CNN —CNN Opinion asked political contributors to weigh in on the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. On the other hand, President Joe Biden did not meet expectations and may have increased concerns about his age and ability to lead for another four years. Debates are always more about style than substance, and President Joe Biden’s style was simply awful. Did President Joe Biden come off as a leader or a loser? And yes, the visuals in this first presidential debate of the cycle were phenomenally important.

CLOSE THE BORDER!”Peter Bergen CNNTrump is already in general election mode and he knows that the southern border is a weak spot for President Joe Biden. Strangely, we aren’t hearing stories of terror attacks across the US by people who infiltrated the southern border. Yet no one is calling to build a wall across the Canadian border because of concerns that terrorists are pouring in across America’s northern border. The scaremongering about terrorists pouring across the southern border also misstates where the terrorist threat in the US largely emanates from. When it comes to acts of terrorism, it might behoove Trump to take a careful look in the mirror instead of misdirecting attention to the southern border.

And yet, some corporate titans are still pushing for their employees to return to their offices. Working parents, in particular, benefit from not having to waste time, money and flexibility commuting to an office. A 2023 Bankrate survey found that 74% of working women with children are in favor of remote work, while 64% of all working Americans support it. I am writing this column in Washington, DC, but work with editors in New York, London or Atlanta. So why do some bosses still feel it necessary to prolong the slow and necessary death of The Office?

There are rescue operations, typically by special operations forces. US special operations forces are offering their expertise and support to Israel, but are not part of a ground mission to rescue hostages. In 2010, the Taliban kidnapped British aid worker Linda Norgrove, and US Navy SEAL Team Six launched a rescue operation. Subsequent investigations revealed that Norgrove was killed by a fragmentation grenade thrown by a SEAL team member during the operation. In 2014, during a SEAL Team Six rescue operation in Yemen, American journalist Luke Somers was killed by his al Qaeda captors.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a speech Saturday condemning the mutiny by the Wagner group, comparing the uprising to the events sparked by Russia’s 1917 revolution. Putin claimed that the Russians were stabbed “in the back” by nameless enemies towards the end of World War I, which he said is why the Russians lost that war and that in turn led to “a civil war” in Russia, Putin said. The Russians were not stabbed in the back during World War I, as Putin suggested during his remarks on Saturday. During the 1917 revolution, a Marxist party known as the Bolsheviks seized power. A year later, Nicholas II and other members of the ruling Romanov family ended up on the wrong end of a firing squad.

CNN —At the heart of the case of “United States of America v. Donald J. Trump and Waltine Nauta” are 31 classified documents that former President Donald Trump kept at his Mar-a-Lago club, each briefly described in the indictment against him. Peter Bergen CNNTrump has pleaded not guilty to the charges and given a variety of defenses for his handling of the documents. London and Stout walked me through what can be learned about the documents in the indictment.
