China's National Bureau of Statistics on Friday reported third-quarter GDP growth of 4.6% year on year, slightly exceeding the 4.5% expected by economists polled by Reuters. "The national economy showed positive signs of growth in September," Sheng Laiyun, the bureau's deputy commissioner, said at the press conference, according to CNBC's translation of the Chinese. Other data also released on Friday, such as retail sales and industrial production, had also beat expectations, a hopeful sign for the world's second largest economy. Beijing has faced growing public scrutiny over its ability to meet its own annual growth target of "around 5%." Amid low consumer sentiment and a flagging property sector, the Chinese government has intensified stimulus measures in recent weeks in an effort to boost its lackluster economy.

To be sure, a Bloomberg report earlier Tuesday that the U.S. government was considering a cap on AI chip exports to certain Persian Gulf nations may also have dampened industry sentiment. Investors are sensitive to any updates on AI chip demand, given the dramatic rise in the stocks of Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and others over the past two years. Bottom line Artificial intelligence is alive and well, according to TSMC, which has emerged as the most valuable window into AI demand other than Nvidia itself. Netflix makes money. Netflix is actually bringing in so much money that it is turning a profit, while its competitors struggle to break even. And Netflix financed all that cash incineration by taking on many billions of dollars in debt. In 2019, Netflix had negative cash flow of $3.3 billion. That doesn't mean Netflix is going to go hog-wild on spending now that its thesis has been borne out.
