“Gladiator” director Ridley Scott recently told The New York Times that Russell Crowe said Joaquin Phoenix was being “terribly unprofessional” on set when Phoenix was getting cold feet and had to be convinced to stay on the movie. Crowe headlined “Gladiator” as Maximus, with Phoenix starring as the villainous Commodus. “[Joaquin] was in his prince’s outfit saying, ‘I can’t do it,’” Scott recalled, “I said, ‘What?’ And Russell said, ‘This is terribly unprofessional.’”When asked how he convinced Phoenix to stay on the film, Scott asked: “I can act as a big brother or dad. It appears Phoenix got cold feet on “Gladiator” as well, although Scott was able to get him to stay on. Variety has reached out to Phoenix and Crowe’s representative for comment regarding Scott’s “Gladiator” set story.

CNN —A historically hot summer in the United States is on a July killing spree and the toll will only grow with the hottest days yet to come. It’s been the hottest summer on record to date for around 100 US cities from Maine to California. Nine were over the age of 65, the county medical examiner told CNN. At least 10 suspected heat deaths are being reported in Oregon. The region is still typically quite hot in July even without heat reaching record levels daily.

He wanted to hire Johansson to voice his company’s newest ChatGPT model, “Sky.” She said no. Johansson quickly lawyered up, saying Monday she was “shocked, angered and in disbelief” that Altman would use a voice “so eerily similar” to her own. OpenAI was forced to confront some of those concerns late last week, after two prominent employees left the company. “Being friends with AI will be so much easier than forging bonds with human beings,” wrote Wired editor Brian Barrett in a recent essay about the movie.

Joaquin Phoenix Photo: AppleTV+Joaquin Phoenix finds Napoleon morose, anguished, petulant and a bit childlike, which reminds me that although I enjoyed his morose, anguished, petulant and a bit childlike performance as the Joker, his decision to play Jesus Christ as morose, anguished, petulant and a bit childlike, in 2019’s little-seen “ Mary Magdalene ,” felt a bit off. Mr. Phoenix even appeared morose, etc. (Being 49, Mr. Phoenix is too old for all but the final moments.) Most of the movie is a vaguely comical swipe at Napoleon in domestic life—an awkward lover, a jealous husband, an inveterate complainer, and in sum an annoying twerp. Mr. Phoenix’s Napoleon could never have commanded so much as a squadron of the Salvation Army, and though the movie is sprinkled with a few reasonably hearty battle scenes, overall it’s something like Mr. Scott’s Waterloo.

When the costume designer David Crossman, who specializes in military wear, first knew he would be working on “Napoleon” (in theaters Wednesday), Ridley Scott’s epic starring Joaquin Phoenix, he had a “mini panic” about the hats. It wasn’t that he would have to be recreating Napoleon Bonaparte’s famous headgear, the kind for which collectors pay dearly (one just sold for $2.1 million). He examined objects from a private collection as well as examples of real Napoleon hats in the Musée de l’Armée in Paris. Phoenix’s hats may have been built from bark cloth, but they were true to size. There were three key versions for the character reproduced many times over, Crossman said, as well as a glorious array of hats for various generals, allies, and enemies.

Napoleon, played by Academy Award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix, is a talented young officer whose military victories quickly vault him into influence and power. The fact that Napoleon can’t live up to his own larger-than-life image is part of what makes Napoleon larger than life. There are obvious differences between Trump and Napoleon — Trump avoided the draft and was not a successful general; Napoleon was never elected and conquered large parts of Europe; Trump’s coup attempt was unsuccessful. “Napoleon” suggests that our fascination with grotesque populist windbags is itself a source of their power. Napoleon might not love this movie, but he’d surely enjoy seeing his face blown up there on the big screen.

In the best game of his young NBA career so far, Victor Wembanyama dropped 38 points, to go along with 10 rebounds and two blocks, powering the San Antonio Spurs to a 132-121 victory over the Phoenix Suns. This was the second matchup between the Spurs and the Suns in Arizona this week, with the two sides clashing on Tuesday at the Footprint Center. The Spurs came away with the victory that night too, rallying from 20 points down to win on a last-second shot, although the formula of Thursday’s game was completely different. The Spurs were quick out of the blocks, outscoring the Suns by 19 in the first quarter alone. The Spurs improve to 3-2 while the Suns, who are still without All-Star guard Bradley Beal, drop to 2-3.

PHOENIX (AP) — After a summer of extreme heat, Arizona’s most populous city is in the record books again. The National Weather Service said Sunday that the monsoon season this year in the arid Southwest dropped only 0.15 inches (.38 centimeters) of rainfall from June 15 to September 30. Phoenix’s average rainfall during a monsoon season is 2.43 inches (6.1 centimeters). Confirmed heat-associated deaths in Arizona’s most populous county continue to rise in the aftermath of the record summer heat. Scientists predict the numbers will only continue to climb as climate change makes heat waves more frequent, intense and enduring.

In Newark, Chicago and other cities’ airport terminals, moving walkways have been removed to make room for more shops and restaurants. Some new airport terminals have recently opened without moving walkways. The airport is now building a tunnel to shorten the walk from security to the concourse. So, are people missing flights now because they have to walk so far?

But the heat is far from over for Phoenix and millions of others across the Central US. Tuesday’s high temperature was 108 degrees in Phoenix, or 2 degrees above average. It wasn’t just high temperatures breaking records: The city also set a new record warm low temperature of 97 degrees during the streak. It's official, this July was the hottest month in Phoenix on record, with an average temperature of 102.7°F. The fear of a surge in heat-related deaths prompted the Maricopa County medical examiner to bring in 10 refrigerated containers last week to handle a possible overflow of bodies.

The city smashed through another record last week, racking up the most 115-degree days ever in a calendar year, part of a global heat wave that made July Earth’s hottest month on record. This has been Phoenix’s July in hell — an entire month of merciless heat that has ground down people’s health and patience in the city of 1.6 million, while also straining a regionwide campaign to protect homeless people and older residents who are most vulnerable.

José Guerrero’s phone buzzes from morning to midnight with sweaty pleas for help: The air-conditioner fan just quit. As Phoenix slogs through a record 20 straight days of 110-degree or higher temperatures, Mr. Guerrero, 33, has emerged as maybe the most essential worker in a town desperate to stay cool: the A.C. repair guy. “We live in a city where you have to have it,” he said. So now, Mr. Guerrero, his two brothers and their father roll out seven days a week, heading for suffocating attics and tar-shingled rooftops across the Valley of the Sun to coax ailing air-conditioners back to life. They fix leaking refrigerant lines, replace burned-out capacitors and try to lower Phoenix’s temperature a few degrees.

CNN —An already dangerous weeks-long heat wave will only worsen this weekend as a heat dome intensifies and reaches peak strength over parts of the Western United States. Around 100 million people are under heat alerts after the heat dome expanded into places like California, which is now experiencing its first extreme heat wave of the year. This shows how hot areas are compared to average with darker shades indicating more extreme heat. That’s only happened a handful of times, one of which is the all-time global record high temperature of 134 degrees. Before this latest wave, heat has already killed at least 12 people in Phoenix’s Maricopa County this year, and killed 425 people last year.
