The music festival All Things Go took place on Saturday and Sunday in Maryland and New York. Chappell Roan, a major draw, dropped out at the last minute — but other performers made up for it. Artists like MUNA, Reneé Rapp, and Janelle Monáe proved that other queer artists deserve the spotlight, too. AdvertisementOn Sunday evening, MUNA welcomed the crowd at Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavilion to All Things Go Music Festival, which the group lovingly dubbed "Lesbopalooza." "Brat," along with viral hits like Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" and Tinashe's "Nasty," have ushered in a season of pleasure and levity — what my friends and I have been calling a "smooth brain summer." The primary lure of pop music has always been escapism. Indeed, we've lived in a pop world dominated by Taylor Swift and refashioned in her likeness for several years. These peculiar bops form the perfect foundation for a "smooth brain summer" soundtrack — though please note that doesn't mean they're devoid of value or meaning. An appetite (and a need) still exists for complex metaphors, history lessons, and personal revelations in pop music — but now is not the time.

Listening to boygenius, Together and Apart

Dear listeners,It’s been a big week for boygenius, the singer-songwriter supergroup of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. “This is our last show,” Dacus told the crowd, “and we’re feeling it.”Is it weird to say I wasn’t mad about this news? “The Record” itself had been an unexpected bonus, since boygenius initially seemed like a one-off project that wouldn’t last longer than a six-song EP and a subsequent tour. But the runaway success of “The Record” also means that some people are more familiar with boygenius than with the three accomplished solo artists who make up the group. It’s a celebration of both the individual work of Baker, Bridgers and Dacus (which sounds like a law firm that I would definitely hire) and also the magic that happens when they put their Captain Planet powers together and become boygenius.

Dear listeners,I can hardly believe I’m saying this, but this year’s Grammys were … really good? Tracy Chapman, radiating joy and in fine voice, sang “Fast Car” publicly for the first time in ages, alongside a visibly reverent Luke Combs. For today’s playlist, we’re going to hear from some more of those slightly-less-than-household-name artists who took home Grammys this year. I chose two selections of my own, and I also asked my fellow Times pop critics Jon Pareles and Jon Caramanica to send me a few of their picks — a mix of jazz, folk, pop, gospel and more. Listen below to tracks from Laufey, Peso Pluma and Samara Joy, and check out the Bonus Tracks for more of our Grammy coverage.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When the 2024 Grammy nominees were first announced, women dominated the major categories. And at Sunday's show, those nominations translated into awards: Every televised competitive Grammy went to at least one woman. But at the Grammys, where much of the focus is on performers, it appeared like women were ruling the industry. “I know that the way the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” she said. SZA, who led nominations with nine, took home three awards — but was completely shut out of the general field categories.

It's Taylor Swift's world, and she just allows us to live in it. “Midnights” earned Swift her fourth career Grammy for album of the year on Sunday, an achievement no one can match. It breaks a tie with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder, who each won the honor three times. Swift was the last example of an action-packed show where women earned the biggest honors and had the majority of the most memorable performances. There was a brief pause before SZA accepted an award for best R&B song, since she was changing backstage.

Those include two major categories: record of the year (for the single “Not Strong Enough”) album of the year (for their debut “The Record” ). CNN —The indie supergroup boygenius released a charity single on Friday, paying tribute to Sinéad O’Connor, the Irish singer-songwriter who died in July at age 56. Boygenius collaborated with Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds to produce a cover of the popular folk song “The Parting Glass,” with the proceeds going to the Aisling Project – a Dublin-based charity chosen by O’Connor’s estate, which provides after-school activities, support and meals for disadvantaged children and young people. “We are absolutely thrilled that boygenius have chosen to give proceeds from the release to Aisling Project,” Project Leader Mícheál Clear told CNN. “It’s an absolute privilege to be associated with the stunningly beautiful homage to Sinéad O’Connor and we can’t possibly thank boygenius enough.”Sinéad O'Connor performs in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1988. Like the recently Grammy-nominated boygenius, O’Connor also sang a version of “The Parting Glass” as a track on her 2002 album “Sean-Nós Nua.”
