Rather than building an entirely new vessel, it was decided to modify medium-sized landing ships (classified as LSMs for 'Landing Ship Medium'). Officially renamed USS White River in 1955, the ship was decommissioned again in 1956. A day after that, White River fired on a nearby VC anti-aircraft site, destroying it and killing or wounding 11 guerillas. Winstead/National ArchivesFuture shore bombardment and LSMsDespite its value and firepower, by 1970, White River was showing its age. Now known as the Medium Landing Ship program, the Navy hopes to acquire 18 to 35 of the vessels.

Lisa Tofano was baptized, confirmed and married at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Lake Opeka in Des Plaines, Ill. When she and her husband, John, visited the church last fall, however, it wasn’t to worship but rather to celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary at what the church had become: the Foxtail on the Lake, a restaurant. The transformation was not easy: The shuttered church needed an 18-month, $6 million gut renovation, and a new 3,000-square-foot kitchen, before it could start offering items like paella and beef shawarma, said David Villegas, a managing partner of Foxtail, who said he had been “a bit nervous” before the restaurant’s opening in November about the reaction of former parishioners. For Mrs. Tofano, though, “a church is more about the people than the building,” she said. Across the country, the number of empty churches and other houses of worship is sharply rising, and these structures, often unique architectural gems, have become huge draws for business owners.

The Illinois Lottery said the prize was claimed by two individuals who had agreed to split the prize if they won. The winners wish to remain anonymous, and the Illinois Lottery said it was unable to share any information about the winners except to say that they must be absolutely “over the moon” with their Mega Millions win. Lottery officials said the winners opted to take the lump sum payment of $780.5 million. “These winners are now in the enviable position of deciding what to do with their newfound fortune,” said Illinois Lottery Director Harold Mays.
