BI: Why do you think your book — and conversations about how to be a better traveler — are important right now? And actually surveys are showing that people are more concerned about sustainability, they're more concerned about their impacts on communities. Related storiesIn 2018, I moved with my family to a little village in the French Alps. I had a chance to see firsthand how tourism really brought life into this village that would otherwise have become a ghost town, probably 50 years ago. It was really so moving to this village that that inspired me to start looking at travel and tourism in my journalism.

Ahead of the summer travel season, leaders in many tourist spots have adopted measures to tame the tourist crowds — or at least earn more revenue from them. The goal is to ensure that tourism functions smoothly for visitors and locals alike, said Megan Epler Wood, managing director of the Sustainable Tourism Asset Management Program at Cornell University. “All tourism is dependent on beautiful natural and cultural resources. You have to protect those resources in order to be a viable tourism destination — and if you don’t, they degrade,” Ms. Epler Wood said. In some places, proposals for new fees or visitor rules have drawn opposition from residents, who fear they might scare away the tourists who bolster the local economy.

Climate Change and ‘Last-chance Tourism’

A lot of climate discussion revolves around time. Lines rise across charts predicting the next century. As the Earth warms, natural wonders — coral reefs, glaciers, archipelagos — are at risk of damage and disappearance. This has motivated some travelers to engage in “last-chance tourism,” visiting places threatened by climate change before it’s too late. (Early tourists included Mary Shelley and Mark Twain.)

Will My Next Trip Be by Train Instead of Plane?

Train lovers and travelers concerned about their carbon footprint have a lot to choose from this year — especially in Europe. While some European governments are mulling short-haul flight bans, many passengers are already opting for rail, where new connections are numerous. Nightjet, part of the Austrian federal railway, ÖBB, started running a sleeper train between Berlin and Paris in December, while the French rail operator, S.N.C.F., started overnight service between Paris and Aurillac, in south-central France, the same month. And the Italian rail operator Trenitalia has recently started running a weekly high-speed connection between Rome and the station serving the Pompeii archaeological park. Other new European connections include a sleeper service between Brussels and Prague, coming in late March, and an overnight train between Brussels and Bratislava, Slovakia, expected late this year or early next.

“It’s part of this zeitgeist that we need to be more conscious and take better care of our local environment,” Mr. Hansen said. In line with that trend, some European destinations that have long imposed tourism taxes have begun to increase their rates or impose additional levies. Last year, the Barcelona City Council began imposing a “city surcharge” on visitors, over and above the accommodation tax (from €1 to €3.50 per night), which the government of Catalonia established in 2012. It’s a similar story in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik — which, according to one index, had the highest ratio of tourists to residents of any European city in 2019. The mayor described the cruise tax as “a win-win.”

Are there many other women tour guides in Saudi Arabia? A lot of potential female visitors might have questions about how to dress in Saudi Arabia. The only exceptions are if I’m going somewhere official — the courthouse or a police station — or if I’m going to a mosque. But look at you, without an abaya: You’re a woman, and you made your choice. Some Saudis will recommend that women visitors wear a scarf.

Right after the volcanic eruption in 2010, there was the launch of the “Inspired by Iceland” campaign to promote tourism. There have been some genius campaigns, and a lot of them have important underlying messages about sustainability, like the Icelandic pledge, a commitment to responsible travel that anyone can take online. And the Icelandic pledge is a good way of reminding people to be kind to nature and make sure you have a travel plan in case something happens. And definitely here in Iceland, you go to a swimming pool, because that’s where you can meet people — morning, afternoon or evening. And we were just laughing that only in Iceland do we run into each other in an undergarment store.
