allowed, and lease holders will bear the full costs of their upkeep. The agency declined to say how many bids were submitted by the July deadline, or when it will notify the winners.

Regardless of that shift, experts say vaccine uptake may not look much different from that of the bivalent boosters. Pandemic fatigue, confusionFatigue over the pandemic and the general belief that Covid is "over" could potentially hinder the uptake of new shots this fall, experts said. Ipsos and Axios released a survey with similar findings in May, the same month the U.S. ended the national Covid public health emergency amid a downward trend in cases, hospitalizations and deaths. "That contrasts with what we've seen in the past where there are different vaccines, different timing, different age groups and something new to consider every few months." Advisors to the FDA have raised concerns about shifting to yearly Covid vaccines, noting that it's unclear if the virus is seasonal like the flu.

In “The Slip,” Prudence Peiffer’s tenderly researched group biography, six visual artists in different seasons of life and seeking different aesthetic ideals met Barr’s challenge with an unlikely spirit of concert. Beside him is his art school friend Jack Youngerman, painter of shaggy color fields in organic, almost floral forms. Grown bored in postwar Paris, the Jersey boy and the Kentuckian relocated to the abandoned sail-making lofts of Coenties Slip, an old manufacturing block in the toe of Manhattan. From 1956 to around 1964, an artist colony and some truly epochal art took shape there. That scene has long fascinated critics but never been the subject of a researched narrative history until now.

AI would soon be better than human artists, Beverly was told. In October, Beverly checked a website, HaveIBeenTrained.com, that reveals if an artwork or photo was used to teach AI models. That image can still be fed to AI learning models, but the data gleaned from it would be inaccurate, Zhao told Insider. His team conceptualized the program when they were contacted by artists worried that AI models were specifically targeting their personal work. That could theoretically lead to a pseudo-arms race, where AI companies and the Glaze team continually try to one-up each other.

An alarm at the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, N.Y., blared at about 2 a.m. on a fall morning in 2015, prompting its director to drive to the building and learn that culprits had broken in and stolen six championship belts from the ’40s and ’50s. “Who could do this to a hall of fame museum?” Edward Brophy asked police officers. Blood from one of the thieves appeared to drip from the splintered glass of a window they had broken in through. For something equally lovable but a bit less hands-on, try Eric Kim’s ritzy Cheddar chicken breasts. They rely on Ritz crackers and are baked in the oven, which means no Jackson Pollock oil splatters to clean up. Speaking of vegetarians: Priya Krishna calls vegetable pulao “a weeknight staple in many Desi households” because it’s wildly flexible. Not only is it less messy, but I find it’s easier to get an even thickness when the slippery meat is neatly contained. You can do this in advance, then roll or fold up the sheets — meat included — and store in the fridge until you’re ready to bread and fry.
