Just hours after 51-year-old Ramon Rivera was taken into custody following the trio of slayings, New York City Mayor Eric Adams was already questioning why the homeless man was walking free. He was released from a New York City jail on Oct. 17 for time served on burglary and assault charges, records showed. The day he was released, Rivera allegedly committed grand larceny by taking property from a Manhattan store, records showed. Then four days later, Rivera allegedly grabbed “phones and other electronics” from Hi Wireless store in Union City, another indictment said. In total, Rivera has been arrested eight times in New York City in the past year, court records showed.

But the Maine commissioner of public safety said on Saturday that he had no information to suggest that Mr. Card had ever been forcibly committed for mental health treatment. It is unclear whether he had admitted to his mental health issues in previous forms that are typically required at the time of purchasing the weapons. Reubens, 70, died overnight after a years-long battle with cancer, the post said. In 1982, Ruebens appeared in a popular stage show in Los Angeles known as "The Pee-wee Herman Show" as the lead character, which he developed. In 1986, the Saturday morning television show "Pee-wee’s Playhouse" debuted, launching Rueben's career that also included two feature films as Pee-wee Herman.

Ron DeSantis’ administration has blocked a new Advanced Placement course on African American studies from being taught in high schools, saying it violates state law and is historically inaccurate. The state education department rejected the program in a letter last week to the College Board, which oversees AP classes. The College Board website describes the course as interdisciplinary, touching on literature, arts, humanities, political science, geography and science. Sharon Courtney, a high school teacher in Peekskill, New York teaching the African American studies course, said her students were “shocked” to learn Florida blocked the class. She described it as a factual African history course that also details what Africans experienced upon their arrival in North America.
