A recent report from ProPublica found that the government itself might also have been a target of those anticompetitive practices. Microsoft offered the government access to its G5 security capabilities free for the first year as well as consultants to help install the products, ProPublica reported. The goal was to "spin the meter" for Azure and help it gain market dominance over its competitor, Amazon, a sales representative for Microsoft told ProPublica. Many readers said that while they didn’t absolutely need to start collecting Social Security early, they calculated that they would come out ahead by investing some or all of their checks in the stock market rather than waiting. I agree with Peggy Bishop that some people simply have to collect Social Security at the first opportunity. They don’t have enough savings to tide them over to age 70 without Social Security. Saying you should delay claiming Social Security when possible is not the same as saying you should keep working past the breaking point of body and soul. ☆ Wall Street views Coinbase through an election lens and soft pedals weak earnings

Coinbase Global's latest earnings were even weaker than expected, but with an eye toward next week's election and its effect on cryptocurrency markets, many analysts on Wall Street say the exchange is still a buy. Coinbase also warned that an October drop in the price of ether could offset growth in nontrading revenue in the current quarter. Coinbase tumbled as much as 8.6% in early trading Thursday, touching a low of $193.56. The election outcome at one point was widely viewed as a key catalyst for the price of bitcoin. On the earnings call, CEO Brian Armstrong said he expects to see "the most pro-crypto Congress ever" next year.

It's too early to act, given the results of next week's contests could move shares of Nextracker and its peers considerably. "We were pleasantly surprised and gratified that this was the best solar earnings we've seen this quarter," Jim Cramer said Thursday. It seems perverse that Donald Trump would single out Canada and Mexico, two of the United States’ closest allies, for higher tariffs. It makes little sense to set off a tariff tit-for-tat with two countries that are both near and friends. Trump also vowed higher tariffs on China, citing its production of precursor chemicals for fentanyl. The United States gets 60 percent of its imported oil from Canada, along with cars, machinery and wood products. And the United States would lose exports if those nations retaliated with tariffs of their own.

Those rising numbers point to a trend that Washington Post reporter Heather Long dubbed the "treat yourself economy" in a conversation with Marketplace last week.
