Cher seems to forget about her high-tech closet throughout the film. Cher's closet can pick out outfits for her. Paramount PicturesCher's massive wardrobe and fantastic outfits have become iconic, and most "Clueless" fans probably dreamt of owning the computer program Cher uses to put together her famous yellow plaid outfit at the beginning of the film. The program allows her to click between tops and bottoms that she owns to see what the combination will look like, and it can even tell her if the outfit will match or clash. Although she has this useful application and struggles to pick outfits throughout the film, Cher never uses this high-tech closet's program again.

The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday sued Visa, the world’s biggest payments network, saying it propped up an illegal monopoly over debit payments by imposing “exclusionary” agreements on partners and smothering upstart firms. “Merchants and banks pass along those costs to consumers, either by raising prices or reducing quality or service,” Garland said. They are essentially toll collectors, shuffling payments between the merchants’ banks and cardholders. ″Visa wields its dominance, enormous scale, and centrality to the debit ecosystem to impose a web of exclusionary agreements on merchants and banks,” the DOJ said in its release. “These agreements penalize Visa’s customers who route transactions to a different debit network or alternative payment system.”This is a developing story.

New York CNN —The US Justice Department filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing Visa of illegally monopolizing the debit card market. The antitrust suit is one of several major actions taken by the Justice Department recently. It also comes just three years after the Justice Department sued to block Visa from merging with financial technology startup Plaid. According to the new complaint against Visa, which was filed in federal court in New York, more than 60% of debit transactions in the country take place on Visa’s debit network. Visa, in turn, is able to charge more than $7 billion in processing fees on those transactions, the department says.

At least 140 officers were assaulted during the attack, and several officers died in the aftermath: one of natural causes, others by suicide. “Kamala Harris isn’t talking about the historic nature of this,” Walz, the Democratic running mate, told supporters here at a rally. But the strategies of both sides have overlapping objectives, with Trump working to widen his advantage with White men while making gains among young Black and Latino voters. “They both have their qualities, they both have their flaws,” said Hernandez, a North Carolina voter who is torn between Trump and Harris. But the Trump campaign is also targeting many of the same voters, particularly young men whose decision whether to vote – and for whom – could be a turning point in the election. Women make up a slim majority of the electorate, but the degree to which Trump can hold onto male voters could determine the outcome of the November election.

CNN —Taylor Swift was among the many stars to channel ’90s fashion at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, wearing a chic taffeta bustier and skirt by Dior. But with its punk-accented stylings, in the form of black buckles, collar and zipped fitted front, Swift’s version is, by far, the edgiest. Quoting its founder Christian Dior, the brand called tartan “the only fancy fabric that resists fashions” in the show notes. The look on Wednesday night was a departure from Swift’s typical red carpet style. Taylor Swift's outfit was hot off the Dior Cruise 2025 runway, staged in Perthshire, Scotland.

How plaid became popular for school uniforms
  + stars: | 2024-09-05 | by ( Jacqui Palumbo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
CNN —As students return to school, one patterned textile now synonymous with uniforms will make its seasonal reappearance on pleated skirts, jumpers and ties: plaid. It’s a family of textiles with broad scholarly appeal, with both religious and secular schools worldwide incorporating plaid into uniforms, from Mexico to Japan to Australia. Centuries of romanticizing Highlander clanship and identity has likely influenced our contemporary understanding of the textile, Maxwell noted. But the textile didn’t become a fixture of school uniforms until the 1960s, according to historian and educator Sally Dwyer-McNulty, who authored “Common Threads: A Cultural History of Clothing in American Catholicism” in 2014. (Dwyer-McNulty herself attended two different Catholic schools in Philadelphia, wearing plaid uniforms through high school).
