A Colorado man on a river trip to the Grand Canyon was found dead over the weekend, officials said Monday, in what appears to be the seventh death at the park since July 31. Patrick Horton, 59, was on day 10 of a noncommercial trip along the Colorado River when others in his party found his body Saturday morning near the river, the park said in a news release. The Grand Canyon recorded an average of 17 deaths per year from 2014 to 2023, a park spokeswoman has said. Since 2019, 2 million to 5 million people have visited the Grand Canyon each year, park data shows. Park data that looked at mortality reports from 2014 to 2019 shows that "photographing" was the most lethal recreational activity at the Grand Canyon.

A college student visiting the Grand Canyon died after an accidental fall near a scenic overlook, park officials said Thursday. The park service said it is investigating the incident with the local medical examiner’s office and no additional details were immediately available. According to National Park Service data, there were 205 fatal falls across the entire park system between 2014 and 2019, the most recent year available. At Grand Canyon National Park, which has recorded millions of visitors annually for decades, there were 14 deaths in the same period. An NBC News analysis last year found that Washington state's North Cascades National Park had the highest fatality rate in the country.

Not that long ago, Republican presidents were carrying out the Clean Air and Water Acts, creating the Environmental Protection Agency, expanding the National Park System and even initiating the country’s most authoritative report on climate change, the National Climate Assessment. Many of today’s Republican leaders stoke fear and anger by mocking the most divisive climate activists while claiming that every environmental solution is a radical one. If they’re not doing that, Republicans can often be found on the sidelines and disengaged from the issue completely. Instead of continuing the environmental legacy they were once known for, they have ceded the fight against climate change to Democrats, putting themselves on the wrong side of history. In other words, Donald Trump’s denial of climate change probably cost him the White House.

These latest changes are part of a last-minute effort by Republican leadership to get their members on board with a debt ceiling vote. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy insisted on Wednesday morning that the House will vote on the debt ceiling limit on Wednesday, despite several GOP House members publicly voicing their opposition to the legislation. In exchange, it would increase the debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion, or through March 31, 2024, whichever comes first. Whenever Republicans manage to pass their debt ceiling legislation, it'll be just a first step in negotiations with the White House, which is demanding to raise the limit without conditions.
