PARIS — There are few sights more iconic than the Eiffel Tower and the Olympic rings. The multicolored logo adorned the Eiffel Tower during the Paris 2024 Games, just as they had hung from London’s Tower Bridge in 2012 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2000. However, Hidalgo announced in the French media Aug. 31 that the rings would stay on the Eiffel Tower, until at least 2028 and perhaps beyond. After days of mounting criticism, the Eiffel family weighed in. Nevertheless, the Eiffel family say they won’t climb down without a fight.

The statement did not specify Michel’s illness, which was reported days after she swam in the River Seine during the women’s triathlon on Wednesday. “Claire Michel, a member of the relay, is unfortunately ill and must withdraw from the competition.”Michel finished 38th in the women’s triathlon competition on Wednesday. Swiss Olympic Chief Medical Officer Hanspeter Betschart noted that it is unclear if Briffod’s infection is related to the Seine’s water quality. The athletes had largely put their trust in organizers to ensure that the water quality was safe for them.

Fluidion’s testing has found that, on average, E. Coli levels in the Siene between early April and late May were just under 3400 MPN/100mL. The highest E. Coli levels recorded by Fluidion were 23590 MPN/100mL on May 2 and 13090 MPN/100mL on May 30, according to Angelescu. But if poor water quality persisted, the triathlon would have to be downgraded to a duathlon with no swimming, the organization confirmed. Angelescu said that “significant infrastructure projects” by the city of Paris designed to improve water quality will have a “substantial” impact. At a referendum in Paris last month, almost 55% voted in favor of a specific parking rate for sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for non-residents. The higher charges will apply to SUVs weighing more than 1.6 metric tons that are hybrid or have a combustion engine, as well as electric SUVs weighing over 2 metric tons.
