Normally at this time of year, the grassy southeastern corner of Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, N.Y., is a place for softball games, family picnics and a few cricket players enjoying a warm weekend afternoon. On Sunday, that space was transformed into a stage for one of the most-watched global sporting events of the year. More than 34,000 fans and cricket dignitaries squeezed into a temporary stadium built in the last three months in the Long Island park to watch the most anticipated match of the T20 Cricket World Cup: India versus Pakistan. For about three hours, fans in blue and orange India shirts mingled with their (vastly outnumbered) rivals in the dark green of Pakistan, producing a festive and vibrant atmosphere.

CNN —Pakistan’s heartbreaking Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup continued as it succumbed to a dramatic six-run defeat against archrival India on Sunday following its shock loss to the USA earlier in the week. Often described as one of the greatest sporting grudge matches in the world, an India-Pakistan cricket match is always bound up in the geopolitical faultlines that separate the two nations. India narrowly defeated Pakistan. But the game turned on its head with six overs left when Jasprit Bumrah bowled Rizwan and took the momentum away from Pakistan. It set up a grandstand finish with Pakistan needing 18 runs off six balls in the last over and it ultimately fell just short.

CNN —An Indian bowler previously attacked on social media for his Muslim faith has emerged as a hero of the national team as it prepares to take on Australia in the Cricket World Cup final on Sunday. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami took seven wickets in Wednesday’s semifinal against New Zealand – the biggest haul in the tournament’s history – cementing his status as a standout of this World Cup. In 2021, the player received a torrent of online hate after India lost to Pakistan during the Twenty20 World Cup. “Remember how Mohammed Shami was targeted two years ago after loss to Pakistan. Nov 15 (Reuters) - Babar Azam stepped down as Pakistan's cricket captain on Wednesday, days after a group stage exit from the World Cup. Azam captained Pakistan in all three formats starting October 2019, and led them to number one in ICC One Day International (ODI) rankings for the first time in May. Pakistan slid from the spot after finishing fourth in Asia Cup and fifth in the World Cup. Batsman Shan Masood has been announced by the PCB as the new test captain while pacer Shaheen Afridi will be the T20 captain. Azam is ranked by ICC as a top five batsman in all three formats, and is Pakistan's most successful captain in T20 Internationals with 42 wins.

Oct 31 (Reuters) - Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has stepped down as Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) chief selector on Sunday after allegations of a conflict of interest. "I am stepping down from the post to offer the PCB the opportunity to conduct a transparent inquiry," Inzamam said in a statement released by the board. "If the committee finds me not guilty, I will resume my role as the chief selector." The PCB said it had set up a five-member fact-finding committee to look into the allegations. The allegations surfaced in the middle of Pakistan's struggling World Cup campaign, where they sit seventh in the points table after four successive defeats.

The India vs Pakistan cricket World Cup game takes place at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Oct. 14, 2023 in Ahmedabad, India. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed the world's most populous nation will bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai on Saturday, Modi said hosting the event is "the age-old dream" for India. "India will leave no stone unturned in the preparation for the successful organisation of the Olympics in 2036 — this is the dream of the 140 crore (1.4 billion) Indians." Indonesia and Mexico have previously expressed official interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, and last month Poland's President Andrzej Duda told the IOC it wants to stage the Games.

CNN —Fans packed inside the enormous Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India to watch India take on Pakistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup on Saturday. And in front of a sea of blue India shirts, punctuated by flashes of green, orange and white as people waved India flags, the home team secured a thumping seven-wicket victory over Pakistan. Often described as one of the greatest sporting grudge matches in the world, an India-Pakistan cricket match is always bound up in the geopolitical faultlines that separate the two nations. The two teams had not played each other for seven years on Indian soil, and Pakistan had never defeated India at a men’s World Cup. Led by a rampaging Rohit Sharma, who starred with 86 off 63 balls, India responded with ease, reaching Pakistan’s total with 117 balls to spare.

Soured political relations between the Asian neighbours has further complicated the issue and the Pakistan Cricket Board has asked the governing International Cricket Council (ICC) to sort out visa delays for their fans and media travelling to India. "It didn't seem like an ICC event to be brutally honest," the former Australia coach said after Pakistan's seven-wicket loss. "I didn't hear 'Dil Dil Pakistan' coming through the microphones too often tonight," he said referring to the unofficial anthem for the country. Asked if it was right for a World Cup, Arthur said: "Look, I don't think I can comment on that just yet. Quite a few of the hospitals have seen a sudden influx of patients booked in for check-ups involving a night's stay to coincide with the most anticipated match of the World Cup. The Ahmedabad Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association has discouraged its members from accommodating such fans. India and Pakistan head into the showdown having both won their opening two matches at the tournament. The city has been declared a 'no-drone zone' on Saturday, and 11,000 security personnel will be deployed for the high-profile match, Ahmedabad police commissioner GS Malik said. But on Saturday, for the first time in seven years, these two rivals will play each other on Indian soil in the opening stages of Cricket World Cup, which India is hosting. As Pakistan’s cricket team arrived in India’s southern city of Hyderabad last month, they were met with rapturous applause from Indians waiting at the airport for the star players. Even the Pakistan cricket team were only able to obtain visas at the eleventh hour, after complaints of a delay in the process which the Pakistan Cricket Board said disrupted the team’s preparation for the event. Chaudhry Abdul Jalil, popularly known as Chacha Cricket, waves after crossing the India-Pakistan border in Wagah on March 29, 2011, on the eve of the India-Pakistan Cricket World Cup semi-final match. “The World Cup is the one with the history and the legacy, it’s the one you want to win,” Shah said.

NEW DELHI, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Visas have been issued for the Pakistan team for their participation in the 50-overs World Cup in India, the governing International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Monday, following complaints of a delay in the process. "Visas have been issued to the Pakistan team," an ICC spokesperson told Reuters without elaborating further. "There has been an extraordinary delay in getting clearance and securing Indian visas for the Pakistan team for ICC World Cup," Farooq said in the statement. "It's a matter of disappointment that Pakistan team has to go through the uncertainty ahead of the major tournament." Pakistan call for back-ups after injuries to Rauf and Naseem
  + stars: | 2023-09-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
COLOMBO, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Pakistan are set to draft in back-ups for Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah with the pace duo looking doubtful for the remainder of the Asia Cup having sustained injuries during their Super Four stage defeat to India. Shahnawaz Dahani and Zaman Khan will come into the squad in Sri Lanka but no decision had been made yet regarding Rauf and Naseem, the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement. Pakistan suffered a heavy defeat against their arch-rivals in a rain-hit Super Four contest played over two days. Rauf bowled five overs on Sunday before experiencing discomfort in his right side and sat out the reserve day's action. Rauf and Naseem did not bat and are likely to miss Thursday's Super Four match against Sri Lanka, with their participation in the Sept. 17 final also in doubt should Pakistan make it.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Cricket, breakdancing and flag football are still waiting to find out if they will be added to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The process to add sports that organizers in Los Angeles want at the 2028 Games was unexpectedly delayed Wednesday by the International Olympic Committee. India has long seemed the ideal setting to bring cricket — in its shortened T20 format — back to the Olympics for the first time since its only appearance at the 1900 Paris Games. Breaking, the official name of breakdancing, is likely to be retained in 2028 ahead of its widely anticipated debut in Paris next year. The IOC gave no new timetable Wednesday for decisions, saying that “the sports program for the Olympic Games LA28 will be discussed during a later IOC (board) meeting, to take place at a date to be decided.”___

REUTERS/Zahid Hussein/File PhotoLAHORE, Pakistan, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq hopes his second stint as chief selector of the men's team will prove more successful than his first when the team won the 2017 Champions Trophy in England. With the Asia Cup and the 50-overs World Cup looming this year, the 53-year-old would play a crucial role as Pakistan eye continental and global titles this year. "But, I know I can deliver in this role and I will try to do better than I did the last time. "I am delighted that Inzamam-ul-Haq has agreed to head our national men’s selection committee at a crucial juncture.
