BRENTWOOD, Calif. — A Northern California city has agreed to pay nearly $1 million to settle a lawsuit alleging police used excessive force after a K-9 dog bit into a woman’s scalp during her arrest, requiring her to get more than 200 stitches and other treatment. Talmika Bates will receive $967,000 from the city of Brentwood, located about 60 miles east of San Francisco in Contra Costa County, her attorneys announced Friday. The woman required more than 200 stitches in her head, tissue rearrangement and laceration repair. Brentwood Police Chief Timothy Herbert said the city and its insurance providers agreed to settle the case to avoid further litigation and appeal costs. “The lone claim by Ms. Bates in this litigation was excessive force per the Fourth Amendment.

Miller was a powerful White House aide in Trump’s first term, authoring much of his most fiery scripted rhetoric as a speechwriter. Yet despite these draconian visions, there’s uncertainty about how far Trump will go in his deportation program and whether it matches his dystopian speeches. Many Democrats and Republicans could agree on Trump’s vow to start by deporting criminal undocumented migrants — the easiest part of his plan. Trump’s critics and vulnerable undocumented migrants, however, will find little in the president-elect’s new staff picks to offer them comfort. In every incoming presidential administration, staffing is important and provides ideological clues to how a White House will act.

Welcome to the NBA, Bronny James. With the age-defying act of LeBron James now reaching a 22nd season, tying the league record for longest career with Vince Carter, James has played for so long that in June the Lakers drafted his oldest son, Bronny, 20. Though Lakers coach J.J.
