This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karla Trotman, President and CEO of Electro Soft Inc., a US specialty electronics manufacturer in Pennsylvania. My dad and I worked together, and in 2020, I bought them out, so now I'm the owner, president, and CEO. We're still feeling the reverberation from the last round of tariffs, so they never really went away in our industry. Tariff proponents seem to think that enforcing them will cause stateside manufacturing to somehow jump up and be prosperous, but it doesn't really work that way. We really need to understand where our partners are headed so we can flex to meet whatever demand is going to come down the pike.

“It’s like Typhoid Mary being in charge of food safety.”But another group was celebrating Trump’s pick: the anti-vaccine movement Kennedy leads. She and Polly Tommey, director of CHD.TV and a longtime anti-vaccine activist, reflected on Kennedy’s power within their campaign. Holland urged viewers to “educate” the public and Congress that Kennedy’s anti-vaccine claims were accurate, aiming to boost his support among senators who would vote on his confirmation. Kennedy now has a chance to bring that advocacy into the top public health office in the country. Stone replied, “I am over the moon about the appointment.”Others relished how Kennedy might bring a dreamed-about reckoning in public health agencies and retribution against former public health officials.

Third Point's Daniel Loeb believes the odds are rising that former President Donald Trump will win the U.S. presidency this November over Vice President Kamala Harris and the influential hedge fund manager is increasing positions that would benefit under a Republican administration and Congress. But Loeb in his quarterly missive said he was increasing both "stock and option purchases" to bet on the Trump win scenario. Loeb is not alone on Wall Street in making those bets with JPMorgan most recently highlighting gains in bank stocks and the U.S. dollar as signs more investors see a Republican win. The fund gained 4% last quarter, according to the letter, also trailing the market. But he sees the improvement in market breadth that began in the third quarter continuing, especially under a Republican administration.

Elliott Investment Management has requested a special meeting at Southwest Airlines , formalizing the launch of a long-signaled proxy fight for control of the carrier's board. Elliott has also trimmed the size of its board slate from 10 director candidates to eight, after Southwest shrunk its board size from 15 to 12. CNBC reported last month that Elliott was preparing to call a special meeting. David Hess, who joined Southwest's board in 2021, was also on the board of Arconic in the midst of its proxy fight with Elliott. Elliott has never before called for a special meeting, which at Southwest carries a higher threshold of approval compared with voting at a regularly scheduled shareholder meeting.

Elliott Management said Tuesday it will call a special meeting at Southwest Airlines "as soon as next week," shortly after the company put forward a sweeping board shakeup that it hoped might stave off a proxy fight. The push comes days before the airline's investor meeting, where it is expected to unveil improvements and operating changes. Southwest's shareholder meeting is typically scheduled for May, but by calling for a special meeting Elliott is looking to elect new directors much sooner than that. Earlier this month, executive chairman and former CEO Gary Kelly said he would step down after the carrier's shareholder meeting next year. "The need for change is urgent, and our request for a special meeting may come as soon as next week," Pike and Xu said.

Simone Biles is looking to add yet another Olympic gold medal to her growing collection at the Paris Games. This time, she will compete in the vault final, where — once again — she is the favorite to win. If she does win, it will be her seventh Olympic gold medal and 10th over all. Three years ago, during the team final at the Tokyo Games, Biles got lost in the air while performing a vault because of a mental block and subsequently withdrew from most of her other events. Andrade won the vault gold medal at the Tokyo Games after Biles pulled out of several events with a mental block.

The Federal Reserve now has egg on its face after it kept interest rates near a quarter-century high earlier this week. By now, there’s ample evidence that the job market, a key driver of the US economy, has lost steam. Here are three reasons to be worried about July’s shockingly weak jobs report — and one silver lining. Consumer demand itself also hasn’t weakened just yet, despite the highest interest rates in more than two decades. Generally, the Fed makes its decision congruent with what’s going on with inflation or the job market.

What’s Uniting, and Dividing, Native Voters in ArizonaNative American voters were key to helping Democrats clinch Arizona in 2020. But in this election, many Native voters say they feel exhausted, disappointed and torn about how to vote. But overall it was frustration and anxiety that we heard as we talked with more than four dozen voters around Phoenix and on the Navajo Nation, the country’s largest reservation, about their concerns. Many voters felt like they had been left out of the state’s growing economy, with unemployment for Native Americans almost double the national average. Most of the voters we spoke to said no, but some were willing to give him another shot.
