If you've been putting off choosing your coverage for the upcoming year during this open enrollment season, no one would blame you. Workers often find themselves choosing an insurance plan from a menu of complicated and pricey options. If you've been procrastinating during open enrollment, here are three simple steps to just get it done. Know your acronymsYour workplace will likely present you with a list of insurance plans to choose from, which generally fall into one of two categories: high-deductible health plans and co-pay plans. Co-pay plans Unlike high-deductible plans, co-pay plans come with pre-determined costs that you'll pay for things like office visits, prescription drugs and medical procedures.

Trump's plan to transform federal land into housing will be costly, given minimal existing infrastructure, UBS says. Those policies, plus a set of potentially inflationary proposals, could drive up both home prices and mortgage rates, they say. Trump's plan to transform federal land into more housing seems particularly challenged, the analysts say. The higher rates will likely continue the housing lock-in effect, where existing homeowners prefer to remain locked in at their current lower rates. In prepared remarks on Thursday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the US is in no hurry to cut rates, signaling that mortgage rates could stay higher for longer.

Related storiesA 2022 George W. Bush Institute study found that US metros with the highest immigrant population growth scored the lowest construction costs. Without the supply of these workers, history suggests housing costs are likely to rise. These could be significant, given that the construction industry would be competing against other immigrant-dependent sectors. Trump's campaign has implied that cracking down on immigration will help ease housing unaffordability by effectively removing one source of demand. Meanwhile, Trump's platform is also pushing another policy initiative that's unlikely to help housing costs: tariffs.

On Thursday, China unveiled new measures to prop up its struggling property market. AdvertisementChina officials have directed a wave of stimulus measures at the country's beleaguered property market, but the effort hasn't done much to impress Wall Street experts. On Thursday, China unveiled new measures to prop up its flailing housing market, including quicker access to credit for developers and renovations in run-down urban areas. "While a step in the right direction, these stimulus measures are so far falling short of the scope and scale needed to reflate the Chinese economy. Alistair Berg | Digitalvision | Getty ImagesThe Biden administration's new affordable repayment plan, known as SAVE, may be on hold for months —or longer — amid a slew of legal challenges. The White House says roughly 8 million people are enrolled in SAVE, or the Saving on a Valuable Education plan. Why the SAVE plan is on holdThe SAVE plan has been a magnet for controversy ever since the Biden administration rolled out the program in the summer of 2023, describing it as "the most affordable student loan plan ever." Indeed, the terms of the new income-driven repayment plan are the most generous to date. However, borrowers pursuing student loan forgiveness should still explore their options, said Elaine Rubin, director of corporate communications at Edvisors, which helps students navigate college costs and borrowing.

Federal student loan borrowers on the SAVE plan were expecting or already enjoying lower monthly payments from July onward, and others were hoping to see their loans forgiven after a decade of payments. The temporary stay blocks all aspects of the SAVE plan from moving forward until further notice. If you're already enrolled in the SAVE plan, you'll be placed in an interest-free forbearance while the administration "continues to vigorously defend the SAVE Plan in court," the statement said. The 8th Circuit ruling addresses just one of the two lawsuits currently being litigated to determine the SAVE plan's fate. If the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Kansas issues a different ruling, the Supreme Court may have to step in.

Most of SAVE plan is still in effectThe Biden administration rolled out the SAVE plan in the summer of 2023, describing it as "the most affordable student loan plan ever." Monday's district court rulings were different, but both dealt blows to the SAVE plan. AdvertisementEducation Secretary Miguel Cardona condemned the rulings on Monday, saying in a statement that "the Department of Justice will continue to vigorously defend the SAVE Plan." "While we continue to review these rulings, the SAVE plan still means lower monthly payments for millions of borrowers - including more than 4 million borrowers who owe no payments at all, and protections for borrowers facing runaway interest when they are making their monthly payments," he added. "All of this is to ask why: if these parts of the SAVE Plan promised an irreparable harm to plaintiffs, why didn't they move to enjoin the SAVE Plan before they took effect?" He also said that even without allowing student-loan forgiveness, the other provisions, like lower payments and limited interest accrual, will still provide relief to borrowers.

Read previewStudent-loan borrowers enrolled in President Joe Biden's new repayment plan may have just gotten some relief from legal challenges. Crabtree wrote that the three states' standing is "weaker than the one that prevailed" at the Supreme Court. Crabtree explained how this case is different from Biden v. Nebraska, the case brought before the Supreme Court. In the case to block SAVE, the states are not arguing they would lose money from servicing loans. It's also in the process of implementing a broader student-loan forgiveness plan to replace the one the Supreme Court struck down, which is also likely to result in lawsuits.
