The House Ethics Committee on Monday revealed it found "substantial evidence" that former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl in 2017, and that he "regularly" paid women for sex while he was in Congress. Gaetz also accepted gifts, including a 2018 trip to the Bahamas, "in excess of permissible amounts," the bipartisan committee concluded. "Representative Gaetz has acted in a manner that reflects discreditably upon the House," the report said. But the Ethics Committee, which had paused its own efforts while the DOJ's version played out, reauthorized its investigation in May 2023. News outlets reported at the time that Gaetz's departure came just two days before the Ethics panel was set to vote to release the report.

CNN —This has been a blockbuster election year politically, so it’s fitting that a new movie shines a light on an ancient and highly secretive voting process: the selection of a new pope. Brían F. O'Byrne as Cardinal O'Malley (L) and Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence (R) in the movie "Conclave." They cast them in the Sistine Chapel, in front of the awe-inspiring sight of Michelangelo’s “Last Judgment,” writing their choices on paper ballots that are then burnt after being counted. The crowd waiting outside is informed that a pope has been elected when the chimney above the Sistine Chapel billows out white smoke. White smoke emerged from the chimney on the Sistine Chapel when a new pope was elected on March 13, 2013.

But major cracks appeared in January, when Rodrigo Duterte called Marcos a “drug addict” and threatened that the president could be removed from power. The U.S. Federal Reserve won't cut interest rates as much as markets expect because "embedded inflation" is too high, Blackrock CEO Larry Fink said Tuesday, speaking at a CEO-studded panel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Biden administration's legislation, such as the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, have pushed those efforts forward. "Today, I think we have governmental policies that are embedded inflationary, and, with that being said, we're not gonna see interest rates as low as people are forecasting," Fink said. The Fed cut its benchmark rate by 50 basis points in September, signaling a turning point in its management of the U.S. economy and in its outlook for inflation. In late-September reports, strategists at J.P. Morgan and Fitch Ratings predicted two additional interest rate cuts by the end of 2024, and expect such reductions to continue into 2025.

At risk of collapsing before the year is out, the new lineup will have to do a delicate dance with the far right in order to survive. By pandering to the right, Macron hopes his government can safeguard his legacy after the left pledged to repeal some of his key policies, such as controversial pension reforms. New faces include veteran conservative Bruno Retailleau at the interior ministry whose hardline stance on immigration appeals to the far right. The president – a former left-wing minister – is now beholden to the support of the far right. Core inflation, to which the Fed pays more attention because it more accurately reflects price movements, came in a bit higher than expected for the month. Core inflation was higher than the headline number because food and energy prices are stripped out from the former.

President Biden will intensify efforts on Tuesday to court Black and Latino voters, using a two-day swing through the crucial battleground state of Nevada to try to return to the campaign that might have been. As he resumes politicking after a pause following the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump this weekend, the president plans to focus on core issues like the economy and lowering housing costs, an attempt to reset the conversation after an extraordinary three weeks that has also included a dismal debate performance and calls from panicked Democrats to withdraw from the race. The trip will also provide Mr. Biden an opportunity to try to draw attention away from Republicans, who polls show are making gains with Black and Hispanic voters and are holding their national convention in Wisconsin this week, as he sells his vision for a second term. On Tuesday, Mr. Biden is set to speak at the annual convention for the N.A.A.C.P., be interviewed by Black Entertainment Television and participate in an economic summit with Representative Steven Horsford of Nevada, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. On Wednesday, he will speak before UnidosUS, a Hispanic civil rights and advocacy group.

Hospitals are overstretched as Palestinians die in Israeli attacks on the suburbs and tens of thousands of people have already fled. For Netanyahu, the eradication of the group that carried out the October 7 attacks may be a matter of political survival. • Can Israel — as Netanyahu vows — go ahead alone in an operation even the US has disowned? • How would a full-scale offensive in Rafah further hamper already faltering attempts to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas? CNN —Former President Donald Trump will make his foray back onto the campaign trail Wednesday for the first time since his New York criminal hush money trial began in earnest last month. Trump advisers see openings with critical working class voters unhappy with inflation, and with Arab American voters who disprove of Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war. But they are still in the early stages of building out the teams, according two senior Trump campaign advisers, which they say will be a mix of paid staffers and volunteers. “That’s a colossal disaster for him,” one of the senior Trump advisers said, and it is something they plan to message on aggressively in the months ahead. Recent campaign filings with the Federal Election Commission show Biden’s principal campaign committee entered April with $85.5 million, while Trump’s main campaign account had $45.1 million in its war chest.

Cohen and Daniels are both key witnesses against Trump in his ongoing New York state criminal trial. Trump is accused of falsifying business records to cover-up the $130,000 payment that Daniels received so she wouldn’t publicly reveal their alleged affair before the 2016 election. Cohen hired veteran attorney Justin Nelson after OAN published the story last month. CNN —Voting technology company Smartmatic and the far-right network One America News said Tuesday that they had settled a defamation lawsuit stemming from the outlet’s lies about the 2020 election. “The case has been resolved pursuant to a confidential agreement,” OAN attorney Chip Babcock told CNN. The case against OAN was one of a spate of lawsuits filed against right-wing outlets in the aftermath of the election. In the wake of the 2020 presidential contest, pro-Donald Trump outlets spread lies wrongfully suggesting President Joe Biden had not been legitimately elected president. OAN settled a defamation suit in September with former Dominion executive Eric Coomer, whose case revealed how the network worked with former Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell and others to lie about the election.

First, the conventions of the criminal trial – like those in thousands of courtrooms every day – mean this case will grind on relentlessly. In previous civil trials, Trump challenged the dignity of the rule of the court and feuded with other judges. But potential jurors appeared to take their obligation deeply seriously. But other potential jurors said they’d be able to put any political feelings about Trump to one side and focus on the evidence and the law. And in another revealing trend that hinted at the ex-president’s political appeal, some potential jurors mentioned that they viewed his rhetorical eruptions as those of someone who speaks his mind, unlike conventional politicians.

This is the way political parties throughout most of American history have picked their nominees for president. But it’s a funny kind of suggestion, because it is somehow simultaneously novel and ancient. So what I wanted to do today was talk through how conventions work — how an open convention works, what kind of politicking happens at it, what kinds of candidates win, how they win and also talk through what would happen this year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is going small to try to win big in November. Biden’s campaign taped the visit, which was closed to reporters, and later released curated snippets online. “You have to go to the places where people are,” said Biden deputy campaign manager Rob Flaherty. Biden aides say their goal is for the president — or those he's meeting with — to amplify the president's message too. “I would rather have 100 outside voices saying Joe Biden is great than one piece of content from us saying Joe Biden is great,” he said.

Baseless 2020 smearsSmartmatic has sued OAN, Powell, and other Trump allies and right-wing outlets, seeking billions of dollars in damages for their 2020 election lies.
