Corporate leaders can't "bulls---" their employees about the impact of artificial intelligence on the workforce and the ways in which the technology will affect jobs more broadly, according to one tech billionaire. "If I could give any advice, it's that everybody should be a student of AI and tech and not be afraid of it." Even though it's a given AI will impact the workforce, "none of us have it all completely figured out," he said. "If anybody comes in and tells you, 'I can tell you exactly how this is going to impact jobs and how it's going to impact everything we're doing,' they're lying. Read previewMattel CEO Ynon Kreiz is trying to transform the toy maker into an entertainment company — but don't look for it to be a funder or distributor in its own right. After 2023's smash success of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," Kreiz has become one of the most intriguing figures in Hollywood. Kreiz spoke with Business Insider on Wednesday about lessons from Barbie and how he's turning Mattel into an IP company. At a time of massive disruption in entertainment, Kreiz thinks Mattel is well-positioned. But "Barbie" established a blueprint for Mattel's future projects in working with top creatives, providing promotion power, and staying true to its brands, Kreiz said.

GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has called for Republicans to shut down the government if they can’t pass the voting measure known as the SAVE Act. Many Democrats are pushing for an extension into December that would not include the SAVE Act, which is viewed as a non-starter in the Senate. “House Republicans don’t seem to have any plan for actually keeping the government open, so the Senate will step in,” Schumer said in floor remarks. “Many Republican House members, as many of you have reported, are smart enough to know if there is a shutdown, it will be a Republican shutdown. There never is a shutdown — hardly ever is a shutdown,” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois.

CNN —Donald Trump’s obsession with election fraud that doesn’t exist in any significant form could drive the country into a government shutdown — and may even put the Republican House majority at risk. But given the tiny House GOP majority and Trump’s looming presence, every step the speaker takes will be perilous – especially if he hopes to cling to his job if Republicans succeed in holding the House in November. Trump seems to be setting the GOP up for an intra-party fight that could turn into a disaster in November. Many companies don't have cyber insurance because of costs, but the market is growing. Cyber insurance can help companies recover financially from cyberattacks and data breaches. But one way leaders can minimize the impact of losses from a cybersecurity incident is by getting cyber insurance. One reason is the cost: The Cyber Readiness Institute estimates that cyber insurance can cost businesses $500 to $5,000 a year. What cyber insurance does and doesn't coverMany policies offer first- and third-party coverage, and most companies need both, Engstrom said.

Harris responded that she’d cap child care costs at 7% of working families’ income, following the Biden administration playbook that she was heavily involved in writing. “My plan is that no family, no working family, should pay more than 7% of their household income in child care,” Harris said Tuesday at a National Association of Black Journalists event, noting that steep child care expenses make it difficult for many parents to work. Child care advocates were buoyed by Harris’ answer on Tuesday. Parents with two kids in a child care center paid on average at least twice as much for that care as they did for the typical rent in 11 states and the District of Columbia in 2023, according to a Child Care Aware of America report released in May. That equates to 10% of median household income for a married couple with children and 32% of median income for a single parent with children, Child Care Aware found.

Washington CNN —The House failed on Wednesday to pass a six-month GOP government funding plan that included a controversial measure targeting noncitizen voting, an effort pushed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The House vote was 202 to 220, with 14 Republicans voting against it, two Republicans voting present and three Democrats voting for it. Johnson would not reveal on Wednesday ahead of the planned vote what he would do if the GOP government funding plan fails and said he has spoken to Trump “a lot” about government funding after the former president floated a government shutdown. Trump had previously said that if Republicans don’t receive “absolute assurances” about election security, they should not pass a funding extension. The six-month funding plan from House Republicans would have extended government funding until March 2025.

PHILADELPHIA — Vice President Kamala Harris will take questions from three members of the National Association of Black Journalists on Tuesday, six weeks after former President Donald Trump questioned her ethnicity and clashed with a journalist at the organization’s national convention in Chicago. But it is not an official campaign event, and it is open only to select NABJ members and 100 students from historically Black colleges and universities. “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said, drawing gasps. “NABJ does not endorse political candidates as a journalism organization,” NABJ President Ken Lemon said in a statement last week. The interview with Vice President Harris is designed to inform the public and give our members access to help inform their reporting.

Amazon abandoned its $1.7 billion purchase of iRobot in January after the FTC and European regulators raised concerns. Before the company announced its $27 billion purchase of data analytics software company Splunk last September, he said he viewed the risk as absolutely worth taking. Alphabet's last big deal was its $5.4 billion purchase of cybersecurity company Mandiant in 2022. At Balyasny, Goodwin will effectively have his own unit, though he'll be under the flagship Atlas Enhanced umbrella and operate on BAM's platform, including access to its technology, risk management, hiring, and human resources capabilities. Companies can face data-security challenges with cloud storage and access management. Dan Benjamin, the senior director of product management at Prisma Cloud, a cloud-security platform made by Palo Alto Networks, said that incorporating data-security posture management into cybersecurity strategies could help solve many of these problems. This is crucial, as an IBM report published in 2023 estimated that 82% of data breaches involved data stored in the cloud. Organizations also often use several cloud systems and sometimes lack a solid security strategy for maintaining, updating, and securing data. Liat Hayun, the vice president of product management and research of cloud security at the cybersecurity company Tenable, said cloud environments' flexibility makes them attractive to companies.

A new report commissioned by a labor-backed group is examining a problem many Democrats might rather ignore: the exodus of working-class voters from the party they used to call home. Some voices on the left have downplayed the significance or even denied the loss of working class voters, but the data is increasingly clear and signs of realignment are everywhere. “We take the right wing and Republican Party seriously when they say they want to be the party of the working class,” Mitchell said. Too often, the report argues, working-class voters are thought of as white men without college degrees, likely involved in a trade like plumbing. If nothing else, Mitchell hopes the research will push Democrats to take seriously the erosion with working class voters and to move beyond one-size-fits all stereotypes when thinking about how to talk to working-class voters.

Faster delivery is prompting more and more people to turn to Amazon to buy paper towels and other everyday items. The growing prevalence of one- and same-day delivery has made Amazon a much more convenient to place to shop for everyday essentials. "If people buy everyday essentials on Amazon, they're more likely to buy other products too," said Jeff Marks, the Club's director of portfolio analysis. This added convenience in ordering everyday essentials from Amazon comes at a challenging time for physical retailers known for selling those same products. The company likes "to be in the consideration set for consumers" in the everyday essentials since it helps drive market share gains, Olsavsky said.

CNN —There’s no political playbook for how to deal with another apparent assassination attempt against a major-party presidential candidate within weeks of an election. The second apparent assassination attempt comes against the backdrop of a turbulent campaign that has defied convention and predictions. Another apparent attempt on his life is likely to have some level of personal impact on the former president. In normal circumstances, an apparent assassination attempt against a presidential candidate might be expected to unleash a surge of sympathy that could translate into a political boost. But it’s too early to say whether the second apparent assassination attempt will have greater political impact than the first.
