This year, highlights from the Summer Olympics will be brought to you by artificial intelligence — and more specifically, the A.I.-generated narration of Al Michaels. The reel will feature the voice of Mr. Michaels, the 79-year-old American broadcaster, who first covered the Olympics decades ago. Mr. Michaels, however, will not be holing up in a broadcast booth each night to briefly summarize the dozens of Olympic events that took place. Mr. Michaels granted approval for the use of his voice. “When I was approached about this, I was skeptical but obviously curious,” Mr. Michaels said in a statement issued by the company.

Discovery said that they would bundle their streaming services, selling users a package that included Disney+, Hulu and Max. For years, the company has offered services like Netflix and Apple TV+ as add-ons to its existing television bundle, acting as a vendor for those companies. Comcast, which has millions of broadband and cable television customers across the United States, has different incentives to bundle streaming services together than many of its competitors do. Many other internet providers have sold bundles that include streaming services. When the short-lived short-form streaming service Quibi launched, T-Mobile offered to bundle its wireless offering with that service.

CNN —NBCUniversal’s high-stakes decision to exclusively air the NFL’s AFC Wild Card playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs on its streaming service Peacock drove record signups to the platform, a digital analytics firm said Wednesday. In the three days leading up to the January 13 kickoff in Kansas City, Peacock saw 2.8 million sign-ups, Antenna reported on Wednesday, citing preliminary data. Prior to the game, Peacock reached roughly 30 million subscribers, a significantly smaller number than CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery’s 95 million Max subscribers and Netflix’s 260 million global subscribers. Though it remains unclear just how many of the 2.8 million new subscribers will retain their Peacock service beyond the playoff game, the announcement comes as other streamers also appear to be getting serious about sports. Netflix on Tuesday announced it will stream WWE’s “Raw” beginning in 2025, the company’s biggest foray yet into live sports.

Photo: David Eulitt/Getty ImagesThe NFL playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins made history—and not just because it was so cold that one head coach’s mustache formed icicles. The Wild Card game, which aired on the streaming service Peacock, was the most streamed U.S. event ever, drawing 23 million viewers, according to Comcast NBCUniversal, Peacock’s owner. It also was the largest event ever for internet usage in the U.S., accounting for 30% of web traffic, making Saturday the single highest day of U.S. internet usage in history.

It’s Netflix’s world, rivals just stream in it

Cheaper streaming options with unique programming were luring viewers, leaving Netflix in a tough spot as it raised prices. Paramount+, started in 2021, is joining forces with sister Showtime to widen its offerings. Disney, Paramount and WBD also operate cable and broadcast networks, and don’t specify what portion of the expense is allocated to streaming. Its subscribers, worth $136 a year in revenue apiece, are also more valuable than those of its rivals. Warner Bros Discovery on May 23 rebranded its streaming service as Max, which will include HBO programming along with Discovery’s reality TV shows.

Finland is another favorite, with a demented entry, Kaarija’s “Cha Cha Cha,” which is basically electronic body music, set in a glittery thunderdome. For Weir, who presents Peacock’s Eurovision coverage, this all shows the daring tastes of Eurovision viewers. It’s often countries most Americans would struggle find on a map that deliver Eurovision’s most memorable performances, even if they don’t necessarily make it out of the semifinal. “The response I got last year was just how impressed people were that there was an act for Moldova that had them standing on their couches and dancing,” Weir said. Competition for the most awkward Eurovision lyrics is close, as always, but let’s give Israel’s Noa Kirel a nod of approval for coming up with a tongue-twisting rallying cry in her song “Unicorn”: “It’s gonna be phenomen-phenomen-phenomenal/Phenomen-phenomenal/Feminine-feminine-femininal.”Classic Eurovision poetry.
Digital publishers and streamers including Roku presented new content, formats and technology at NewFronts. Photo: RokuArtificial intelligence, entertainment-industry turmoil and new ways of gauging the success of advertising loomed large at this week’s NewFronts media showcases for digital ad buyers. Presenters including Amazon, Roku and NBCUniversal’s Peacock hosted NewFronts events in New York City to show off new shows, ad formats and measurement capabilities. But this year’s NewFronts also offered a taste of what traditional TV programmers might face in two weeks at their annual upfront sales events, where major networks usually host star-laden stage shows for advertisers if the Writers Guild of America strike continues. WGA members on Tuesday picketed Peacock’s presentation in Midtown Manhattan, and actress Edie Falco chose to not introduce a new Peacock show during the event because of the strike, according to a person familiar with the situation.
