In its infancy, the United States was an act of political imagination — the idea that people could live free from tyranny, according to a set of clearly defined principles. Given what limited political imagination made possible, we must consider the bounty that could rise out of boundless vision. To imagine extravagant things is to want extravagant things. We have become so accustomed to mediocre political choices that we have forsaken the idea of sweeping change. We often forestall hope by detailing, at length, why the change we most want to see will never happen.

This week’s rapid spread of college campus encampments meant to protest the war has ratcheted up the pressure on the US over its support for Israel. Second gentleman Doug Emhoff spoke by phone with two Jewish leaders on campus, a White House official said, to discuss the immediate need to address antisemitism on college campuses. Despite being just miles from Columbia and the most tense scenes of the protests, Biden will not be making a visit to campus as he holds events in the New York area Friday. The White House must by May 8 certify whether Israel is complying. And while Sanders sought assurances from Biden on how he was approaching the situation, the president remained characteristically diplomatic, Shakir, the Sanders adviser said.

The Republican outrage machine kicked into gear over Easter weekend after President Biden noted that Sunday was being celebrated for more than one reason. International Transgender Day of Visibility is observed every year on March 31. This year, for the second time since Transgender Day of Visibility was established 15 years ago, and the last time until 2086, the two happened to coincide. President Biden publicly honored both of them, as he has done every year since he took office in 2021. He centered the poor,” Mr. Warnock said on CNN on Sunday.

CNN —A Supreme Court decision related to the election could determine the presidential victor this November, but it has nothing to do with former President Donald Trump. The study also said the “narrow” racial-turnout disparity that the high court heavily relied upon in its Shelby decision was based in part on the 2012 presidential election. Yet the study’s conclusion bolsters critics of the Shelby decision. They ignored it although they knew their decision would hurt Black voters, who tend to vote for the Democratic Party, he says. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — President Joe Biden on Sunday extolled the existence of Black churches, saying the world would be a different place if they were not around to show people the “power of faith” during times of darkness. The Democratic president spoke at St. John Baptist Church on the final day of a two-day visit to South Carolina designed to rally Black voters before the party's primary on Feb. 3. Opinion: One big lesson from New Hampshire
  + stars: | 2024-01-23 | by ( John | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
America is a divided nation, even on the subject of open primaries. New Hampshire is a good example of why more states should move toward more open primaries, not fewer. For instance, Louisiana has long enjoyed an open primary, but its new GOP governor is swearing to make a closed partisan primary reality. That’s why an effort to create open primaries in Washington, DC, is meeting stiff resistance from local Democrats. Election reform efforts like open primaries are a practical, citizen-led step towards healing our divisions and fitfully forming a more perfect union.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Last week, as Israel continued its military response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack, its political goals — and potential endgame — remained a source of huge controversy. A federal judge has temporarily blocked enforcement of a new election law in Florida. The law imposed new limits on voter registration and get-out-the-vote operations. Groups that retained certain voter registration information, such as for get-out-the-vote operations, could under the law also face felony prosecution. Critics also argued that the limit on non-citizen participation on registration drives violated the right to equal protection under federal law. They include eight chief executives of the 11 states that formed the Confederate States of America, which seceded and waged war to preserve slavery. Although white people enslaved Black people in Northern states in early America, by the eve of the Civil War, slavery was almost entirely a Southern enterprise. South Carolina, where the Civil War began, illustrates the familial ties between lawmakers and the nation’s history of slavery. Each of the seven white lawmakers who served in the 117th Congress is a direct descendant of a slaveholder, Reuters found. In researching America’s political elite, Reuters found names – almost always just a first name – of 712 people enslaved by the ancestors of the political elite.

The union for Starbucks staff says that workers at more than 150 stores will strike in the coming week. Starbucks Workers United said Friday morning that more than 3,500 workers would be on strike over the course of the next week because of the company's "hypocritical treatment of LGBTQIA+ workers." The union said that strikers would be "demanding that Starbucks negotiate a fair contract with union stores and stop their illegal union-busting campaign, which has significantly impacted Starbucks' LGBTQIA+ workforce." Starbucks did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, made outside of regular working hours, on what would happen to the striking stores. As of June 22, 329 Starbucks stores in the US have won union elections, according to Perfect Union.

Opinion: What King Charles should do now
  + stars: | 2023-05-07 | by ( Opinion Keith Magee | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Editor’s note: Keith Magee is senior fellow and visiting professor in cultural justice at University College London Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. Keith Magee Arron DunworthFor King Charles III, his coronation Saturday at London’s Westminster Abbey was the culmination of a lifetime spent preparing to ascend to the throne. The British monarch is, in theory at least, a neutral figurehead with no political affiliations, no manifesto and no discernible allegiance to any side in the so-called culture wars. If the sovereign joins them, other such families, organizations and eventually the UK government (despite its current stance) will surely follow suit. If that happens, Charles might yet, like his mother at the time of her coronation, become the living embodiment of a nation’s hope for a better, fairer future at home and abroad.

That’s the story I wanted to tell, but I didn’t know how. I didn’t know how to tell Harlow any of that because my story doesn’t fit traditional narratives about race or identity. My white family members didn’t change because I shamed them with an impressive lecture on systemic racism.
Factbox: Reaction to Biden's 2024 re-election campaign launch

WASHINGTON, April 25 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday formally launched his 2024 re-election bid, promising protection against right-wing extremists and highlighting the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. Below is some reaction to Biden's announcement:FORMER U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, LEADING REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR 2024 NOMINATION:"With such a calamitous and failed presidency, it is almost inconceivable that Biden would even think of running for reelection," Trump said in a statement. "Joe Biden feels very strongly that our country got off track in our pursuit of a more perfect union. REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE:"Biden is so out-of-touch that after creating crisis after crisis, he thinks he deserves another four years. DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE:"It's official: President Biden and Vice President Harris are running for reelection to stand up for democracy and defend our fundamental freedoms," the DNC said in a post on Twitter.
The Greater Idaho movement seeks to redraw state boundaries so rural Oregon can join Idaho. Moving the state boundary would require the approval of Oregon, Idaho, and the US Congress. Matt McCaw, a spokeperson for the group behind the Greater Idaho movement, told Insider they were confident the bill would pass Idaho's Senate in the coming weeks as well. McCaw said the Greater Idaho proposal would be a solution to the "longstanding problem" of the urban-rural divide. Proponents of Greater Idaho have said their plan is a way to avoid conflict, but it's unclear the impact moving the border would actually have.

Thompson, 37, is an aerospace engineer for NASA as well as the CEO and founder of the streetwear brand Girl in Space Club. For the better part of this year, Thompson has been designing and researching how to develop a stylish, pressurized suit for female astronauts. She joined NASA in 2010 and has been working with the organization for the past 12 years designing orbit trajectories for space missions. "Spacesuits have never been designed with women in mind," Thompson points out, despite the fact that women have been instrumental in designing space suits for astronauts.
