JetBlue has agreed to pay a $2 million penalty after federal regulators charged the U.S. carrier with operating multiple chronically delayed flight routes. Half the penalty will go toward compensating JetBlue customers affected by the airline’s chronic delays or any future disruptions caused by JetBlue within the next year — with a minimum of $75 for each harmed passenger. “Illegal chronic flight delays make flying unreliable for travelers. JetBlue had the seventh-worst on-time rate among North American carriers last year, trailing only Frontier Airlines, Air Canada and the Canadian carrier WestJet, according to the International Air Transport Association. The transportation department's investigation found JetBlue operated four chronically delayed routes, with the airline responsible for around 80% of the disruptions.

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean authorities moved Friday to carry out an unprecedented arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol over his botched attempt to declare martial law in a dramatic standoff at the presidential residence where Yoon has been staying since he was impeached last month. Two hours into the standoff, officials said the police special force escorting investigators had reached the presidential security detail closest to the building that contains Yoon. They said about an hour later that the arrest warrant had been served to the presidential security chief, Park Jong-joon. The Presidential Security Service told NBC News that it was required by law to protect the president, including from anyone entering the premises to execute warrants. The main opposition Democratic Party warned that Park and other members of the presidential security detail could face “severe legal judgment” if they hindered Yoon’s arrest.

An X post about a Southwest passenger's kitten was viewed more than 20 million times. Some replied with messages of support but others were less sympathetic about flying with pets. An airline passenger's tale about a kitten that pooped in its carrier sparked a debate about bringing pets on flights. She said she was on a Southwest Airlines flight when her seven-month-old cat, Oni, got scared during a rough landing and had "an accident." An estimated two million pets are taken on commercial flights annually in the US, according to a 2023 research paper published in the academic journal Animals.

The US Department of Transportation has hit JetBlue with a $2 million fine for delayed flights. Half of the $2 million fine will be to compensate JetBlue customers. JetBlue Airways was fined $2 million by the Department of Transportation, the agency said Friday, for operating chronically delayed flights. Just 74.5% of JetBlue flights managed to stay on schedule last year, according to the latest data from Cirium. The US is experiencing a shortage of air traffic controllers, which has limited its ability to handle high traffic flows.

Dear Tripped Up,Last March, my daughter and I were headed from Berlin, where she was studying, to Italy for her spring break. So I got in line for customer service chat — I was number 200 — but the app eventually quit on me. I then called Ryanair, but the agent told me that to reschedule the flight by phone would cost 180 euros. And the reimbursement form Ryanair has online required I submit my bank account information with an IBAN code — which American banks don’t have. I believe Ryanair owes me about 100 euros for the hotel, taxi and meal, plus a flight for two from Berlin to Rome.

BEIJING — Hybrid-powered vehicles are proving more popular than battery-only ones in China, even as consumers shift away from gas-only cars, full-year data show. BYD , by far the market leader, said in a filing Wednesday it sold around 4.3 million passenger cars in 2024. Nearly 2.5 million of those vehicles were hybrid-powered, a reversal from 2023 when BYD sold slightly fewer hybrid cars than battery-only vehicles. Tesla , which sells battery-only cars, is on track to sell more than 600,000 vehicles in China for a second-straight year, according to CNBC calculations of data from the China Passenger Car Association. He forecasts that by 2031, there will still be demand for internal combustion engine-based vehicles, including from hybrid-powered cars.

The trend is believed to have contributed to America’s box office declining by 3% last year, compared to 2023, to $8.72 billion, according to calculations by Deadline. The takings were 38 million yuan ($5.2 million), less than a quarter of last year’s and the lowest since Maoyan began keeping records in 2011. Seoul, South Korea CNN —The damaged flight data recorder from the Jeju Air passenger jet that crash-landed in South Korea will be sent to the United States for analysis, Seoul’s transport ministry said Wednesday, as bereaved families began visiting the crash site. Authorities said the black box was damaged in the crash, and concluded that South Korea is not capable of extracting the data, Seoul’s deputy minister of civil aviation Joo Jong-wan told reporters Wednesday. Earlier, Joo said the flight data recorder was missing a connector. Once the device has been sent overseas, the US National Transportation Safety Board will lead the analysis and be joined by South Korean investigators. The process, which is taking place in South Korea, will take about two days.

An Alaska Airlines flight on Christmas Eve from Anchorage to Fairbanks was forced to turn around after an eagle hit the plane. Alaska Airlines Flight 2041 had taken off from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport at 11:40 a.m. Dec. 24, but turned around and returned about 30 minutes later, according to FlightAware data. When the plane landed back in Anchorage, she said passengers learned that a bird strike involving an eagle was behind the sudden return. “The eagle survived at that time,” Tatela told the station. An Alaska Airlines spokesperson told the station that no emergency was declared and that the captain and first officer are trained for situations like a bird strike.

MUAN, South Korea — Outside South Korea’s Muan International Airport the smell of jet fuel is still in the air, days after a passenger jet belly-landed and skidded off the end of the runway, erupting into a fireball. So we waited and waited because they did not tell us how long we had to wait, where to wait and what to do,” he said. Sunday's Jeju Air crash has again raised concerns about flight safety. Boeing's 737-800 model is used by nearly 200 airlines and has a strong safety record. South Korea has transformed its air travel industry from a 'pariah' to one of the world's safest. Before 2000, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines were the two main airlines operating in South Korea. London CNN —Anxious airline flyers may well remember 2024 as the year their worst fears about the safety of air travel felt confirmed, as a series of unprecedented, and in some cases fatal, airplane incidents captured headlines. Three separate incidents last week — aboard South Korean, Canadian and Azerbaijani airliners — have stirred those anxieties during the busy holiday travel period. But statistics show the risk of death or injury on a commercial flight is extremely low. In footage broadcast by multiple South Korean news outlets, the Jeju Air flight can be seen skidding on its belly at high speed, hitting an embankment and erupting in a fireball. South Korean authorities are probing the cause of the disaster with the help of investigators from the United States.
