Luzerne County is one of many counties in Pennsylvania — and across the country — that shifted to the right this year. Kevin Kraynak, a Luzerne County native, traveled from his home in California to try to get out the vote. Luzerne County became a hotbed of election denialism in 2020, and Pennsylvania is an open-carry state. Just over 152,000 total ballots were cast in Luzerne County — about the same as in 2020. In only one other Pennsylvania county were Trump’s gains greater.

“This is a critical time of year, the time when most retailers make a lot of their money,” Schade said. Three companies — Ulta Beauty, IKEA and Whole Foods Market — received a B grade, while 26 companies were equally split between C and D grades. “We also grade companies on whether the changes requested from their suppliers are actually implemented, if they have truly ‘banned the bad,’ so to speak,” Peele said. Key ports on Canada's West Coast, including its largest container port in Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert, were shut down by a labor strike on Monday. According to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, $800 million in trade flows through West Coast ports every day. Montreal processes 40% of all East Coast container traffic. Approximately $572 million in container trade arrives daily in the U.S. from Canada, according to U.S. Census data. A temporary loss of the Canadian West Coast trade gateway could push carriers to discharge import cargo along the already strained U.S. West Coast, said Alan Baer, CEO of OL USA, further increasing the dwell time of containers and elongating overall transits.

ERWIN, Tenn. — Rescue workers in Tennessee said Friday they have recovered the body of the final person still missing after massive flooding from Hurricane Helene hit a plastics factory there. Rosa Andrade, 29, was one of six employees killed after they were unable to escape the rising waters around Impact Plastics in Erwin, a small town in East Tennessee. Normally running 2 feet deep, the river rose to a record 30 feet that day, with more than 1.4 million gallonso of water running downstream each second — twice as much as Niagara Falls. Relatives of some of those who were killed have sued Impact Plastics and its owner, Gerald O’Connor. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the allegations involving Impact Plastics at the direction of the local prosecutor.

CNN —For the first time, scientists have found evidence that marine mammals could be inhaling microplastics, according to new research that detected the potentially harmful particles in the breath of bottlenose dolphins off the coasts of Louisiana and Florida. Previous research has discovered the tiny particles present in marine mammals’ tissues from exposure through consumption and then movement from the digestive tract into other organs. “We found that dolphins may be breathing in microplastics, even if they live in rural areas away from high levels of human activity. The researchers are unsure how inhalation of microplastics will affect dolphins, but they suspect it could have an impact on the creatures’ lung health, according to the study. The study team held up petri dishes to the mammals’ blowhole, through which dolphins inhale and exhale.

Tan, who works on materials for soft electronics and soft robotics, says that Yale’s robot is the first self-amputating, self-reconfigurable soft robot she’s seen. “What if a soft robot is just minding its own business walking in the wild, but then some part of it is trapped under a rock?” he questioned. “How does the rest of the robot continue on to finish its mission?”Three soft robot modules join to cross a gap that’s too wide for one to bridge on its own. “We can now adapt soft robots … after the robot is underway for its tasks,” he said.

The dockworkers' strike threatens supply chains, while Hurricane Helene caused costly damage. Devastation from Hurricane Helene, a dockworkers' strike, and escalating conflict in the Middle East all threaten to scramble supply chains and inflate prices. How much the strike impacts prices depends on how much of a cushion companies have built to deal with any bottlenecks. Bottlenecks also encourage carriers to raise their prices, increasing retail and consumer goods prices, Kent said. The hurricane has also disrupted some supply chains, including healthcare supplies and high-purity quartz needed for semiconductor manufacturing.
