France's challenges are far from over, however, with the country facing acute fiscal challenges and an ongoing threat posed by the far-right National Rally opposition, led by Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen. France this week asked the Commission to extend its deadline of Sept. 20 to submit debt reduction proposals. Analysts say Barnier's political survival therefore "depends on the whims and personal-political calculations of Le Pen." "The great unknown ... is how far Le Pen will be willing to address the most immediate crisis facing Barnier and the country: the painful choices needed to prevent France from plunging into a destructive fiscal crisis by the end of this year," he said. Francois Lo Presti | Afp | Getty ImagesFrench voters are heading to the polls on Sunday for the second and final round of voting in a snap parliamentary election. By offering voters a starker choice and fewer candidates, RN's opponents hope that the electorate will opt for the non-RN candidate. "For instance, former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has said voters should vote neither for the RN nor candidates from the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) party. At the same time, current Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has called for everyone to vote against the RN." If the choice was between a far-left and far-right candidate, however, the picture was more nuanced, showing a split vote.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has said French voters now have a "moral duty" to halt the party's advance. The officer — a father of three who's in his 40s, and a right-leaning voter — said the polarization in French society was "very worrying, but unfortunately normal with the 'diversity' of our society." The police officer said he expected civil unrest after the vote, whichever party gained the most votes. "There will be civil unrest whoever is elected, this is France and the people speak their mind." Civil unrest possiblePolitical experts agree that the current febrile atmosphere of French politics, and antagonism between the main bodies of voters, are the ingredients for further civil unrest.

Vandalized posters with images of local candidates for the European Parliament election mixed with those from the first round of the 2024 French legislative elections, seen on June 24 2024, in Val d Arry, Calvados. France will hold an early legislative election in two rounds on June 30 and July 7 2024, following President Emmanuel Macrons decision which was triggered by his party's heavy defeat to the far-right National Rally in the 2024 European Parliament election. Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesFrench voters are heading to the polls on Sunday for the first round of voting in a snap parliamentary election that could see the far-right National Rally group become the biggest party in France's National Assembly, polls suggest. Calling the snap election, which will involve two rounds of polling on Sunday and on July 7, Macron said the vote would provide "clarification" and that "France needs a clear majority to act in serenity and harmony." Nurphoto | Getty ImagesWith just days to go until France's snap parliamentary election kicks off, victory for the far right looks increasingly likely in the first phase of the two-stage runoff. But predicting the outcome of France's final vote on July 7 is less clear-cut, given the complexity of France's voting system. Voter turnout for the national election is also expected to be larger — and therefore more representative — than the 51% who cast their ballot in the EU vote. With that in mind, analysts see a 30% to 40% chance of the National Rally winning the 289 seats needed to secure an absolute majority in the 577-seat National Assembly. A majority government for either the far-right or the ultraleft alliance, meanwhile, could spark a far more dramatic outcome.

Soon, he could well become prime minister if RN wins an absolute majority in the forthcoming parliamentary elections — and he's only 28. Bardella's rise from party spokesman in 2017 to party president over the course of five years is somewhat remarkable for a man who is only 28. Bardella excelled in economics and social sciences at a private college and joined National Rally — then known as the National Front — at the age of 16. Two years later, he became a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) before being made party president in 2022. However, ahead of Paris 2024, Nakamura finds herself at the center of France’s culture wars. CNN —Astronomers have uncovered additional evidence that one of Saturn’s smallest moons, Mimas, is hiding a global ocean beneath its icy surface. Discovered in 1789 by English astronomer William Herschel as a tiny dot near Saturn, Mimas was first imaged from space by the Voyager probes in 1980. Craters cover the surface of Mimas, but the largest one is 80 miles (about 130 kilometers) across and causes the moon to resemble the Death Star from the “Star Wars” films. But Saturn’s Enceladus appears younger because active geysers have contributed to resurfacing, or depositing of new, fresh material on that moon’s surface. “Mimas certainly demonstrates that moons with old surfaces can be hiding young oceans, which is pretty exciting,” Rhoden said.

Sept 26 (Reuters) - The 2024 Diamond League will begin its 15-stop season with two meets in China, in Xiamen and Shanghai, in April while Brussels will stage the two-day season finale in September, organisers said on Monday. Last year's Diamond League was also scheduled to have 15 meets but the Shanghai stop was cancelled after COVID-19 restrictions caused delays in the renovation of the venue. Xiamen will host the opening event on April 20, a week before Shanghai returns to the calendar for the first time since 2019. Paris, Monaco and London will host meetings in July before the Paris Games begin later that month. Brussels will host the final for the first time since 2019 and 11th time overall when it stages the meet from Sept. 13-14.

I moved from New York back to Paris in the summer of 2020, partly to get away from the spate of anti-Asian assaults that had emerged after the Covid pandemic. “But isn’t there just as much racism in France?” ask my U.S.-based friends, who need to believe they are living in the world’s most enlightened nation. The pandemic also saw a rise in anti-Asian incidents in France, as in many countries. So, no, France is not free of racism. Meanwhile, my life in France, as a somewhat assimilated fluent French speaker, is the closest I’ve ever come to the luxury of feeling like a privileged member of the dominant majority.

"It's going to be spectacular and will showcase all our territories," Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet said at a ceremony at the French capital's Sorbonne university. Following a brief domestic relay in Greece the flame is then handed over to the host city. Paris organisers have said they will use a three-masted ship the 'Belem' to take it the port city of Marseille, where the sailing competitions of the Olympics will take place. Usually the flame, held in a safety lantern, is flown by plane to the Olympic Games host city. Paris 2024 organisers have been planning to install the Olympic flame on the Eiffel Tower, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters last month.

The "Diana and Endymion" painting by Jerome-Martin Langlois, which depicts Roman goddess Diana looking lovingly at the handsome Endymion, was once on display in an Amiens museum but was lost after Germany bombed the city in 1918. Amiens, where French President Emmanuel Macron was born, is a candidate to be European Capital of Culture in 2028. "We do not dispute in any way the legal acquisition that you have made but we are candidates to be European Capital of Culture in 2028. So I would like that on this occasion, this year, you could lend us your painting," Amiens mayor Brigitte Foure said in a video posted on Facebook. Foure said the painting was probably lent to the Amiens museum by the Louvre before World War One, after which Amiens lost trace of it.
At the heart of Harry and Meghan's narrative is that Britain's sensationalist popular press is a "devil" that members of the royal family have colluded with to protect or enhance their own reputations. The royal family have been here before, though. "That said, you could argue it only reinforces the victim narrative from Harry and Meghan in America," the former aide said. "The one thing the royal family has on its side is time. So it can play the long game - which Harry and Meghan maybe can't, in that they have to be telling their story now."
And one British scientist led the push Friday to incorporate bold new, tongue-twisting prefixes on the gigantic and even the minuscule scale. There’s the gargantuan “ronna” (that’s 27 zeros after the one) and its big brother the “quetta” — (that’s 30 zeros). Their ant-sized counterparts are the “ronto” (27 zeros after the decimal point), and the “quecto” (with 30 zeros after the decimal point) -- representing the smaller numbers needed for quantum science and particle physics. The conference, which takes place every four years in France, is the supreme authority of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. (We) need new words as things expand,” Brown said.
