An amphibious mouse with webbed feet and an unsightly blob-headed fish are among the more than two dozen new species scientists discovered in a remote region of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. The haul of new species was also accompanied by another 48 species that are potentially new to science but require further analysis, the report said. “It’s astonishing — to find four new species of mammals unknown to science is pretty impressive. CNN —Police in Peru have arrested a man caught trying to leave the country with 320 tarantulas, 110 centipedes and nine bullet ants strapped to his body. The insects were packaged inside plastic containers and bags strapped to the man's abdomen. SERFOR/ReutersA search revealed hundreds of insects packaged inside ziplock bags strapped to his abdomen, according to the statement. Tarantulas are a threatened species, Walter Silva, a wildlife specialist at SERFOR, explained in the statement. SERFOR officials display the confiscated insects.

Reuters —Rare images of the Mashco Piro, an uncontacted indigenous tribe in the remote Peruvian Amazon, were published on Tuesday by Survival International, showing dozens of the people on the banks of a river close to where logging companies have concessions. The Mashco Piro have been seen coming out of the rainforest more frequently in recent weeks. More than 50 Mashco Piro people appeared in recent days near a village of the Yine people called Monte Salvado. Several logging companies hold timber concessions inside the territory inhabited by the Mashco Piro. The Mashco Piro have also been sighted across the border in Brazil, said Rosa Padilha, at the Brazilian Catholic bishops’ Indigenous Missionary Council in the state of Acre.

And though there are Amazonian freshwater dolphin species alive today, they aren’t close kin to that ancient cetacean. There’s the South Asian river dolphin (Platanista genus) and the Amazon river dolphin (Inia genus), also known as the pink river dolphin, and the two groups include several species and subspecies. Researchers discovered the Amazonian dolphin fossil in 2018, near the Napo River in Loreto, Peru. At first, they thought it would turn out to be an ancient relative of modern Amazonian river dolphins. “That was a moment where everybody freaked out, because it wasn’t an Amazonian river dolphin,” Benites-Palomino said.
