Small business owners and workers in Puerto Rico say they're struggling to recover from a massive power outage earlier this week that left the entire island without electricity. Though some businesses and residences had their power restored by Tuesday afternoon or evening, others had to wait longer. ADThe island's power system has been an issue for a long timePuerto Rico has for years dealt with a sometimes rickety power system, highlighted in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Hurricane Fiona in 2022 .

In recent years, Puerto Rico has seen a rise in entrepreneurs moving there. Then I planned a whole trip to Puerto Rico with my cofounder and our wives, and we fell in love with it. The stoplights were out and most buildings were unlit in San Juan on Tuesday as a massive power outage swept Puerto Rico.

☆ US overdoses have fallen sharply in recent months, a hopeful shift in trends

But the latest provisional data shows that overdose deaths made a sharp turn at the end of last year and have been trending down for months. There were about 101,000 overdose deaths in the year ending in April, CDC estimates. Overdose deaths involving fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are down 20% year-over-year, CDC data shows. These drugs are now involved in about two-thirds of all fatal overdoses, down from more than three-quarters of all overdose deaths a year ago. “We’ve been riding a better than 20-year peak in terms of the continuous increases of drug overdoses,” Pamplin said.
