CNN —The dappled starlight and swirling clouds of Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” are thought to reflect the artist’s tumultuous state of mind when he painted the work in 1889. Now, a new analysis by physicists based in China and France suggests the artist had a deep, intuitive understanding of the mathematical structure of turbulent flow. Batchelor’s scaling mathematically represents how small particles, such as drifting algae in the ocean or pieces of dust in the wind, are passively mixed around by turbulent flow. “I think this physical relationship must be embedded in his mind so that’s why when he made this famous ‘Starry Night’ painting, it mimics the real flow,” Huang said. “What I take away from studies like this is that (van Gogh) captured some of this universality in the beautiful (‘Starry Night’),” Beattie added.

LONDON — Two alleged art thieves will appear in court in London next month accused of stealing “Girl With Balloon,” a famous painting by the mysterious British street artist Banksy. Larry Fraser, 47, from east London, and James Love, 53, from Essex, were both charged with non-residential burglary and placed in police custody on Thursday. The artwork — which shows a little girl letting go of, or perhaps reaching out for, a heart-shaped balloon — was stolen from a gallery in central London on Sept. 8 at 11:00 p.m, police said. The painting was the only item stolen and police said it had been recovered and would be returned to the gallery. The latest artworks from Banksy were a series of animal paintings dotted around London last month.

AdvertisementMissy Scalise has begun using AI to cut down on the amount of work she has to do after hours. In 2023, the World Economic Forum reported that employers expected 44% of workers' skills to be "disrupted" within five years. Another challenge with inserting AI into an organization is that it's often difficult to tell which skills workers possess and where they might need training. Charlotte Relyea, a senior partner at McKinsey & Co., believes that leaders need to plan now so they can better forecast the abilities workers will need. Leaders need to think about this as a transformation — what she described as "painting the picture of the future."
