CANCUN, Mexico (AP) — Iga Swiatek earned her first WTA Finals title and the year-end No. She is the youngest WTA Finals champion since Petra Kvitova was 21 in 2011. Pegula called it “an amazing year.”“You continue to push me to be a better player every single year,” Pegula said. In Cancun, Swiatek defeated Sabalenka in a semifinal that began Saturday, was suspended by rain, then finished on Sunday. The singles and doubles title matches both originally were scheduled to be contested Sunday, then were pushed back after a series of showers affected play during the WTA Finals.

But Swiatek, who had surrendered her top ranking to Aryna Sabalenka after losing to Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round of the season's final Grand Slam last month, regained her grip on her rivalry with Gauff to reach a seventh final this year. Up next for Swiatek is Samsonova, who beat former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 7-6(7) 6-3 to improve her head-to-head record over the Moscow-born Kazakh world number five to 4-0. "Every time it's a battle with Elena ... She's a champion," Samsonova said. The 24-year-old Samsonova, who is ranked 22, has now beaten three former Grand Slam champions in Beijing with victories over Petra Kvitova and Ostapenko in earlier rounds. "When you get to the last stages of the tournament, you're going to think about what if, what I want, what I would like and you're dreaming," Sabalenka told reporters after crushing China's Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday. "I'm not trying to block the stats, because when you're trying to block something it's going to keep getting in your head and it can get annoying. When you're not trying to block it, it actually goes away. Keys, meanwhile, is hoping to fulfil her own dream of reaching Saturday's final for another shot at a maiden Grand Slam trophy. Czech Muchova is also gunning for a first Grand Slam title after coming close in Paris in her bid to join an elite list of compatriots that includes Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova, Barbora Krejcikova and Vondrousova.

Ostapenko, the 20th seed in New York, struck 31 winners en route to her victory, ending Świątek’s 75-week run as world No. Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka is set to take over top spot for the first time after the US Open. “I think the main thing is she doesn’t really like to play big hitters,” Ostapenko told reporters after her win. If she’s successful, Wozniacki, 33, would join a short list of mothers who have reached the finals of a grand slam, or won. But the rule limits how many grand slams players can enter, something that tennis pro Taylor Townsend of Chicago would like to see changed. No matter what level of income a player earns, the training required to compete and win at the elite level in tennis is intense. “It’s certainly hard enough to win a grand slam without having a child going, ‘Mom, when are you coming back?’ ” Stubbs told CNN. “Serena … I think she wanted to win the grand slam as a mom more than anything,” she said.

In the second round, a resurgent Wozniacki earned her first top-20 win in nearly five years with a straight-sets upset of 11th seed Petra Kvitova. CNN —Caroline Wozniacki has continued her remarkable comeback to tennis by claiming a big win at this year’s US Open. Wozniacki was away from competitive tennis for over three years before returning to action less than a month ago. She made light work of her first round match at Flushing Meadows and was in brilliant form again against two-time grand slam champion Kvitová. At the same time, she obviously has had a great year,” Wozniacki said after the match, per the WTA. The 33-year-old Wozniacki, who was runner-up at the US Open in 2009 and 2014, will now face American Jennifer Brady in the next round.

But while results followed the form book for much of the day at the year's final Grand Slam, shocks sprung up as the sun went down. Earlier, Swiss young gun Dominic Stricker delivered a shock by grinding out a 7-5 6-7(2) 6-7(5) 7-6(6) 6-3 win over Greek seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas for his first top-10 win. Djokovic remains on course for a fourth U.S. Open title that would pull him level with Margaret Court's record haul of 24 Grand Slams. Sixth seed Gauff warmed up the home crowd early when the teenager beat Mirra Andreeva 6-3 6-3, before handing the baton to the U.S. men.

While her greatest success has come on grass, 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina's style can be devastating on hard courts, as she showed in some key clashes with major rivals on the surface this year. The 24-year-old beat Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final and got the better of Swiatek in straight sets at both the Australian Open and Indian Wells. Muchova will be feeling particularly confident, having reached the final of the Cincinnati Masters with wins over two top-10 ranked players -- Sabalenka and Sakkari. Muchova's compatriot Vondrousova will be hoping to build on her title-winning Wimbledon run, while two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova is one of the most experienced players in the draw and will prove a tough test for any opponent. The presence of former world number ones Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, who have been given wild cards by organisers, adds another layer of unpredictability to the draw.

Azarenka upsets Krejcikova, Wozniacki loses Cincinnati opener

Aug 15 (Reuters) - Twice champion Victoria Azarenka upset Czech 11th seed Barbora Krejcikova 6-3 7-5 on Tuesday to reach the Cincinnati Open second round while Danish wildcard Caroline Wozniacki, in her second tournament out of retirement, lost her opening match. The 34-year-old unseeded Belarusian Azarenka broke Krejcikova four times, saved three of five break points and won the final five games of a match lasting one hour 45 minutes. Krejcikova battled to get the opener back on serve but Azarenka broke right back and then went on to serve out the first set in the following game on her second set point. Former world number one Wozniacki had her chances but failed to convert any of her nine break points while Gracheva's backhand proved too much for the Dane to handle. Czech ninth seed Petra Kvitova, a Cincinnati finalist last year, also booked her spot in the second round with a 7-6(2) 6-0 win over Russian Anna Blinkova.

Instead, a distraught Jabeur was left with tears streaming down her face as her Wimbledon dream was wrecked in the final for the second year running with a 6-4 6-4 drubbing. The 24-year-old left-hander, who a year ago needed wrist surgery, proved too steady for the error-strewn Jabeur who ended up as runner-up as she did in 2022. Vondrousova one step from 'mission impossible'

LONDON, July 13 (Reuters) - For Marketa Vondrousova the very notion of winning Wimbledon was an impossibility a year ago, but on Saturday she has the chance to add her name to an esteemed list of Czech champions. Not only that, but Prague-based Vondrousova, 24, can become the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon. I didn't play for almost six months, so it was very tough," Vondrousova told reporters when asked to cast her mind back 12 months. It was really sad," Vondrousova, who made a tentative return to the second-tier ITF Tour last October, said. But something clicked and she has beaten 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova, 20th seed Donna Vekic, 32nd seed Marie Bouzkova and fourth seed Jessica Pegula.

"Last year was my first final of a Grand Slam. I'm going to learn a lot from not only Wimbledon's final but also the U.S. Open final and give it my best. She plays very good," Jabeur said. I'm not sure how she's going to play her second Grand Slam final. Jabeur, who will have the Arab world rooting for her on Saturday, has certainly earned her place in the final.

Victorious Jabeur delighted that she stuck to Plan A

"Sometimes someone like Elena pushes you to play different plans but I'm glad that I did stick to the one we agreed on," Jabeur said. She was putting a lot of pressure on me so I'm very, very glad that I stayed focused. I was thinking 'If you want to hit hard, I'm ready to hit hard, too'". "I also think I'm hitting better. But believing that I can hit as hard as the other players, I think that makes the difference for me.

She will play second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semis after the Belarusian beat American Madison Keys in straight sets earlier. "I wish we could exchange this match from the final last year," Jabeur said. "Then I really tried to get back in the zone and believe this plan is the plan and kept going. I think I'm going to end up writing a book about my emotions because this is unbelievable. With the crowd behind her, the 28-year-old Jabeur was bouncing around the court when she broke to love for a 2-0 lead.

Jabeur was one set away from becoming the first African woman and Arab player to win a Grand Slam singles title before Rybakina mounted a fierce comeback. I was telling my mum - I want to win a Grand Slam, I want to be number one," she told reporters. But as soon as she was done, she immediately set her sights on Rybakina. Since her maiden Grand Slam triumph, Rybakina has cemented her place in the sport's new 'Big Three' in the women's game along with Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. "Every player has weaknesses, you always try to play there, listen to your coach more often," Jabeur added.

Tunisian sixth seed Jabeur had to come from a set down against Bianca Andreescu on Saturday but had no such problems on a blustery afternoon as she raced through the first set in 22 minutes, almost unchallenged. Her crowd-pleasing variety of slice and change of pace and angle left the 2011 and 2014 champion flailing. The ninth-seeded Czech had the briefest of recoveries in the second set but it did not last and Jabeur finished off in style, breaking to love. Third-seeded Kazakh Rybakina, who beat Jabeur in three sets in last year’s final, went through after Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia retired at 4-1 down in the first set with a back injury. Second seed Djokovic will hope his 101st match at Wimbledon - against seventh-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev in the last eight - will mark a return to vintage form. Rybakina, meanwhile, had an easier route into the quarter-finals after her Brazilian opponent retired with a back injury while trailing the third seed 4-1 in the first set. "It was really unlucky for Beatriz and I hope she gets better," added Rybakina. It was also a day to rejoice for fellow American Eubanks, who got past Tsitsipas 3-6 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4 6-4 to make the quarter-finals on his Wimbledon debut. "I feel like I'm living a dream right now, this is absolutely insane," said Eubanks, who meets Medvedev next.

With a straight sets victory over Alexander Zverev without dropping serve in the third round, Berrettini has suddenly emerged as a dark horse at Wimbledon. "I'm not seeded but it's a tough draw," said a smiling Berrettini, a finalist in 2021. Berrettini missed the 2022 Wimbledon with COVID-19 while injuries in the past year saw the Italian's ranking plummet. "Every match that I win on Centre Court is better for me to get into this court, this atmosphere ... I feel that I belong to that court," Alcaraz said.
