Soto, 26, is hands down this winter’s most highly sought-after free agent, valued as much for his elite baseball skills as for his birth date. And in an age of swing-for-the-fences baseball, Soto struck out just 16.7% of the time, while the league whiffed at a 22.2% clip this season. Free agency is “going to be exciting,” Soto told reporters moments after the Yankees lost Game 5 of the World Series, ending the baseball season. The AL champion Yankees had the second-highest MLB payroll, at $309.8 million for their 40-man roster, according to Baseball Prospectus. There's no telling when Soto or other any free agents will come to terms with their 2025 teams.

Philadelphia Phillies managing partner and principal owner John Middleton signs autographs prior to the 2024 London Series game between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies at London Stadium in London on June 9, 2024. The Philadelphia Phillies recently raised close to $500 million in capital from three new investors in a transaction that values the Major League Baseball team and its 25% stake in regional sports network NBC Sports Philadelphia at about $3 billion, according to two people familiar with the deal. Given that limited-partner stakes typically go for about 20% less than control stakes because LPs have no say in how the team is run, the $3 billion valuation equates to roughly a $3.7 billion control valuation. A little more than a year ago, Middleman purchased a 16.25% stake in the Phillies at a grossed up valuation of $2.8 billion. Based on revenue multiples, a $3.7 billion control valuation for the Phillies would be eight times 2023 revenue, compared with multiples of 5.3 for the Orioles and 6.7 for the Mets, according to historic revenue calculations.

Never before had a team rallied to win the World Series after losing the first three games. These Yankees made history, but not the way they wanted – they are the only team to blow a five-run lead while facing elimination from the World Series. Then came something that’s always trouble: a little roller along first by a guy named Mookie in a World Series game in New York. AdvertisementIt was only the seventh game in World Series history in which a team lost after leading by five or more runs. And that no team in 54 years had won even once after losing the first three games of a World Series.

But in reality, the Yankees’ embarrassing performance in the World Series is a systemwide breakdown. They’re not getting away with it against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. It’s been a rough World Series for the Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm and Aaron Judge. And the Yankees actually should be capable of winning one with the Dodgers planning a bullpen game Tuesday night. Defensive miscues by right fielder Juan Soto and second baseman Gleyber Torres haunted the Yankees in Game 1.

Rose was one of baseball’s greats – a winning-obsessed sparkplug who topped MLB’s all-time hit list with 4,256 over a 24-season career. It wasn’t until 2004 that Rose publicly admitted betting on baseball and the Reds, though he denied ever betting against his own team. Sometimes, on the weekend of baseball Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York, he also would hold autograph sessions at a nearby bookstore. While Cooperstown didn’t admit him into its Hall of Fame, the Reds got him into theirs with the commissioner’s permission. That was the perfect way to capture Rose, said Johnny Bench, the Hall of Fame catcher.

Pete Rose, who holds the Major League Baseball record for hits and games played, has died at the age of 83, according to a spokesperson for the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner in Nevada. The hard-charging Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” broke Ty Cobb’s 57-year-old hits record in 1985. After his playing career, Rose continued as manager of the Reds. In 1989, Rose was banned from baseball for life after an investigation concluded that he had bet on games while he was both a Reds player and manager. Over the years, Rose applied for reinstatement as well as possible inclusion into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Sports betting is continuing its integration into modern sports culture, and industry leaders do not expect the growth to slow down any time soon. As much tailwind as sports betting companies have received from growing legalization and popularity across the country, taxes and ethical concerns have presented difficulties. Several states have a 51% tax on sports betting companies, and Illinois recently approved a tax increase on sports betting revenue. Sports betting has also garnered negative headlines in recent months as professional sports leagues have struggled to effectively stop players from violating betting and gambling rules. The speakers also addressed widespread concerns about whether the nature of sports betting companies' business models discourages them from providing proper guardrails to stop gambling problems.
